PROPHETIC ANOINTING
The solemnity of today’s readings invites us into silent contemplation of the mystery of our redemption. There are so many levels on which to understand the events of the Passion. The woman who anoints Jesus acts prophetically in a way that the other disciples do not yet grasp. Anointing is for priests, prophets, and kings, and also for the preparation of the dead. It is for healing and for holiness. Her action acknowledges the imminent events of the passion and death of the Lord, and points toward his resurrection and triumph over evil and death. He is priest and victim, prophet and God, King and Lord. All these things are acknowledged in her prophetic anointing.

A DOUBLE SIDED SIGN : Early Palm Sunday morning Jesus made his public entry into Jerusalem. This was the end of his safe, private ministry and the beginning of an inevitable collision course with the religious and political authorities. Crowds gathered to see the rabbi from Galilee arriving on a donkey’s back. The procession began accompanied by shouting and singing to this “son of David” as they threw down their garments on the pathway to cushion his ride - an Oriental custom still observed on occasions - as well as palm fronds, the symbol of triumph. The priestly establishment was understandably disturbed. The prophet Zechariah
had foretold the Messiah’s arrival in Jerusalem on a humble donkey. And now people were hailing this donkey-riding teacher as something more than a man. Worse yet, Jesus was not denying this blasphemous adulation. What if this Jesus should claim to be the heir of King David? Palm Sunday thus became a two sided sign: A sign of hope to believers and a red flag of warning to those who conspired against Him. If they were to stop this Messiah, the religious leaders had to act quickly. And despite the prophecies, by Good Friday they had.
Hosanna! Welcome!
Ride on O Prince! Behold we lay
Our sins and proud will in your way
Hosanna! Welcome to our hearts
Here you have a Temple too
Enter Lord, Messiah, King
Hear our loud Hosannas ring!

TOTALLY CATHOLIC VACATION BIBLE
SCHOOL 2015
We are preparing for another amazing and life changing Chico area Catholic Vacation Bible School experience this summer here at Our Divine Savior. The theme for our June 15-19 VBS is "Everest—Conquering Challenges with God's Mighty Power.” Registration officially begins this weekend. You can find information online at ourdivinesavior.org/faith-
formation/vacation-bible-school.
We are also organizing a Decorations Team and need lots of help! No creative abilities are necessary. We need visionaries, busy people with very little time, creative people, and many who just want to help in some way but can't join us June 15-19 (or who can). Truly, we need a mighty team of many to share the work of turning
our social hall into a snow-capped majestic mountain. Our VBS will be full of icy colors, craggy tundra, and breath taking views that kids will be excited to explore. Please call the ODS Religious Education office at 345-6201 or come to our first build day in the social hall on Thursday, April 9th at 6PM.

GOOD FRIDAYGOOD FRIDAYGOOD FRIDAYGOOD FRIDAY
Help us we beg you, Father, to stand beneath the Cross of Jesus as we bring our petitions unto you. As we wait beneath the cross of Jesus, we confess our sins, our complicity in the madness and injustice of the world, our easy judgment of others, and our lame excuses of ourselves. Beneath the cross of Jesus we plead for forgiveness. Not only so; under its healing shadow we ask for rest, rest from the turmoil and apprehension of the world, rest from our own tortured thoughts, rest from the ceaseless stirring of critical and unforgiving impulses. Give to each of us a great calmness of spirit, a confidence in the shadow of your protection, beneath the cross of Jesus.
Throned upon the awful tree,
King of grief I watch with Thee
Darkness veils Your anguished face
None its lines of woe can trace
None can tell what pangs unknown
Hold You silent and alone
Silent through those three dread hours
Wrestling with the evil power
Left alone with human sin
Gloom around You and within
Till the appointed time is nigh
Till the Lamb of God may die.
FAMILY ROOM
The Holiest Time of the Year
Our worship together is always a remembrance of the saving
Passion of Jesus. During Holy Week we set aside time for "telling
the story" in its fullness. As always, the blessings we receive are
proportional to what we bring of ourselves to the experience. All
of us, the Our Divine Savior family, are called to full participation.
Passion (Palm) Sunday is the triumphant beginning. We don't
remain in this place of triumph because by the end of the Gospel
we are keenly aware of the journey of suffering that will unfold
before the everlasting triumph of the Resurrection. We leave in a
somber mood, preparing to focus on the Holy Week ahead.
Holy Thursday evening is the start of the Triduum, the church's
celebration of the three holy events that are linked with one
another - the Last Supper, the Agony and Crucifixion, and the time
in the tomb. The Triduum ends with the Easter Vigil Mass of the
Resurrection. All of these liturgies are regarded as one long
celebration of the mystery, so the intent is that we are all in a
prayerful place continuously during this time, not only inside the
church. We are asked to respect the need for SILENCE. Although
we usually gather and greet one another before Mass, during the
Triduum we are asked to enter in silence, already in prayer. This is
especially important at the end of the Holy Thursday Mass, when
the Body of Christ in the host is moved to the chapel of repose.
Watch as the church is stripped of all decoration, even the candles.
Reflect on the dramatic difference from our usual ways of doing
things. Our silence symbolizes our understanding of the gravity of
the events we re-enact. You will be asked from the altar, too, to
exit in silence, without a hymn - this is a universal request to
Catholics everywhere. (As you know, our church allows outside
voices to carry inside, so please continue this silence until you
reach your car.)
Good Friday is an intrinsic part of the story. We gather to
remember and to share in the way of the Cross, in awe at the
sacrifice made to save us. Again, please enter and exit in silence.
On Holy Saturday we gather outside, and begin by listening to
the story - the unfolding of God's mercy to his people from the
creation of man on to our salvation. It takes a while to take it all
in; in fact, we never will truly grasp this until we enter heaven.
We sit in candle-light as we hear over and over the love God has
shown his people. At the Gloria, our hearts join in triumphant
rejoicing - we're saved! Jesus Christ is Risen! Alleluia! We share
our joy with the new members of our family, the Catechumens and
Candidates who will receive the sacraments of Baptism, Holy
Communion, and Confirmation on this memorable day.
May we all be blessed by our heartfelt participation in these
liturgies.
