Module Code Module TitleOUGD303 Final Major Project

REVISED POSITION STATEMENT AND RATIONALE
Over the course of this final module I aim to produce a well-presented body of work that effectivelydemonstrates both my ambitions and interests as a designer. Up until now many of my design solutionshave been print-based, and to a certain extent I would like to use this module to change this and beginworking more towards screen-based solutions.
I feel that beginning to follow this direction will enable me to create innovative products that both keep meengaged as a designer and also allow me to demonstrate a broad range of skills and techniques, which i
turn will be helpful in terms of putting together an effective portfolio.
THEMES / SUBJECTS
What Themes/Subjects will form the basis of yourwork for the final major project? This should includeTheoretical and non design based content andconcerns.
GENERAL THEMES:
Throughout this final module, I intend to focus mainly othree particular areas which interest me either in directrelation to graphic design or otherwise. These are:
Music
Moving Image
Hand-drawn lettering
The majority of the briefs I will be undertaking stem fromone or more of these main areas, for example a comicbook collaboration will involve lettering, and potentiallysome moving image, and a record label proposal couldpotentially involve all three. In some ways I am aiming tcreate outcomes which make an attempt to stray awayfrom the obvious products and ideas that have emergefrom some of my previous projects in favor of far moreinnovative and skill-driven approaches.
SPECIFIC SUBJECTS:
Comic book lettering
Club night proposal (Garage competition) Record label branding, plus research into how
turn this into a live brief. Moving image channel 4 idents
hand-drawn signs/posters
web design Traxsource
wallpaper design.

DESIGN CONTEXT
Identify areas of professional/creative practices that will inform thecontextualization of the work that you produce. Thisshould include specific designers, studios, practitioners and products as well as broadercreative disciplines and methods of Production /Distribution.
DESIGNERS/STUDIOS:
Nicholas Garland:Part of the inspiration behind the comic bookcollaboration with Mitchell. Particularly looking atsome of his woodblock prints and drawings, whichhave a very dark and moody feel to them.
Sean McCabe:
A designer focussing heavily on black and whitehand-drawn typographic solutions, which aremeticulously detailed. I have been observing hiswork for some time now and would like achieve asimilar level of detail in my own drawings andsolutions.
There was also one particular web design firmbased in Leeds which I currently forget the name oand forgot to bookmark. However I am on the casand should hopefully have found the name of itagain very soon. Their homepage was perhaps on
of the best webpages I have ever seen and this is good part of the inspiration behind wanting to creadigital interactive design.
AUDIENCE/CONTEXTS:
Anyone with some sort of interest in comic
book artwork , lettering etc. Those with an interest in various different
genres of electronic music, both DJ's andgeneral listeners who may or may not attenvarious club nights.
Those who regularly tune in to any on ofchannel 4's various different channels (C4D&AD brief)
Places where solutions might be more
effective/enjoyable if said solutions were thresult of detailed hand-rendered letteringwork. I'm thinking hipster bistros and vintagmarket stalls.
Downloaders of legal copies of undergroun
electronic music, who might use Traxsourcevery now and again for the odd purchase
Fans of good quality wallpaper.
Production/Distribution methods:
Screen-print
Hand-drawn type
Identity design
Packaging design
Moving Image work
Web Design + some potential coding
Commercial Print

DESIGN DISCIPLINES
What areas of graphic design practice do you intend toinvestigate in relation to the practical and conceptualproduction / distribution of work in response to selectedbriefs
During this module I intend to spend a significant amouof time investigating new techniques and processesinvolved in both web design and moving image work. What I learn from doing this can be directly applied tonearly all of the briefs I am undertaking, which in the lorun will promote to potential employers versatility andconfidence in a wide range of disciplines. Alongside thisof course I will be aiming to learn how to improve mydrawing skills and ways of translating this to digitalwithout losing too much of the tactile nature of theoriginal work. This means I will have to fully get to grips
with using a graphics tablet, and further improve mygeneral Adobe skills. In terms of distribution, I will haveto gain the confidence to fully promote me and my workin order to achieve what I would like to achieve in thefuture. This means spending some time focussing oncreating promotional packages and more effectivepresentation materials.
DESIGN SKILLS
What practical design skills do you intend to furtherdevelop and apply during your final major project. Whatdo you intend to use the skills for. Consider extending theuse of skills that you already have in order to deliver workof a professional standard as well as identifying new skillsthat you will need to develop.
I will have to spend some time every day improving mydrawing skills and applying this to many aspects of mydesign practice, as it is this kind of aesthetic that I woullike to be most prominent in my final outcomes.Previously I have not felt like I have had the confidenceto do this but it seems obvious that I should at least try,
as this is the only way of creating the most effectiveoutcomes (of course this is dependent on the context bthere is room for this in nearly all of my selected briefs)
I will also have to develop my DreamWeaver skills to asignificant level - although we have touched upon thisbefore I failed to continue developing these skills. Thesare techniques that will of course become more andmore significant as time goes on, and should to a certadegree improve my chances of employment later on.
I aim to use AfterEffects at certain times throughout thismodule, whether it is required or would simply beanother appropriate outcome for a particular brief. I feeas though my skills with this piece of software are at afairly good level already, so I must work on efficiency wmy current techniques rather than actively seeking tolearn new ones.
PROPOSED BRIEFS
List any briefs that you have already identified as possiblestarting points for your Final Major Project. You shouldinclude possible competition and Live briefs as well asidentifying briefs that will allow you to develop asignificant body of research and development in relationto your stated Themes/subjects, Design disciplines andproduction / distribution methods
1 Comic artwork/lettering (collaboration with Mitch)2 - Club night proposal a competition held by TheGarage, a new-ish club in Leeds.3 Record Label proposal4 4Seven idents (D&AD comp. Brief)5 A series of re-brands6 Wallpaper designs7 Traxsource website re-design
These are seven significant briefs which I have chosento undertake, although if time permits I would like to
spend time vastly improving the work I do for variousnights mainly based in York, and turning one or more othese into a proper identity design brief.
KEY TEXTS.
List a selected number of books, articles and texts thatare central o your proposed area of practice. Theseshould include a combination of design and non-designbased books, theoretical texts as well as visualpublications.
Graphic Design: A User's Manual -Adrian ShaughnessThis book contains a lot of essays that cover a widerange of topics across the field of design and is alwaysuseful as a starting point for further reading.
