Why we use ClassDojo

Our classroom environment is

more positive and supportive

than ever.

We encourage each other in

class for skills we believe are

important, linking to the ethos

of Joy Lane.

JLPS Rewards

Old reward system:• House points

• Golden Pennies • Commendations

Why change?

Year 6 pupils had to collect house point totals from within each class, which is a tiresome task!

Teachers had to remind pupils to total house points at the end of the day / week

Children don't always record their house points as truthfully as possible!

Golden pennies have lost their worth value particularly in KS2

Encourage students

We aim to give ‘Dojo

points’ to students for

skills like helping

others, persistence,

and teamwork.

Students love being

recognised for their

hard work :)

Helping others

How Class Dojo links in with our current behaviour system?

Dojo’s will run alongside our current behaviour system here at Joy Lane.

Positive behaviour will be awarded with a class dojo point, a house point token, a class dojo ticket, commendations and pupil of the week

‘Red points’ for behaviour will be recorded by J Marshal as per usual – points will be accumulated from www.ClassDojo.com

Following the system that we already have… 1. Reminder2. Warning

3. Thinking time (10 mins)4. Red class dojo point

5. See Academic Team Leader6. See a Member of SLT

7. Parents Contacted by SLT8. Headteacher interview with Child and Parents

Feedback from the most important people… The Children!

Pupil Voice...

Connor says, " I think Dojos are better than house points because you can't be given loads in one go. You feel like you have achieved more with a dojo than we did with one house point."

Kirsty says, "It is much better earning a token than being given a house point to mark on a chart. I like that you get them for different reasons."

Holly says, "It is easier for us and the teacher because the teacher controls it on their laptop or iPad. We don't have to get up and mark the HPs on! Also they are fun because you have monster characters."

Class Dojo at Joy Lane

We will only be awarding/rewarding Dojos – we will NOT be taking away Dojos!

We can give Dojo’s for Positive and Negative Behaviour.

NB. EYFS Will not be using Negative Dojo’s due to the early years steps.

Dojo Rules at Joy Lane

Once a child has 10 Positive Dojos, we award them a house point token.

The children place the token in the house team tube in their year group shared area.

Each week, these small tubes will be emptied and counted. The tokens collected will be placed into larger tubes at the front of the hall.

The house point totals are announced in celebration assembly each Monday.

Once a child has a multiple of 25 Dojo points (25, 50, 75 etc.) they are awarded a Golden dojo ticket to place in the ‘raffle.’

Researchers from the Department of Educational Studies at St. Mary’s College conducted a three-week study on a Year 3 class to determine the effectiveness of Class Dojo. The study compared behaviours before and after implementation of the Class Dojo system.

Researchers determined that there was an overall increase in positive and self-regulatory student behaviours and a marked decrease in negative behaviours. Researchers noted an increase in student engagement and personal ownership of classroom conduct.

A doctoral candidate at St. Catherine University conducted a six-week study in a EYFS and Year 1 Class. The study showed a decrease in the number of office referrals and behaviour plans to correct student behaviours. Student surveys showed subjective support for Class Dojo; participants expressed perceived value in the Class Dojo system.

Your Children and Dojos

Many Parents have more than one child attending Joy Lane. Both children can be on the same parent account.

A Few things to bear in mind;

• The use of Dojo’s will vary from class to class – systems are in place to ensure continuity across the school.

• Children should not be compared to one another – every child is different!• Children may be unkind to one another at home / outside school – support and

encourage your children.

Children’s Class Dojo Accounts

Children sign up using parents email address linked to the parent account- and the student sign up code. The parent will then get an email which you have to verify within 7 days, no other information is needed.

Children will have to choose a username and password – this cannot be their name, but be warned, we can see the user name in class!

The children then have access to their Dojo Character; they can change the way he/she looks etc. This gives them ownership over their character and ultimately their own behaviour.

They can see their behaviour information for the current week only,it can also be broken down into days.
