‘Pandemic is far from over’TDT | Manama

Health minister warned people in Bahrain yes-terday that the corona-

virus infection could spike again if the behaviours don’t change.

Bahrain has reported a sud-den spike in COVID-19 cases, ac-cording to the National Medical Taskforce for Combating the

Coronavirus, particularly in the past two weeks.

The task force has said that people here have allowed them-selves to get into such a predica-ment with the “non-compliance fo precautionary guidelines dur-ing Ashura holidays.”

This resulted in a distressing spike in the caseloads over the

past week. Faeqa bint Said Al-Saleh said

that such “irresponsible” behav-iours if continued, would only result in triggering a surge in the infections while warning that the “pandemic is far from over”.

Those who “failed to comply with mandatory procedures, caused the infections to surge

in the past days,” Al-Saleh said. The caseloads will continue to

surge if the “irresponsible par-ties continue their complacency and recklessness.”

This calls for a “collective commitment to health proto-cols from all of the people in the Kingdom,” Al-Saleh stressed.

He has made major contribu-tions in highlighting Bahrain’s landmark achievements while also reporting widely on region-al developments.

Williams, who has worked alongside journalists from dif-

ferent countries, stressed that his time in the Kingdom has

gifted him many unforgettable memories.

“Not many can boast of living 42 years in a job – not a bad shift – and they have been wonderful ones.”

Williams was recently hon-oured by Bahrain Journalists Association (BJA) for his ded-ication, loyalty and countless contributions to journalism in Bahrain.

“I feel privileged to be hon-oured by my peers at the BJA and appreciate the good work you are doing in promoting Press freedoms and reforms in Bahrain,” Williams said on the occasion.

COVID-19 violations: Rooftop cafe shut

The Inspection Depart-ment at the Ministry of In-

dustry, Commerce and Tourism shut a rooftop cafe for serving food and drinks to expatriate workers without adhering to COVID-19 precautionary meas-

ures. Officials said at the time of the

raid the restaurant had 35 cus-tomers, all expatriate workers.

Health officials said the res-taurant failed to ensure social distancing measures between tables or any other health re-quirements for serving food.

The officials were acting on a tip-off received at the Al-Naeem Police Station regarding a cafe serving food and drinks to cus-tomers on the roof of the res-taurant.

“The Inspection Department closed the café administratively, as the police evacuated the res-

taurant by taking into custody all those present,” an official added.

The Ministry of Indus-try, Commerce and Tourism stressed the importance of ad-hering to the health require-ments while warning that viola-tors will face legal actions.

620 tested positive in 24 hoursTDT | Manama

As many as 620 people tested positive for the

COVID-19 infection in the past 24 hours in the King-dom, taking the overall tally past the 64,499 mark.

Meanwhile, with one more casualty yesterday, the death toll increased to 221.

Those tested positive yesterday includes 98 ex-patriate workers, 519 new contacts of positive cases, and 3 travel-related cases.

Bahrain also recorded 599 recoveries yesterday, raising total recoveries to 57,299.


Women need more workplace supportBahrain FinTech Gender Balance Report 2020 throws light on challenges Bahraini women face in the worksplace

A greater amount of focus is required to achieve gen-der balance in workplac-

es in the Kingdom, where chal-lenges are in plenty for Bahraini women, a new gender balance report says.

The report, which endorses the best practices and recom-mendations aligned with the Supreme Council of Women, measures the progress of the female in three areas and sin-gles out employment as the area having the most disparity in the Kingdom.

Education and society are the other two areas the report sur-veyed to identify the existing gap between male and female workforce.

According to the Bahrain FinTech Gender Balance report 2020, differences between male and female in the field of em-ployment in the Kingdom was at 5.7 per cent.

Globally, the labour participa-tion rate for males and females is at 68.3pc versus 47.2pc, respec-tively, the report says.

The report also expresses con-cerns on the considerably lower than the global average of the female participation rate in the MENA region, which is now at 26.1pc - a “very high disparity in the employment market,” the report points out.

In Education, according to the report, the disparity between male and female graduates is relatively low at 4.7pc.

Out of the three sectors stud-ied, society, the report says, is the lowest category of concern with a disparity of 2.3pc.

Women enjoy greater social support

The report finds that wom-en enjoy widespread support in Bahrain, owing to several initi-atives launched in her favour. “This includes work-life balance, family support, funding oppor-tunities and other factors.”

The report, which also analy-ses opportunities for females in the FinTech space, finds only a narrow gap exists between male and female general employees, where 30 pc of the FinTechs surveyed have female in their founding team.

The Gender Balance report attributes this achievement to

Bahrain’s readiness to venture into the FinTech field in regards to having the overall foundation for talent, infrastructure, pro-grams, and regulations.

Financial services industryIn Bahrain’s financial services

industry, the report sees a gradu-al increase in female representa-tion, where the rise is 3.3pc over the last ten years.

The increase is attributed to an uptick in job opportunities in the industry, with the focus be-ing is on innovation and strategy.

However, according to the Bahrain Ministry of Education, there is a gradual decrease in female representation in degrees

that are relevant to the finan-cial services industry. Bahrain now has 3,718 female Bahraini employees, compared to 5,712 male employees in the financial services industry.

ICT IndustryThe ICT industry in Bahrain,

the report points out, remains as a male-dominated industry, with only 1,523 female employ-ees, compared to 5,700 male em-ployees.

Citing an uptick in training programmes for developing the technical skills of females, the report expects things to get bet-ter in the coming years.

Startup Genome report 2019, says have a globally high per-centage of female founders, but that is lower in the context of FinTech, where the number of female founders is 30pc of the surveyed FinTechs.

The upper-management in FinTechs also appears to share similar results while general employees otherwise suggest a narrower gap between male and female, the report adds.

The recommendationThe report recommends pro-

moting opportunities in the in-dustry in the upcoming years regardless of sex, to increase female representation in upper-level manage-ment by implementing national targets for fe-male board positions and promote a flexible working environment to encourage female em-ployment among others.

The report also rec-o m m e n d s e n -c o u r a g i n g s t u d e n t s to pursue S T E M d e -grees as it will lay the foundation and lower the barrier to entry to emerging industries.

C a p a c i t y b u i l d i n g ,

mentorship and training are the other areas the report suggests improvement to alleviate the challenges faced by employees to improve their career oppor-tunities.

The report also points out that Bahrain has recorded advanced efforts in balancing the ex-isting gap between male and female, specifically in the financial sector.

Bahrain Chamber announced restructuring its committees

with new members, which now have 15 per cent women partic-ipation.

The chamber now has 110 members on its ten committees, which would now consolidate

efforts to empower the private sector and bolster the national economy.

Explaining the move, Head of Bahrain Chamber’s Steering Group Sonia Janahi said the re-structuring, which changed 30 pc of the committee members, expanded the committees and ensured diverse participation.

The restructuring is in line with the committees’ guidebook approved by the 29th board of directors and endorsed by the board and the executive bureau.

During a virtual meeting held, members discussed the scope of the committees, its guidebook, and a new performance evalua-tion mechanism.

According to the astronomical calendar, the seasonal transition occurs on September 22, the date of the Autumn equinox.

Astronomer Muhammad Reda Al-Asfour says signs are already here for us to know that nature is gearing up for the equinox.

But do you know where exact-ly is the best place to spend the Autumnal, or fall equinox?

The answer probably is at a Mayan pyramid.

Yes, you heard it right!For the Mayans, these days

were of supreme importance, and they paid homage to these celestial positions.

So, if you could, venture to the ancient city of Chichén Itza in the Mexican state of Yucatán on a spring or autumnal equinox, to get awed by the astounding performance of the Sun’s de-scent from the top of the Temple Kukulcan.

The staircases are built at a carefully calculated angle that it looks like an enormous snake of

sunlight slithers down the stairs on the day of the equinox.

Also, know that it is not just Mayans, but many cultures around the world hold feasts and celebrate festivals and hol-idays to mark the September equinox.

This Tuesday, on 22 Septem-ber 2020, at 4.30 pm, here in Bahrain also Autumn will mark its entry with the phenomenon known as “autumnal equinox”. The season will last for 89 days, 20 hours, and 31 minutes.

Astronomers say an equinox happens when the Sun shines directly on the Equator.

In other words, the September equinox occurs the moment the Sun crosses the celes-tial Equator – the

imaginary line in the sky above Earth’s Equator – from north to south. This happens either on September 22, 23, or 24 every year.

Also during equinox night and day are nearly the same length -12 hours, all over the world.

However, understand that equinoxes are not day-long events, e v e n t h o u g h many choose to celebrate all day. I n -

stead, they occur at the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator – the imaginary line in the sky above Earth’s Equator.

Explain- ing Al Asfour said, “ O n the day of the

autumnal equinox, the Sun will rise completely from the east-ern point and set completely from the west point, while its position gradually tilts towards the south.”

“The Sun’s rays on this day will be completely perpendic-ular to the equator as night and day are roughly equal.”

On next Sunday, Bahrain will experience the same length of the day, and night, he said, “with the Sun rising at 05:28 am and setting at 05:28 pm with midday at 11:28 pm.”

Explaining, he said the onset of autumn in the northern hem-isphere means, “night begins to increase at the expense of day, and temperatures begin to gradually decrease.”

“However, in the Southern Hemisphere, the opposite hap-pens. As the spring season be-gins, the day begins to increase at the expense of the night, and the temperatures begin to rise gradually.”

In the Southern Hemisphere, it is known as the vernal (spring) equinox and marks the first day of spring.

The phenomenon will contin-ue until 21 December 2020 to the day of the “winter solstice” in the northern hemisphere, and the “summer solstice” in the southern hemisphere.

He explained that the four seasons occur as a result of a tilt of the earth’s axis by 23.5 °, and its rotation around the sun in an elliptical orbit, causing Sun’s rays to fall at different angles on every passing month.

“In the Smile Initiative, we are currently conducting a com-prehensive study of the needs of sick children for laptops and tab-

lets, as it is expected that these devices will be distributed to about 65 children who are not financially able to obtain them.” Al Zayani said.

In response to COVID –19, the school has put in place, under

the wise guidance of the Minis-try of Education, all the neces-sary safety protocols and proce-dures to protect the health and well-being of its learners and all community members. A fully equipped isolation room was set up to isolate any community member who develops a fever. Learners’ drop off and pick up locations have been carefully planned and visuals have been posted around the school cam-pus to promote healthy practic-es. Sanitizers have been placed in classrooms and at entrances and everyone’s temperature is regularly checked throughout

Al Baraka to change operational structure TDT | Manama

Al Baraka Banking Group (ABG) has initiated the process of converting

the license of its parent compa-ny in Bahrain from a wholesale bank to a category 1 investment firm, subject to regulatory and shareholders’ approvals.

Upon receiving the new li-cense, the Group shall continue to be supervised by the Central Bank of Bahrain.

GCCCAC produced an arbitral award in 57 days TDT | Manama

One of the arbitral tribunals in the GCCCAC announced

producing their verdict in a dis-pute in just 57 days.

The arbitral ruling of the GCCCAC is generally consid-ered final and binding and are irrevocable.

Commenting, GCCCAC’s Act-ing Secretary-General Nasser ALMogahwi said, “This ruling is considered one of the fast-est rulings released by the GCCCAC.”

The tribunal which consisted of a sole arbitrator gave the final

verdict in a dispute between a company from the United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

The dispute revolved around a contract for supplying elec-trical energy, and the parties of the dispute have agreed for the applicable law for this dispute to be the Yemeni.

According to the case, the respondent company signed a contract to buy energy from an official entity by its name instead of the claimant.

The sole arbitrator rejected the case for lacking a sound legal base.

GCCCAC produced its fastest ruling in 2014 when a verdict was issued in 40 days.

TikTok files complaint against Trump administrationReuters

Popular video-sharing app TikTok has asked a

US judge to block the Trump administration from enforc-ing a ban on the Chinese social media network, ac-cording to court documents filed late on Friday.

TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance Ltd., filed a complaint in a Wash-ington federal court chal-lenging the recent prohib-itory moves by the Trump administration.

The US Commerce De-partment announced a ban on Friday blocking peo-ple in the United States from downloading Chi-nese-owned messaging app WeChat and TikTok start-ing Sept. 20.

The ban was being intro-duced for political reasons, TikTok and ByteDance al-leged in their complaint. TikTok also said the ban would violate the com-pany’s First Amendment rights.

US President Donald Trump, who has been locked in a long-running trade dispute with China, issued an executive order on Aug. 6 that prohibited US transactions with the Chi-nese owners of messaging app WeChat and TikTok.

Both ByteDance and Tik-Tok are seeking a “declara-tory” judgment and an or-der “invalidating and pre-liminarily and permanently enjoining the Prohibitions and the August 6 order,” ac-cording to the complaint.

Two people were killed and 14 others wounded in

a shooting in Rochester, New York, police said yesterday.

The shooting appeared to start at a backyard party just be-fore 12:30 a.m., with about 100 people running to and from a

“very chaotic scene”, said Roch-ester Interim Police Chief Mark Simmons.

“We have 16 confirmed vic-tims of shooting. And I’m sad to announce that two of those 16 received a fatal wound,” S immons said at a news conference.

The two people killed were

a man and woman in their late teens or early 20s, he said.

Simmons said it was unclear if the shooting was a targeted or random act of violence. The wounded were being treated in hospital and their injuries were not thought to be life threat-ening.

Lebanon army surveys 85,000 building units post-Beirut blastReuters | Beirut

Lebanon’s army said it has carried out a survey of

more than 85,000 dwellings, businesses and other building units damaged by the massive Beirut port blast last month.

The August 4 explosion of hundreds of tonnes of ammo-nium nitrate stored at Beirut port killed more than 190 people, wounded thousands and ravaged large parts of the capital.

“A total of 85,744 affected units have been surveyed,” the army said.

It had surveyed 60,818 hous-ing units, 19,115 businesses, 1,137 heritage units, 962 res-taurants, 82 teaching institu-tions and 12 hospitals, among other unis.

It recorded almost 550,000 square metres of glass ravaged,

and well as 140,000 square metres of glass facades broken.

More than 108,000 doors had been damaged, the survey showed.

The army said it was still looking for nine people -- three Lebanese, five Syrians and an Egyptian -- still missing after the blast.

The survey “is considered to be sufficient, and there is therefore no need for further surveys by donor countries”, it said in a statement.

The army said the donors, non-governmental organisa-tions or volunteers could re-quest access to the results.

On August 9, internation-al donors pledged over 250 million euros (around $300 million) in emergency aid, in a video conference jointly organised by France and the United Nations.

India arrests nine al Qaeda militants planning ‘terrorist attacks’Reuters | New Delhi

India’s National Inves-tigation Agency (NIA)

said yesterday it has ar-rested nine al Qaeda mil-itants who were planning attacks in several locations including the capital New Delhi.

“The group was planning to undertake terrorist at-tacks at vital installations in India with an aim to kill innocent people and strike terror in their minds,” the country’s main counter-ter-rorism arm said in a state-ment.

Those arrested “were motivated to undertake attacks at multiple plac-es” including the capital region.

Six of the militants were arrested in the eastern state of West Bengal and while three in the southern state of Kerala, the NIA said, add-ing the individuals were “associated with Pakistan sponsored module of al Qa-eda”.

back his upcoming nomination for the Supreme Court “with-out delay” as the issue upended the election only a day after the death of liberal stalwart Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

The 87-year-old justice, im-mensely popular among Dem-ocrats, died Friday after a long battle with cancer.

Coming shortly before the November 3 election, in which Trump trails his Democratic rival Joe Biden in the polls, the vacancy offers Republicans a chance to lock in a conserva-tive majority at the court for decades.

The choice of a new jus-

tice would likely affect such far-reaching controversies as abortion, healthcare, gun con-trol and gay rights.

The president’s tweet pushing for the Ginsburg vacancy to be rapidly filled fuelled speculation of a fierce partisan nomination battle at the height of the elec-tion campaign.

The prospect of a Senate confirmation vote before the

election has already brought an explosive response from Democrats, still seething over Republicans preventing Barack Obama from filling a court va-cancy through most of the 2016 election year.

“Democrats are hopping mad about this -- not just a lit-tle mad,” University of Virginia political scientist Larry Sabato told CNN.

Biden made clear on Friday that any nomination should await the results of the election.

“The voters should pick the president and the president should pick the justice for the Senate to consider,” he said.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said that “this vacancy should not be filled un-til we have a new president” -- carefully echoing the words of Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell in 2016 when he blocked Obama nominee Mer-rick Garland.

Republicans in theory have the Senate votes to push through a Trump nominee, but they could be blocked by only a handful of defections.

Storms Alpha and Beta named for Greek alphabet, second time ever

Greek alphabet Friday to name Atlantic storms for only the second time ever after the 2020 hurricane season blew through their usual list, ending on Tropical Storm Wilfred.

Tropical Storm Beta was packing maximum sustained winds of 40 miles (65 kilom-eters) per hour in the Gulf of Mexico, some 280 miles off the mouth of the Rio Grande, the National Hurricane Center said.

It is expected to reach hurricane intensity over the weekend, according to the Mi-ami-based center.

At the same time, subtropical storm Alpha was forming on the other side of the Atlantic, some 120 miles off the coast of Portugal. With maximum sustained winds of 45 miles per hour, it is not expected to intensify, the NHC said.

The storms were named after letters of the Greek al-phabet, after Tropical Storm Wilfred formed earlier Friday, exhausting the list of names predetermined by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) for tropical storms.

The list consists of 21 male and female names that alter-

nate in alphabetical order and change every year. The WMO chooses names that are easily recognizable in a region where several languages are spoken, so no names starting with X, Y or Z are chosen.

In the unusual event that the list is used up, the WMO iden-tifies storms by letters of the Greek alphabet: alpha, beta, gamma, delta... as has been the case this year, which has seen an unusually active hurricane season.

“Get out the Greek alphabet for the rest of 2020,” the NHC said in an update on Wilfred.

Meteorologist MJ Ventrice of The Weather Company tweeted that “this is the sec-ond time in history we’ll be using the Greek Alphabet.”

The first time, he added was in 2005, when Hurricanes Ka-trina and Wilma devastated Louisiana and Florida, respec-tively.

Those names, as well as Maria, Irma and Harvey, have been retired permanently from the WMO lists due to the dev-astation they caused.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Ted-dy has reached Category 4, the second-highest level. Teddy is swirling around the central Atlantic and could pass near Bermuda, just a week after Hurricane Paulette.

“Female Force: Kamala Har-ris,” part of Tidalwave Produc-tions’ Political Power series, is set for release on Oct. 21, a day after she turns 56. That is less than two weeks before the Nov. 3 US election.

The publisher on its web-site describes Harris as “full of grit and determination,” and says that her “no-nonsense approach and bi-racial herit-age have made her a popular member of the Democratic party.”

The story begins with her birth in California to Indian biologist Shyamala Gopalan and Jamaican economics professor Donald Harris, and follows her path to becoming the second female African-American and first Asian-American US sen-ator.

A dramatic moment in the Democratic Party’s presiden-tial nomination contest is fea-

Scientists are providing a fuller understanding of the

essential role that sleep plays in brain health, identifying an abrupt transition at about 2.4 years of age when its prima-ry purpose shifts from brain building to maintenance and repair.

Researchers said they con-ducted a statistical analysis on data from more than 60 sleep studies. They looked at sleep time, duration of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, brain size and body size, and devised a mathematical model for how sleep changes during develop-ment.

There are basically two types of sleep, each tied to specific brain waves and neuronal ac-tivity. REM, with the eyes mov-ing quickly from side to side behind closed eyelids, is deep sleep with vivid dreams. Non-REM sleep is largely dreamless.

During REM sleep, the brain forms new neural connections by building and strengthening synapses - the junctions be-tween nerve cells, or neurons - that enable them to commu-nicate, reinforcing learning and consolidating memories.

During sleep, the brain also repairs the modicum of daily neurological damage it typi-cally experiences to genes and proteins within neurons as well as clearing out byproducts that build up.

At about 2.4 years of age, the findings showed, sleep’s pri-mary function changed from

building and cutting connec-tions during REM sleep to neu-ral repair during both REM and non-REM sleep.

“It was shocking to us that this transition was like a switch and so sharp,” said Van Savage, a UCLA professor of ecology and evolutionary biology and of computational medicine who is a senior author of the research published in the journal Sci-ence Advances.

REM sleep declines with age. Newborns, who can sleep about 16 hours daily, spend about 50% of their sleeping time in REM, but there is a pronounced drop-off at around 2.4 years. It drops to about 25% by age 10 and to about 10% to 15% around age 50.

Russia’s leading opposition politician Alexei Navalny announced yesterday he

could now walk with a “trem-ble”, and gave the first detailed account of his recovery nearly a month after being poisoned with Novichok nerve agent.

The 44-year-old Kremlin critic posted a photo of himself walking downstairs on Insta-gram and described how earli-er symptoms had included the inability to form words.

“Now I am a guy whose legs tremble when he takes the stairs,” he wrote, detailing mo-ments of “despair” as doctors help him overcome the effects of the nerve agent.

This latest update on his progress came after posted to Instagram on Tuesday that he had spent a first day breathing unassisted, writing ironically: “It’s an amazing process that’s undervalued by many. I recom-mend it.”

The anti-corruption cam-paigner fell ill on a plane from Siberia to Moscow on August 20 and spent two days in a Russian hospital before being airlifted to Berlin’s Charite hospital.

Navalny said in his update that during the initial days of his recovery, he had needed therapy to help him recover his speech

as he struggled to form words.

‘A real performance’ “Not long ago, I didn’t recog-

nise people and couldn’t under-stand how to speak,” he said.

“How to find a word and how to make it mean something? This was all totally incompre-hensible.

“I didn’t know how to express my despair either and so I was just silent.”

The nerve agent Novichok disrupts communication be-tween the brain, the main or-gans and muscles, while doctors say it gradually clears from the body.

Navalny, who said that he did not remember the early stage of his recovery, thanked the “fan-tastic doctors” treating him at Charite hospital.

He now saw a “clear path, although not a short one” to recovery, he said.

The message is characteristic of Navalny’s fluent, ironic style of writing.

An avid user of social media, Navalny said he hoped soon to “become the highest form of life in modern society” and be “able to scroll through Instagram and add likes without thinking about it”.

Suggesting he is struggling with fine motor skills, he said he was still unable to use a phone -- meaning friends or family probably posted the messages for him -- while “pouring myself a glass of water is a real perfor-mance”.

Kremlin accusations ‘absurd’ Navalny has not assigned any

blame in his messages so far but supporters and some European leaders have said that poisoning with Novichok, a military-grade nerve agent, points to a state-or-dered crime.

The Kremlin has dismissed as “absurd” allegations it was behind the poisoning, saying it wants to know what happened.

that her faith in God has tak-en her career to new plac-es she never thought were possible.

The “Switched” executive producer and star told Fox News that before putting her career into God’s hands she was dealing with self-es-teem issues stemming from her work in the modelling industry.

“It’s interesting because when I was involved in com-mercials and modelling and doing things without God and doing things that did not have a faith message, I was constantly faced with scrutiny and felt like I nev-er measured up,” Weider explained. “I was actually hurting my self-esteem, but when I gave my life to God it’s amazing how he opened up so many doors.”

“I really believe when we honour God with our gifts, he does make things happen and he can make all things

“There were all these people around me, and one of the photographer’s as-sistants [was] retouching the models’ photos on a big computer in real time. He was retouching her thighs and making them skinni-er and he was removing her freckles,” Weider said. “I was like, if I’m not good enough and these [other] models aren’t good enough, [this] whole modelling in-dustry is so false. I just knew I was meant for more than that, to be totally honest.”

Weider set her sights on transitioning into a posi-tion behind the camera and now develops scripts and produces projects she feels are sending a more positive message to young people, especially girls.

Tadej Pogacar all but clinched the Tour de France yesterday after

his Slovenian compatriot Pri-moz Roglic let a 57 seconds lead slip in a tricky individual time-trial, the last day of real racing.

The 21-year-old Pogacar will lead the peloton into Paris on Sunday wearing the overall leader’s yellow jersey and, bar-ring disaster, will climb onto the top step of the podium.

Staggeringly, the youngster will also pull on the polka dot jersey as best climber on the Tour, and also the white jersey as best under-25s rider.

“My dream was just to take part,” said Pogacar on his first Tour de France.

“I could hear nothing on the final climb and I went for it with everything,” he said.

Bahrain, for the second consec-utive week with BRAVE CF 42, on September 24th. The promotion released the full fight card of the event and it brings 12 different nations represented inside the cage, apart from the first round of the prestigious Flyweight World Title Tournament.

The 12 countries, from four different continents, sending fighters to BRAVE CF 42 are: United States, Finland, Russia, Brazil, Bahrain, Wales, Kyr-gyzstan, Sweden, France, Phil-ippines, Poland, and India.

In the main event triple-header, six of the best fighters in the division will start their paths towards glory. Jose Torres, Sean Santella, Ab-dul Hussein, Zach Makovsky, Flavio Queiroz, and Velimurad Alkhasov have been chosen to lead the biggest tournament of the year in its first round.

Their various degrees of ex-perience, their paths towards BRAVE CF, and their fighting styles differ in many ways, but they all have something in com-mon: the thirst for victory and quality to win it all.

Over the course of the next events, BRAVE CF will also or-ganize the last quarter-final match-up which would take place between Dustin Ortiz and Marcel Adur. However, the Bra-zilian Adur was forced to with-draw due to injury and will be

It was a bitter blow, but now training under Din Thomas’ small team in Florida, Torres seems more determined

than ever to return.He will need all the determi-

nation to go past Santella. At 35, ‘’Shorty Rock’’ has dominated the local scene for years, but has a score to settle in the BRAVE CF tournament. He wants to move past Torres to face off against Velimurad Alkhasov, the man who gave him his last defeat in his BRAVE CF debut.

Since then, Sean has amassed a three-fight win streak, and will

return to BRAVE CF in top form and confident of beating the fa-vored Torres with his jiu-jitsu skills and experience. Santella is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, and trains with legendary Ricar-do Almeida. 14 out of his 23 pro-fessional victories have come by way of submission and he hopes to add number 15 against Jose.

Makovsky vs HusseinZach Makovsky’s return to the

BRAVE CF fold can be best de-scribed as a clash of generations. At 36 and with 30 pro fights un-der his belt, he will meet a rising star in Abdul Hussein, who has a 7-1 record, but vast amateur experience.

Fighting out of Finland, ‘’ABBA’’ is an IMMAF world champion and known for his strong submission game. He has four out of seven professional victories via tap-out and will look to expose any weaknesses in Makovsky’s game to score sub number 5.

It will be no easy task, though, as ‘’Fun Size’’ is an excellent wrestler and has also big grap-pling skills, having won the FILA Grappling world championship in 2011. Zach has also beaten a who’s who of big names in the division and will certainly be the favorite to advance to the semifinals.

This is true, especially due

to the fact that Makovsky’s last win was a monumental one - he beat previously undefeated Veli-murad Alkhasov and was able to score takedowns on the sambo world champion, something that no other man was able to do.

Queiroz vs Alkhasov If Sean Santella has a score to

settle with Velimurad Alkhasov, the Russian powerhouse is also looking for revenge. He wants to move up to eventually face Zach Makovsky and erase the only defeat of his pro career so far.

However, before he can think of a rematch with Zach, he will need to go past Flavio Queiroz. The young Brazilian is proba-bly the dark horse of the tour-nament, but his credentials are second to none.

Fighting out of Capital da Luta under former BRAVE CF world champion Lucas Martins, Flavio is a knockout machine, and holds an impressive finishing rate for a Flyweight, with ten of his 12 pro wins coming by stoppage.

Queiroz is also riding a three-fight win streak, including a nas-ty submission victory over Jean Felipe Souza in his BRAVE CF debut, last year in Brazil. Now set for his second bout outside of his own country, Flavio will come in with bad intentions and hoping to impose his gameplan over the sambo world champion.
