Our Ronald McDonald House has experienced somerecent changes with the retirement of Glenda Love and the hiring of Jean Ann Hankins. Jean Ann truly “hit theground running” when she arrived in October. We are fortunate that Glenda was willing and able to serve as a mentor to Jean Ann during this transition. So, as wesay, “Welcome!” to Jean Ann, we also give a big“THANKS!” to Glenda for her job well done!
Last February, our board participated in a productiveboard planning session. Aaron Fulkerson did a superbjob of evoking thoughts, leading discussion, and summarizing. We reflect-ed on our successes, examined our challenges and considered some guide-lines and plans for ensuring our future success. We believe that this sessionwas significant in setting the stage for the change in our House executivedirector leadership and for us as a board as we strive to be great stewardsof our resources.
As our board goes about the work of budgeting, amending and adopting bylaws, hiring and evaluating staff, and in general doing the policy work of the House, we must always keep our mission: “providing ahome-away-from-home for families whose children are being treated inTulsa hospitals for serious medical illness or injury” foremost in our deci-sion making.During our new board members’ orientation, I mentionedthat when I was a school principal and superintendent, I maintained acommitment to make decisions based upon the students in our district. As the current board chair, I have much the same commitment to decisionmaking: Decisions should be based upon the families that we serve. Ourboard and staff are steadfast in ensuring that our House provides a welcoming, safe, and consistent environment – a “safe-haven” for the families in their time of need. We are proud of our House and the purposethat it serves in Tulsa and our state!

MIRACLE BABY BEATS ALL ODDS WITH HEART TRANSPLANT
A Family’s Journey o A
s the McDaniel family busilyprepared for the arrival of theirtwins, they had no idea that
their lives would be turned upsidedown once their adorable baby girlswere born. Born on July 20, 2012 atthe Tahlequah City Hospital, Leaharrived first, weighing 5.6 pounds, with Abigail delivered shortly there-after, weighing 5.1pounds. New parents,Amanda and JimmieMcDaniel, along withtheir 10-year-old daugh-ter Katie, were ecstaticthat the blessed day hadarrived, but nothingcould have prepared thefamily for the long roadthat lay ahead when theylearned that baby Leahhad severe medical issues.
Baby Abigail was infine health, but doctorsdetermined that Leahrequired specialized med-ical treatment immedi-ately. On the evening ofher birth, Leah wasflown by Life Flight toThe Children’s Hospitalat Saint Francis in Tulsa.Jimmie McDaniel was able to accom-pany his newborn daughter on theflight, and although Amanda had justundergone a C-section, she anddaughter Katie, along with newbornAbigail, were able to arrive in Tulsathree days later in order for the familyto be together throughout this fright-ening time. Their journey had justbegun.
The team of specialists diagnosedLeah with hypoplastic left heart syn-drome, a rare type of congenital heartdisease where parts of the left side ofthe heart are not fully developed. Ifleft undetected or untreated, the con-dition is fatal.
For the next 2½ months, The TulsaRonald McDonald House becamehome to Jimmie, Amanda, Katie andbaby Abigail as Leah’s life hung in thebalance. Leah underwent eight surger-ies during their stay at the TulsaHouse before it was determined thather only chance of survival would be aheart transplant. She had actually died
twice – once when she went into car-diac arrest following a procedure andonce on the operating table – but thedoctors never gave up on her and wereable to bring her back each time.
Each setback was heart wrenching, but the McDaniels’ unwavering faithbrought them through each ordeal.“We just kept praying, our pastor andchurch family at First ApostolicChurch in Welling, Oklahoma, keptpraying, the doctors prayed beforeeach surgery and we believe it was theLord that touched them to performthe surgeries,” Amanda continued.
The McDaniels kept constant vigilover their daughter, arriving at 6:00
each morning and leaving around 7:00each evening for a quick dinner beforereturning to the House for some muchneeded rest and comfort. The wholefamily remained a united front in thehospital room with big sister Katieworking on her home-school assign-ments and entertaining herself with artand crafts projects, while twin Abigail
would eat and sleep nextto her sister so their bondwould not be disrupted.“We could not have madeit if Abigail wasn’t such agood baby,” statedAmanda. “She has been areal trooper – the perfectbaby – and Katie is thebest big sister.” Amandacontinued.
Their journey thentook them to St. Louison September 29, 2012to anxiously await herheart transplant. Toldthat it could take 6–10weeks or more beforefinding a suitable heartfor Leah, the McDaniels’prayers were answeredwhen a short 14 dayslater, Leah had a heart
match. “It was a miracle. We felt likewe had just won the lottery,” statedMr. McDaniel.
The St. Louis Park Avenue RonaldMcDonald House became their home-away-from-home for their six-weekstay during the successful heart trans-plant and recuperation period, beforereturning to the Tulsa RonaldMcDonald House for another 3-weekstay, while Leah continued her in-patient treatment at The Children’sHospital at Saint Francis. Then the bigday arrived – December 4, 2012 –when Leah was strong enough to gohome for the very first time. It wouldbe a great homecoming for the entire

y of the HeartMcDaniel family as the began to seethe light at the end of the tunnel.
The McDaniels family made such animpression on everyone they met thatthe Tulsa community, as well as theirhometown community of Tahlequah, opened their hearts and their check-books to help ease the tremendousfinancial strain placed upon this familyfacing such hardships. The nurses atThe Children’s Hospital at SaintFrancis collected $1,100 in donations,as well as providing numerous giftcards for their use before leaving forSt. Louis; their home church – FirstApostolic Church – held a community-wide fundraiser in Tahlequah, raisingover $14,000 with nearly 100% partici-pation by every business in the area;and before they returned from St.Louis, a Leah McDaniel Fund wasestablished, raising over $4,600 in onenight after being publicized in theNortheastern State University news-paper. Their final surprise was whenKTUL-TV Channel 8’s ChiefMeteorologist Jennifer Zeppelinarrived at the Tulsa House on Leah’srelease date, presenting the family with$500 from an anonymous viewer whohad heard of their plight and personal-ly showed up at the studio with thisgift for their Random Acts of Kindnessprogram.
The McDaniels are a remarkablefamily and are so thankful to havestayed at Ronald McDonald Housesthroughout their journey. Theybecame everyone’s heroes during theirstays, exhibiting such grace, faith andperseverance during the most stressfultime in their lives, serving as an inspi-ration to everyone whose lives theytouched. They felt blessed with theoutpouring of love from family, friendsand the Ronald McDonald Housefamily, as well as the support from doctors, nurses, medical support staffand complete strangers. “No one
wants to go through this type of expe-rience, but it definitely builds backyour faith in people,” Amanda stated.‘It has been a challenging journey, butthere have been so many miraclesalong the way and we know the Lord
brought her through,” Amanda stated. Leah’s prognosis is for a bright,
healthy future and we wish theMcDaniels the very best as they returnto their lives with three beautifuldaughters.
Preparing to go home for the very first time in 4½ months, Leah’s release date was a very busyday indeed. Doctors and nurses continued to stop by to say goodbye to the entire McDaniel family –a family that had become a huge part of their lives and hearts. Pictured, from left, are Baby Leah,Father Jimmy, Big Sister Katie holding baby Abigail; Mother Amanda, Dr. Mary-Jane Barth,Pediatric Surgeon; and Dr. Mahmood Khichi, PICU Hospitalist.

The Tulsa Ronald McDonald House is now collecting pop tabs and old keys. This is a greatway to teach kids about philanthropy and theimportance of recycling, while raising funds to help children and their families at the same time.
WHY? We collect pop tabs instead of entire aluminum cans because it is more hygienic andcollection/storage is easier. The program is an easy way for people of all ages to support RMHCand know they are making a difference for families and children.
WHERE? Bring your collection to the Tulsa Ronald McDonald House. Call the House aboutgetting a collection container that you can be responsible for filling through one of your owngroups.
HOW MUCH? The Tulsa House takes the collection to local recycling centers, where they areweighed to determine value. The recycling center then sends our House a check for the totalvalue. It’s a win-win for everyone. Start pulling for the House today!
