From the Principal’s Desk…………... Welcome to Term 4 Week 7 at Kilmore Primary School. Another week gone and we are over the half way mark for this term! As a staff we are reflecting on the achievements of the year and setting up priorities and targets for 2018! It has been a very busy year and I am pleased to say that we have achieved most of what was in our Annual Implementation Plan for this year. The last of our opinion survey data arrived last week. It was the staff Opinion Survey this time. I am pleased to say that our results were extremely satisfying with our results being above state benchmark in most elements. I thank our staff for their commitment to our students, the community and each other. Our Foundation Transition Program starts next Tuesday. This is a really exciting day where we get to meet our Foundation students for next year. We will have a morning tea and information session for the parents between 9 and 11am. If you would like to come and help introduce our new families to KPS please feel free to join us. Class groups will be finalised in the next week or two so if you have any thing you would like us to consider when making these plans please put them in writing and send them in no later than Friday November 24
th .
Enjoy the great weather!

KILMORE PRIMARY SCHOOL
SUNSMART POLICY 2017
Rationale Too much of the sun’s UV can cause sunburn, skin and eye damage and skin cancer. UV damage accumulated during childhood and adolescence is strongly associated with an increased risk of skin cancer in later life. Aims
This SunSmart Policy has been developed to:
Ensure all students and staff get some UV for vitamin D.
Encourage the entire school community to use a combination of sun protection measures
whenever UV Index Levels reach three and above to minimise skin and eye damage and skin
cancer risk.
Work towards a safe school environment that provides shade for students, staff and the school
community at appropriate times.
Assist students to be responsible for their own sun protection.
Ensure that families and new staff are informed of the school’s SunSmart Policy.
Staff are encouraged to access the sun protection times at sunsmart.com.au to assist with the implementation of this policy. The sun protection times are a forecast from the Bureau of Meteorology for the time of day UV levels are forecast to reach 3 or higher. At these levels, sun protection is recommended for all skin types. In Victoria, UV levels regularly reach 3 or higher from mid-August to the end of April.
Sun protection is used from mid-August to the end of April or whenever UV levels reach three
or more.
Guidelines
1. Shade
A shade audit is conducted regularly to determine the current availability and quality of shade.
The school council makes sure there is a sufficient number of shelters and trees providing
shade in the school grounds particularly in areas where students congregate e.g. outdoor
lesson areas and popular play areas.
The availability of shade is considered when planning excursions and all other outdoor activities.
Wherever practical, shade is sort during excursions & incursions.
In consultation with the school council, shade provision is considered in plans for future
buildings and grounds.
Students are encouraged to use available areas of shade when outside. Students who do not
have appropriate hats or outdoor clothing are asked to play in the shade or a suitable area
protected from the sun.
2. Clothing
Sun protective clothing is included in our school uniform / dress code and sports uniform.
School clothing is cool, loose fitting and made of densely woven fabric. It includes shirts with
collars and longer sleeves, longer style dresses and shorts and rash vests or t-shirts for outdoor
swimming.
3. Hats
All students and staff are required to wear hats that protect their face, neck and ears, i.e.
legionnaire, broad brimmed or bucket hats, whenever they are outside. Baseball or peak caps
are not considered a suitable alternative.
Students are to keep their hats in their schoolbags throughout the year for days when the UV
rating is high.
4. Sunscreen
Students must provide their own SPF 30 (or higher) + broad spectrum, water resistant
sunscreen. This is included on the school’s booklist each year.
Teachers may apply sunscreen to very young or disabled students if necessary, and if parental
approval is provided. Strategies are in place to remind students to apply sunscreen before
going outdoors.
Sunscreen is applied at least 20 minutes before going outdoors and reapplied every two hours
if outdoors.
Strategies are in place to remind students to apply sunscreen before going outdoors e.g.
reminder notices, sunscreen monitors, sunscreen buddies.
Staff OHS and Role Modelling
As part of OHS UV risk controls and role-modelling, when the UV is three and above staff:
Wear sun protective hats and clothing when outside.
Apply SPF 30+ broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen.
Seek shade whenever possible.
Families and visitors are encouraged to use a combination of sun protection measures (sun
protective clothing and hats, sunglasses, sunscreen and shade) when participating in and
attending outdoor school activities.
Curriculum
Programs on skin cancer prevention and vitamin D are included in the curriculum for all year
levels.
SunSmart behaviour is regularly reinforced and promoted to the whole school community
through newsletters, school homepage, parent meetings, staff meetings, school assemblies,
and student and teacher activities and on student enrolment.
Review
The school council and staff regularly monitor and review the effectiveness of the SunSmart
Policy (at least once every three years) and revise the policy when required.
Our school will maintain membership as a Sunsmart school by the Cancer Council of Victoria.
This policy will be reviewed as part of the policy review cycle. This policy was last ratified by School Council 2017
When: Friday 24th November from 9.00am
Where: Spanish room (off the stadium)
Thank you to Helen, Catherine and Rachel for helping cover our new books last Friday.
We still have lots to go with a new delivery arriving this week. If you have a spare hour or two this Friday 24
th November please come and join us in the Spanish room – no experience required.
Morning tea will be provided and it is a great opportunity to meet other members of our school community for a chat. No previous experience necessary. As the saying goes – ‘More hands make light work.
Football Football is as hard as a rock, kick high down at Kardinia Park. The stadium roars through all the night, we fight for the ball down at nightfall sweating hard, so so hard. Jordan 2W
Hello everyone! Another week has flown by already. This week has been very lucrative on the food front – two apples, some cheese dip and almost a slice of pizza. If it’s on the floor, I think it must be for me. Appawrently, this isn’t the case.
Did you see me channelling my inner super hero last week? I transformed into Super Dog for a bit of fun. Super Dennis (who looked a lot like Miss Dennis) made a cape for me.
Have you noticed lots of new blue bins in classrooms and offices? They’re our recycling bins from Bell’s Bin Hire. We can help the environment by recycling all of our cardboard and paper. My Grade 6 friends have written BBH a thank you card on behalf of all of us.
Hope to see you at the Passion Project
Presentations on Friday. If I did a Passion
Project it would be on food, or sleeping….
