“John Paul II’s Theology of the Body addresses ... taken together, constitute a kind of theological time bomb set to go off, with dramatic consequences, sometime in the Third Millennium of the Church.”

— George Weigel, Witness to Hope

The Theology of the Body Institute has been presenting, training, and educating men and women around the world for more than a decade.Individuals and groups from parishes, dioceses, and lay organizations have been transformed by a Theology of the Body Institute program that awakens a personal sense of human dignity in light of the culture’s most pressing and confusing issues. Many today are seeking clarity on what it means to be men and women, to be in communion with God, and to understand their sexuality as an intimate part of who they are and who they are created to be.

A Theology of the Body Institute program presents an introduction to the Pope Saint John Paul II’s Theology of the Body for audiences at all levels — parishioners, lay leaders, Church leaders, and anyone seeking to know more about the meaning of their life, their relationship with God, and his divine plan for their life.

PRESENTATIONS & PROGRAMSIn the wake of this modern “sexual revolution,” Pope St. John Paul II proposed a “Theology of the Body” to restore the “truth about man” as the foundation to a Culture of Life.

Realizing that contemporary approaches to sexuality too often failed to convey the divine origins of human love and embodiment, the Pope devoted the first major teaching project of his pontificate—129 Wednesday audiences between September 1979 and November 1984—to the original and enduring dignity of masculinity and femininity in God’s divine plan. In these talks, the Pope meditated on the “Great Mystery” of the union of man and woman proclaiming and foreshadowing the eternal union of Christ and the Church. These talks make up his remarkable teaching now known at the Theology of the Body.

By helping us understand this profound interconnection between sexuality and the Christian mystery, the Theology of the Body not only paves the way for lasting renewal of marriage and the family, it enables everyone to rediscover “the meaning of the whole of existence, the meaning of life.” The Theology of the Body is the manifesto of the Culture of Life.

The fundamental misunderstanding and rejection of the meaning of the human body and its sexuality addressed by Pope Saint John Paul II is the root of what he coined as the “culture of death.” The promotion of same-sex marriage, contraception, abortion and euthanasia, in vitro fertilization and maternal surrogacy, no-fault divorce, the “hook-up” culture, and the mainstreaming of pornography — all of these issues arise largely out of a lack of understanding or rejection of the truth about the human person.

WHAT IS THEOLOGY OF THE BODY?

Speaker Kit | 76 | Theology of the Body Institute

The Theology of the Body is most often cast as an extended teaching on sex and marriage. This presentation demonstrates this teaching as a “lens” through which to view, understand, and share the Gospel message itself. The presentation helps participants better understand that the Church’s teaching on life and love is not “imposed” from the outside, but corresponds perfectly with the deepest desires of the human heart. This session would be perfect for Catechists and other pastoral ministers.

Length: Half-day program Audience: Catechists and pastoral ministers Facility: Typically held in large parish, retreat center, or similar diocesan venue

Theology of the Body and the New Evangelization

This full introduction to Theology of the Body is designed to engage the audience, while giving them a thorough understanding of God’s Plan for Humanity – a plan stamped right in their own bodies. This Introduction to Pope Saint John Paul II’s teachings will encourage attendees to see the redemption of their sexuality as the key to happiness, uncovering the truth behind the lies of lust and pornography, and how they can be overcome. The study guide can be utilized afterward for follow-up adult faith formation Theology of the Body studies.

Length: Half-day or full-day program Audience: Popular offering for all audiences, college age, and above Facility: Typically held in large parish, retreat center, or similar diocesan venue

This seminar shares Pope Saint John Paul II’s meditations on the beauty and mystery of living out celibacy. In striving to live out heaven on earth, those consecrated to the celibate vocation call the faithful to a greater communion with God. By inviting attendees to a greater holiness, the presentation celebrates the consecrated life by sharing the basics of the Theology of the Body to assist in their pastoral duties, as well as in their personal, on-going formation. This program is considered by many dioceses to be an invaluable resource in the life of our current and future shepherds.

Length: Half-day or full-day program Audience: Priests, seminarians, religious, and consecrated men and women Facility: Typically held in large parish, retreat center, or similar diocesan venue

Introduction to Theology of the Body for Clergy, Religious, and Consecrated

Who is woman in God’s plan of salvation? What is the “feminine genius” about which Pope Saint John Paul II so often spoke? This popular presentation for women explores the great dignity God has granted to woman as the “masterpiece” of his creation.

Length: Half-day or full-day program Audience: Women, religious, and consecrated Facility: Typically held in large parish, retreat center, or similar diocesan venue

Woman: God’s Masterpiece

Reflecting on Christ’s key words about sexuality, this presentation demonstrates how the Gospel calls men not to repress their masculine, God-given desires, but to experience the redemption of their desires. Only by “beholding Christ” in his body “given up for us” can men find the true meaning of their own masculinity.

Length: Half-day program Audience: Men, including clergy Facility: Typically held in large parish, retreat center, or similar diocesan venue

Behold the Man: The Redemption of Masculinity in Christ

The “porn-ified” culture has created in modern man a certain sense of “sexual abuse” that has brought about a need for deep healing from the diseased images and distorted attitudes that invaded the culture and individual lives. The presentation proclaims the good news that Christ came into the world to restore creation to the purity of its origins and explores the integration of body and soul in Christ as the path of an authentic sexual healing.

Length: Half-day program Audience: Catechists and pastoral ministers. Facility: Typically held in large parish, retreat center, or similar diocesan venue

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING

“It was in 2015 that Bill Donaghy helped to give a workshop on the Theology of the Body to the bishops of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. I remember that it was an excellent program. Bill Donaghy combined effectively a careful theological explanation of St. John Paul II’s reflections on the body with personal and human stories to illustrate the points being made. His presentation was clear, organized and presented in an effective and convincing manner.”

Bishop William Fey, OFM, Cap. | Bishop of Kimbe, Papua New Guinea

“I’m a great admirer of Bill Donaghy’s work for two reasons: his fidelity as a Catholic, and his exceptional talents as a speaker and teacher. It’s a pleasure to recommend him.”

Archbishop Charles Chaput, OFM, Cap. | Archbishop of Philadelphia

“Bill Donaghy effectively transmits the beauty and brilliance of the Theology of the Body because he has allowed it to penetrate into his own heart and life. His message about identity, mission, faith, and family is direly needed not only in the culture at large, but within every parish as well.”

Jason Evert | Author, Speaker, Co-Founder of Chastity Project

“The presentations by the Theology of the Body Institute give you a refreshing and healing perspective on love, life, and opens up a place in your heart you never knew (or forgot) existed! Cannot recommend these courses enough!”

Emily Rebekah | Event Participant

“I have had several occasions to experience Bill Donaghy’s presentations through the auspices of the Theology of the Body Institute. I have found them to be not only theologically sound and spiritually moving, but also personally challenging - in the very best way. His use of art and approach of the truths of our faith through beauty and humor proved to be an uplifting experience on every level.”

Fr. John Keehner | Pastor, Diocese of Youngstown, Ohio

“All of the novices and Sisters who attended the five day immersion into the Theology of the Body, with Jen Settle said that they wished everyone could know about this. This is why we had the course – so that they could carry it to others. We enjoyed ourselves, were very edified, and learned a great deal. Our Regional director was in attendance and was very happy with the week.”

Sr. Basilia Marie, MC

“Presentations by the Theology of the Body Institute provide compelling insights, as well as inspiring heart insights! The audience is moved to think more deeply about the beauty of God’s plan for love and life.”
