It has been an exciting year as President of the

Gloucester Lyceum and Sawyer Free Library!

Our Board has welcomed energetic new members

who have brought renewed vitality and attention

to meeting the Library’s challenges. Director Kelsey

and her excellent staff have provided service,

care, and welcome to the Library’s many patrons.

Collectively we are all united to make our Library

a great place and a free resource to all seeking

an avenue to knowledge, self-improvement, and

advancement. Our Library is open to all!

Much has occurred over the past year. Most

importantly, we are now assured of receiving a

state grant to build our Library’s future – providing

we can raise matching funds privately – whether

that future holds a new building or a renovated

existing one. That decision hasn’t been made yet,

and won’t be until completion of our studies, now

underway, of the best way to preserve, refurbish,

and utilize our existing physical plant, including

our precious Saunders House. Upon completion,

our architects and the Board will be able to

determine the costs, benefits, and drawbacks of

building new or renovation.

In order to raise the necessary funds, we have

hired a magnificently qualified firm – Library

Strategies – to consult with us in structuring a

capital campaign. The company’s single focus

is helping libraries to achieve their goals, and it

boasts a long list of successes.

We formed a new Board committee dedicated

to preserving and rehabilitating Saunders

House. To that end, they have contracted with a

preservation architect to make recommendations.

We have continued to upgrade our

technology, including both digital collections

along with devices that circulate and what

remains in the Library proper, for those who

may lack access at home.

Our active offerings – lectures, discussions,

presentations by artists and others, book groups,

educational collaborations, activities for teens

and children – continue to expand to serve and

empower our diverse community.

In other words, the Sawyer Free Library continues

to both serve the present and look to the future

to fulfill the mission Samuel Sawyer envisioned:

providing our city with “the food of the mind.”

John Brennan President, The Board of Trustees

A public library is the most democratic thing in the world. People who

love literature have at least part of their minds immune to indoctrination.

If you read, you can learn to think for yourself. –Doris Lessing
