Guilford County

HistoryThe county was formed in 1771 from parts of Rowan County and Orange County. It was named for Francis North, 1st Earl of Guildford, father of Frederick North, Lord North, British Prime Minister from 1770 to 1782. The Quaker church played a major role in the European settlement of the county, and numerous Quakers still live in the county. On March 15, 1781, the Battle of Guilford Court House was fought in present-day Greensboro between Generals Charles Cornwallis and Nathanael Greene during the American Revolution. This battle marked a key turning point in the Revolutionary War in the South. Although General Cornwallis, the British Commander, held the field at the end of the battle, his losses were so severe that he decided to withdraw to the Carolina and Virginia coastline, where he could receive reinforcements and his battered army could be protected by the British Navy. His decision ultimately led to his defeat later in 1781 at Yorktown, Virginia, by a combined force of American and French troops and warships. In 1779 the southern third of Guilford County became Randolph County. In 1785 the northern half of its remaining territory became Rockingham County.Due to the large number of Quakers living in Guilford, many of the county's residents were opposed to slavery before the Civil War. The county was a stop on the famous Underground Railroad, which provided escaped slaves with a route to freedom in the North. Levi Coffin, one of the founders of the "railroad", was a Guilford County native. He is credited with personally helping over 2,000 slaves escape to freedom before the war.SCHOOLS

Forsyth County

History of Forsyth County

Forsyth County began as a Moravian settlement in 1753 when Bishop August Gottlieb Spangenberg acquired a hundred-thousand acre tract of land from Lord Granville, one of the lord proprietors of North Carolina. The Moravians called their land Wachovia after the Austrian estate of Count Nicholas Lewis von Zinzendorf, an early protector of the Moravian church.

After the two settlements of Bethabara and Bethania were established, the town of Salem was begun in 1766 as the central town in Wachovia. Salem grew rapidly both as a religious center and as a center for crafts and trades.

Forsyth County was named in honor of Colonel Benjamin Forsyth, a respected landowner in Stokes County. Colonel Forsyth distinguished himself in battle during the war of 1812 at Odelltown, Canada, where he was mortally wounded.

In 1849, the North Carolina legislature created the new County of Forsyth out of part of Stokes County. In 1851, the town of Winston was named as the County Seat. The courthouse square was laid one mile north of Salem square with plans for the street of the two towns to run together.

In 1949, Willie H. Johnston, Jr., a Carver High Student, designed the Forsyth County seal during a contest to celebrate the County’s Centennial.

Forsyth County has progressed from its rustic past to a modern community which offers a variety of services to its citizens.

Climate in the Triad

The Triad is located in the Northern Piedmont section of North Carolina between the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Atlantic Coast and has its benefits. Winter temperatures and rainfall are both modified by the mountain barriers. Shallow cold air masses moving across the Plains States tend to be stopped or turned aside by the mountains, while deeper masses are lifted in crossing so as to lose some of their moisture and have their temperature raised a few degrees.

Freezing temperatures occur on more than half the winter days, but zero weather is almost unknown. Flurries of light snow may fall when cold air blows across the mountains, however, glazing is more common in this region than in most of North Carolina, but only occasionally becomes severe enough to do much damage.

Summer precipitation is largely from local thunderstorms. The frequency of these showers and the amount of rain received varies greatly from year to year and from place to place. Some areas are sometimes without significant rain in late spring or early summer for two or more weeks, while other areas in the vicinity may be well watered.

There are typically 217 days of sunshine every year. The greatest amount of rainfall occurs in July and September, while the driest are February and October.
