    Other News:

The Akron Garden Forum ‘s Annual Tea took place

April 13th and Sue spoke of the many new activities

and community projects for this year.

The Garden Club purchased a tree for Twinsburg's Commemorative Tree Program. We

chose a Nyssa sylvatica, commonly known as the black tupelo tree or the black gum

tree. The reasons we chose this particular tree: it is a medium- sized deciduous, orna-

mental, pyramidal shaped tree with a broad, overlapping branch range often used as a

shade tree. The foliage turns purple in autumn and then to a intense, bright scarlet

red. The fruit is black-blue and is a valuable energy food source for migrating birds such as the American Robin, Blue Jay, Wood Thrush, Northern Cardinal, Eastern Blue-

    bird, and many more.

    Gardening Tips:

Easy way to cut down tall grass plant: Tie rope around base of a tall grass plant

about a two feet up from the ground and tie as tight as possible. Use a

chainsaw to cut straight across underneath the rope, leaving the plant about ten inches or so tall. Have a second person ready to catch clump and stuff in

    large yard bag.

Plant showy vegetables in the middle of your mixed flowering pots, such as a

jalapeno pepper. It adds height, interest and color. Add herbs and lettuce

    around the edges of pots.

Bring your Boston fern inside for the winter and it will survive inside the house

over the winter. It needs a cup of water every day and placed in a sunny

    window.

    Reminders:

The discount deadline to register for the GCO convention is March 15th. Most

of us will be interested in April 1st and 2nd.

We need about fifteen jars or small vases for fresh arrangements to sell at the

plant sale. They should be the size of a small mason jar (these are perfect) or

small mayonnaise jar. Approximately 3 ” opening and about 4” tall.

Bring seeds to the March meeting for Seeds of Friendship. Deadline for April’s a garden globe project registration and money is April 1st.

    Franklin Park Conservatory

The day after Valentine’s Day, my husband and I went to see the Bruce Munro: Light exhibit at the Franklin

Park Conservatory in Columbus. It was beautiful! I highly recommend going. There were light exhibits in

a gallery room, scattered throughout the conservatory and outside in the snow.

    Entering the conservatory you

    pass between two stunning

    white light sculptures.

In the gallery, there were color

    changing sculptures.

Among the plants were huge sculptures hanging

from the ceiling and stairs lit from below. One of

my favorite displays mimicked a summer thunder-

    storm, including sound.

Any visit to the conservatory is incom-

    plete without viewing the absolutely

splendid Chihuly glass works. (There is

one at the Columbus Art Museum too.)

The one on the left is huge and half of a

pair on either side of an exhibit of mas-

    sive tropical trees.

    Franklin Park Conservatory

Outside was a field of nearly 3000 lit circular bulbs

that looked like lollipops. The colors changed in

waves so that blue green lollipops might be to one

side of you and red orange in front of you. Paths

led through the field so you could see them from all

    perspectives.

    Other outdoor displays consisted

of large glass spheres of different

sizes, red glass swords of light

    pointing upwards and towers

    built of water bottles.

    Franklin Park Conservatory

Going on at the same time is a wonderful orchid show!

The orchid on the left is a beautiful bronze sculpture about 20 feet tall.

    My husband shows the scale.

    Franklin Park Conservatory

In keeping with the theme of light, many plants that are a

normal part of the conservatory were beautifully lit.

I recommend going to the conservatory mid to late afternoon so you can see the permanent exhibits in

daylight: Himalayan Mountain Biome, Rainforest Biome, Desert Biome and Pacific Island Water

Garden. The Bruce Munro: Light exhibit is from 5-11 PM Wednesdays-Saturdays through March 30th.

The Orchid show is through April 13. A Blooms and Butterflies exhibit (with hundreds of butterflies flying

freely in the Pacific Island Water Garden ) opened March 8th and goes on until September 28th. There is a

Gourd Society Show and Sale March 15th and 16th.
