United Way of Northern New York 2016 Annual Report

DEAR FRIENDS

In September 1921 a group of dedicated community leaders created an organization whose sole mission was to help others in times of need.

Ninety-five years later, the United Way of Northern New York ensures that vision remains a reality.

In 2015, the United Way proudly was involved in the following activities:

We brought the national 211 phone referral/information phone number to Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties. Like 911 for emergency calls, 211 is a referral number for callers seeking help with food, hous-ing, health care, etc. Users can also go to www.211cny.com to view services avail-able in the region.

We awarded grants totaling $445,000 to our nonprofit partners, an increase of 24 percent from the year before.

We held United Way-sponsored food drives in Jefferson and Lewis counties, and we partnered with Cargill Inc., in Gouverneur to provide a $3,700 grant to Lights on the River for food pantries in St. Lawrence County.

With the help of the Watertown Daily Times, we raised another $3,000 for food pan-tries in the three counties.

We announced the creation of the United Way-Boys and Girls Club Endowment, which will eventually produce funds for the clubs in Ogdensburg and Massena.

We held an estate planning and guardianship seminar for families with children who are disabled. The session was live-streamed from the Jefferson-Lewis BOCES to the St. Lawrence BOCES in Canton. More than 115 people attended the event.

We secured non-United Way grants totaling $12,000 to help programs for ACR Health and Prenatal/Perinatal Council of NNY.

We joined the state’s Bar Association in awarding a grant to Youth Court to help establish Youth Court Plus, which will provide peer-administered rehabilitative justice system to students 16-18 who have been charged with minor crimes.

We helped Habitat for Humanity build two houses in Carthage by securing teams of construction volunteers.

We provided staff assistance for the creation of the Starbuck Backpack Program and the Bubble Soccer Tournament that raised money for Prenatal/Perinatal.

Working with students at BOCES, we created our own campaign posters, featuring Jefferson Rehabilitation Center, The Arc in Lewis County and St. Lawrence Community Development Program.

We assisted state employees with their State Employees Federated Appeal, which raised $119,000 for area nonprofits.

We brought nationally recognized environmental speaker Bob Deans to Clarkson University to speak on how national politics is affecting the debate on climate change.

We recognized UPS regionally with the Macsherry Community Spirit Award for its year-round support of the United Way. In Jefferson County we honored Don Klug for his support of the United Way. In Lewis County we honored the Lewis County government for its financial support and support of 211. Eric Virkler was honored for his efforts to raise money for the Renee-Beyer-United Way En-dowment, which now exceeds $30,000 in donations.

And just for fun, we secured 700 free tickets to the Syracuse University-Boston College football game for our supporters here.

Our community noticed the work we have undertaken in the last year. This past March we received the Small Nonprofit of the Year award from the Greater Watertown North Country Chamber of Commerce.

This September we will celebrate our 95th anniversary in the north country and we’re planning a number of events. We hope this report will inspire you to join us in celebrating our successes and continuing to be a partner as we work on community challenges yet to come.

Cheers,

Bob Gorman

Our Partner Agencies The contributions to the United Way’s Campaign immeasurably impacts individuals, families, and our communities. The partners

of the United Way of Northern New York are listed below. We provide grants after reviewing agency programs to make sure there

is no duplication of services and that the programs are sustainable. Most of the programs we support revolve around prevention,

intervention, and crisis care. We fund programs for infants, teens, adults, and senior citizens. We often work with nonprofits

whose clients can – with all of our help – get back on their feet and avoid becoming a part of the welfare system.

A United Way Success Story

I grew up in Panama where I met a U.S. soldier. We were married and I came to the United States and Watertown in 1999 when I was

20. My husband was bilingual … that was good, because I could speak or read only a little English.

We moved to San Antonio, but when my marriage ended I decided to come back to

Watertown because this is a good place to raise children.

My English was still not very good and I needed a job. I started going for tutoring at

Literacy of Northern New York and finished three years ago. For the last year I have

been working at Lewis County General Hospital as a nursing assistant.

I enjoy my job, but I am most proud that last year I passed my citizenship test. It felt

so good and I was so happy because I have always wanted to be a United States

citizen. That is what Literacy of Northern New York did for me.

My children are in seventh and first grade and they know I have goals now. I want to

go to Jefferson Community College and get a degree in human services, and then

become a social worker. We plan to stay in this area. My son says he knows he wants

to be a solider one day.

By supporting the United Way of NNY, you help our 40 partner agencies in the region make a difference in the lives of people just like

Yira Rodrigues.

Once again, together, we accomplish more than any one person or agency can do alone. That’s what it means to #LIVEUNITED.

2016 State Employees Federated Appeal (SEFA)
