PRINT AND WEB // REWRITTEN BRIEF
THE BRIEFInterpret the content of the Victorian novella Flatlander by Edwin A. Abbott for display at a modern exhibition and produce a credible pitch to send to potential public venues in London. The exhibition will aim to allow visitors to interact with the content of the book in different ways, using images and typogra-phy to make the concepts raised in flatlander as accessible as possible.
CONSIDERATIONSMethods of storytelling have changed dramatically since 1884. Make use of modern forms of production, delivery and interaction.
PRIMARY AUDIENCEMuseum goers aged 30+ Educated and web savvy, with a light interest in science
SECONDARY AUDIENCEMuseums and exhibtions attract a diverse audience who might be drawn to attend. This could include families and the elderly.
TONE OF VOICESerious and challenging, but simple enough to be digested by the wide audience that visit the museum. The graphic products should use the supplement the light tone of Abbott, but supplement this with simple diagrams.
BACKGROUNDFlatlander is a story about a 2D world full of geometric shapes structured into a society. It was written as a critique of Abbott's Victorian society. It was not successful on its release, but rose to fame after Ein-stein's work introduced the concept of the 4th dimension. The work has been adapted in many ways, and even became a feature film in 2007.
MANDATORY REQUIREMENTSThe range of outcomes must span both print and web. Outcomes must incorporate typography in a considered way.

DESIGNING THE SPACEI knew that to have the control I wanted over how the content of the book was repre-sented, I needed to design the physical space it would be contained in. Splitting the book into broad sequencial events rather than chapters, I was able to develop a structure that would lead visitors through the story in a simplified way.

As there is neither sun with us, nor any light of such a kind as to make shadows, we have none of the helps to the sight that you have in Spaceland.
If our friend comes closer to us we see his line becomes larger; if he leaves us it becomes smaller; but still he looks like a straight line; be he a Triangle, Square, Pentagon, Hexagon, Circle, what you will — a straight Line he looks and nothing else.
