Sustainability – one of the most overused
words of today? Everywhere you turn,
people or companies are talking about
what is sustainable. Is it just a buzzword?
We don't think so. To us, sustainability
means protecting what is important to
us all. We recognize that global resources
are limited, that growing threats to the
environment persist, and it makes us think
in new directions. Like other attentive
companies and institutions, we are
investigating new options for the future
to create processes and systems in more
effi cient, ecological and considerate ways.

Progress in flow GEA Tuchenhagen – key components for hygienic processes.
It was in 1931 in the town of Kiel that German engineer Otto Tuchenhagen presented his first system solutions for the dairy industry – the beginning of today's GEA Tuchenhagen range of components that has been setting standards worldwide. The first centrifugal pump followed in 1943, paving the company's way for the future.
In 1967, the first leakproof double seat valve saw its introduction at the company's so-called “engineers' factory”, situated in Büchen (Northern Germany). 1975 became the year of the VARIVENT® valve series – to this day a core component in matrix-piped process plants and a cornerstone in the GEA Tuchenhagen portfolio.

Smart, stable, service-friendly
The new butterfl y valves T-smart 7 continue the series' success story.
pRoDucTS | BUSINESS LINE HYGIENIC VALVE TECHNOLOGY
Butterfl y valves in the long-established T-smart series from GEA Tuchenhagen are used as cost-
effective shut-off elements on valve blocks, panels and pipe fences for gentle product guiding
and easy cleaning. With all-around optimized performance features, the newly developed
T-smart 7 components set out to meet our customers' expectations.
01/2014 INSIDER 15
T-SMART 7Manufacturers are placing ever-increasing requirements on
components in process plants worldwide. T-smart 7 is the
answer in the current GEA Tuchenhagen portfolio. The T-smart 7
series off ers the benefi ts of excellent hygiene, higher ease of
assembly, shorter assembly and maintenance times and thus
higher production uptimes.
The new valves particularly stand out for the new sealing
design: The double-sided valve disc bearing allows a defi ned
seal compression. An optimally designed product area reduces
abrasion and achieves a gentle product handling.
INTERMEDIATE FLANGE VERSIONCompared to the former execution the intermediate fl ange
variant comes as an open design now. The actuator is mounted
on the inner fl anges, as a result of which the valve insert can
be removed conveniently without the actuator having to be
dismantled fi rst.
Apertures in the outer fl anges allow the actuator to be mounted
or changed at any time without removing the valve from the
process line. The open fl ange design permits a screw-by-screw
re-clamping from four to three fl anges during operation,
in order for the removed outer fl ange to be welded onto a
pipework extension, for example.
PNEUMATIC ACTUATORSThe redeveloped pneumatic actuators are compact, deliver
high performance, and all come standard as ATEX-compliant.
They are compatible with all butterfl y valve variants.
Torque maxima towards both end positions make this solution
suitable for use on both normally closed and normally open
valves. Mechanical stops enable exact disk positioning. Air-to-
spring and air-to-air variants are available. The integrated
T.VIS® interface also accommodates optional accessories such
as a booster cylinder for low air pressures, stroke limit stop and
two-position cylinder. u

Energy turnaroundin the fl ow process
01/2014 INSIDER 19
Hygienic GEA Tuchenhagen pumps save energy and operation costs.
Producing goods according to modern,
sustainable standards. Finding acceptance in
the market, in society and at your production
site. Getting ready for the future. All this is
connected, in our energy-conscious era, to
responsibly controlled energy consumption.
Hygienic pumps in the GEA Tuchenhagen
portfolio fulfi ll the growing demand for
environmentally compatible equipment. The
company and its production concept are based
on the principles of economical effi ciency,
sustainability and service orientation.
ECONOMICAL – SUSTAINABLE – SERVICE ORIENTEDWith GEA Tuchenhagen®-VARIFLOW pumps manufacturers
can save considerable costs. High effi ciency motors in
thoughtfully diff erentiated sizes ensure low power intake. This
keeps energy consumption low, reducing production costs. The
pumps have been optimized to provide solutions for any and
all market requirements. The fl ow paths are exactly designed,
without dead space, for steady and gentle product conveying.
Manufacturers can thus achieve higher product quality with
lower consumption of energy, water and detergents, at eff ectively
reduced cleaning and maintenance time and staff costs.
Less energy and water consumption and less chemicals mean
less stress on the climate and the environment. In many
markets, demand from consumers and, in consequence, the
marketing success of consumer products is more and more
infl uenced by ecological seals of quality and international
norms for global climate and environment protection. Societies
are becoming more and more ecologically conscious.
Manufacturers who work with GEA Tuchenhagen components
can claim advantages in two ways: They are using components
with proven ability to make environment-friendly processes
possible. And the end products benefi t from the high standard
of hygiene and exactness of processes. In this way, sustainable
production means successful production.
Service orientation – together with economical effi ciency and
sustainability – is the third strength to make our customers
benefi t from our expertise. Customers can employ our
individual engineering support provided by valve and pump
specialists and profi t from comprehensive digital tools – from
technical drawings to interactive life cycle cost forecasts – long

Smart cleaningsaves valuesThe experience of the GEA Breconcherry team goes beyond just tank cleaning.
Breconcherry has been synonymous with high-
quality, innovative cleaning technology for 45
years. Not only our customers have delightedly
followed us from the beginning.
Our production manager, Terry Habbitts has also been with
our company for more than 40 years. We talked to him about
the success story of a remarkable company, a story that has its
beginning in the town of Ledbury. The “Fury” orbital cleaner
was developed there. Mike Robinson, the company founder
who created it, was successful in developing a unique drive
concept, one that has made the Fury the most effi cient orbital
cleaner in the market to this day. Many patents and products
have followed. The company Sellers Clean UK was acquired too.
A broad range of application possibilities helped to establish
the name Breconcherry in a great number of industries – the
brewery, beverage, dairy and food industries and all other
industries where tanks and containers need cleaning.
For the development of its most recent product series, Breconcherry
has placed a special focus on meeting increasing customer
demands with regard to hygienic design and product quality.
From the fi rst day of sale, the newly developed rotating and
orbital cleaners were met with admiration thanks to their
stunning cleaning results and excellent effi ciency. Thus it was
a short step to selecting powerful names for these products,
such as Twister, Typhoon, Tempest or Turbo SSB. Eventually
those exact products found interest from the Business Unit
GEA Flow Components, leading to a fusion that created the
GEA Breconcherry brand and retired the old VARIPURE
brand. Today, GEA Breconcherry off ers an extensive product
portfolio of cleaning devices for the most diverse customer
applications.
“In contrast to the 'classic' system component business,
cleaning technology relies less on large scale projects to
generate sales. That's why we need broader access to diff erent
markets as a part of our sales concepts. New distributors and
synergies within the GEA Group are as important to us as
Our focus is on the economic
and ecologic objective to
reduce the consumption of

We are achieving that goal with
hygienic design and the right

The general principle of our orbital cleaners:
The round jet nozzles rotate in two planes and
produce focused high impact jets generating a
highly efficient 3D wash pattern.
The new orbital cleaners Tornado 4 and Twister extend the
GEA Breconcherry portfolio of optimum cleaning solutions.
As with Typhoon, Tempest and two-nozzle Tornado, the four-
nozzle Tornado 4 and the Twister are liquid driven and work
at pressures between 4 and up to 10 bar.

INfo | CLOSE TO US
Our affiliate company GEA Tuchenhagen North America shines with refreshed brillianceat its new address in Portland Maine, McAllister Farm Road.
Some “farm” –our new headquarters for North America
01/2014 INSIDER 37
The original office on Evergreen Road was occupied at the start
of 2004, but in the end the capacities were not conducive for
expanding and creating additional workspaces.
In 2013, David Medlar, president of GEA Tuchenhagen North
America, and his team were able to relocate to a larger offi ce
space on McAllister Farm Road. Today the Sales Support and
Finance/Accounting departments can be found in the new
space, while the previous location has been designated as the
‘Service Center’ and is the company's warehouse, not only for
spares but also for specialist assembly and test operations. It is
also the home for exhibits to support US marketing, sales and
training needs.
The new location allows the team to work comfortably
and also have space to grow with more staff as required.
More importantly, there is fi nally a (long desired) training/
presentation room for customers.
It's only mildly ironic that the older offi ce does look like a
farmhouse but it’s the newer, modern offi ce that carries the
address McAllister Farm Road. u

Debut in Munich:The new Business Unit at drinktec
With its 1,445 exhibitors coming from 77 countries and with
an attendance of 67,000 visitors from 183 countries, drinktec
is known as the worldwide leading exhibition for the beverage
and liquid food industries. Size, diversity and internationality
all place drinktec at the center of the world market. So it
was given top preference to present the new Business Unit
GEA Flow Components with its new structure of four Business
Lines: Hygienic Valve Technology, Hygienic Pump Technology
(GEA Tuchenhagen), Aseptic Valve Technology (GEA Aseptomag)
und Cleaning Technology (GEA Breconcherry).
This year the focus was set on new components and systems
from the new Business Unit: One highlight was the butterfly
valves T-smart 7 series, very special for the new sealing design,
In the fall of 2013 the Business Unit GEA Flow Components introduced its new structure at the drinktec in Munich.

which meets the ever-increasing requirements placed on
components in process plants worldwide. The double-sided
valve disk bearing for defined seal compression and the
ideal design of the product area enable that wear is low and
the product is handled gently. Another innovation that was
greeted with enthusiasm was the VARICOVER® product
recovery system, being the first to be certified according to
the new 3A sanitary standard 101-00, certificate no. 1724.
The system is used in the US beverage, food and pharmaceutical
industries. Product Recovery Systems are used for the
recovery of valuable products from pipe systems.
Apart from these components, we gained attention with the
new 24/7 PMO Valve® 2.0, allowing non-stop production
according to the PMO regulation. Keeping all the known
advantages of the existing type, the 2.0 version has been
designed considerably more compact – resulting in using less
space in the process line and increasing its efficiency while
reducing costs. And without any compromise to given safety
standards.
GEA Aseptomag presented in Munich the sterile double
chamber valve, and the new IBC filling module, a fully aseptic
stand-alone unit for filling and emptying industrial bulk
containers of 200 up to 1,600 l.
The entire Business Unit will be happy to meet you at
forthcoming events with new highlights! u
