dealerTed Johns, owner of Jerome's in FortWilliam, Ontario, advises that JuneHill, who is in charge of the recorddepartment is temporarily on a leaveof absence having just become theproud mother of a bouncing baby boy."Lady Godiva" and "Stop Stop" arebig sellers in the lakehead. "GoodVibrations" and Donovan's "Yellow"are also moving well. The Arbors"Symphony" and Williams' "BornFree' are keeping pace with Simon &Garfunkle's "Winter". Best selling LPis The Monkees.

"Winchester Cathedral" isstill hanging on to top spot at Sayer'sin Islington, Ontario. Joan Ziegler alsolists "96 Tears", Ryder's "Dress"and "Psychotic Reaction" up with thewinners. "Yellow", Nancy Sinatra's"Sugar Town" and "Mame" are show-ing good potential. The Standells' arealso chalking up sales with their "WhyPick On Me". Top of the album heapbelongs to The Monkees. Sayer's areopening a new store in Don Mills nextweek.

Paul Misener reports goodaction on The Hollies' "Stop", BeachBoys "Vibrations" and DC5's "19Days". Ryder's "Dress' and "Win-chester Cathedral" are also sellingwell. Nancy's "Sugar Town", Deeand The Yeomen and the Guess Whoare moving well. Paul notes that theUgly Ducklings are really happeningwith their single "Just In Case" andadds "it is selling better than a lotof the records in the top '50', whichindicates the start of a hard core offans the same type that means everyBeatle and Presley record is a hit."Paul would also like to see Capitolrelease the Duck's album.

Vicki Paige's Richmond Hillbar is listing "Godiva" and Ryder's"Dress" as top sellers. "19 Days"and "Reaction" are also showing well.Dorsey's "Holy Cow" and Sledge's"It Tears Me Up" are keeping the R&Bfans happy. "Place In The Sun" andSimon & Garfunkle's "Winter" are be-ginning to happen. "Dr. Zhivago""The Monkees", "Best Of Peter &Gordon", "Spin Out" and "The Ex-citing Wilson Pickett" are top sellingalbums.(Ed: It has been suggested by many of the re-cord store owners that record salesmen shouldbe allowed to contribute to the "Dealer" col-umn. So, if any enterprising salesman would liketo drop a line to RPM, we would be most in-terested in his comments and opinions.)

KCKent Chauvin, who is busy working on his thesis on radio station advertising at the University of British Columbia, sends news from Vancouver that the big song in his town right now is"Winchester Cathedral" by the New VaudevilleBand. The cover by Dana Rollins is also ex-periencing quite a bit of air play. Kent notesthat apparently the Fontana people in Englandwere in a bit of a fix when their version startedto happen. Reports have it that they didn't havea band name of New Vaudeville. The side wascut by a studio group. So they had to come upwith a group, poste haste. Other discs makingthe charts are "Good Vibrations" by the BeachBoys, "You Keep Me Hanging On" by TheSupremes and Janis Ian's "Society Child". Be-tween the two Vancouver top 40 stations (weekof Nov. 20) there were only two Canadian discslisted. Lightfoot's "Spin" and "Bound To Fly"by 3's A Crowd. CFUN is still playing its "AllCanadian Top Ten" every Saturday morningfrom 11AM to noon. Well .known newsman AlixYoung i s quitting CJOR to do a bit of free lan-cing. South African Peter Star takes over the6 to 9 PM slot at CKLG.

Chuck Benson leaves CFRN in Edmon-ton to take up duties as sales and promotionmanager at his old haunt of CKYL in PeaceRiver. Before leaving Edmonton, Chuck sentalong news on the latest efforts of CFRN and

'the Association of Canadian Traveller's to pro-

mote their Twentieth Annual "Search For Tal-ent'''. The proceeds from this increasingly pop-ular show go to the Northern Alberta CrippledChildren's Fund. Because of the efforts of theACT, Alberta now has a Council for CrippledChildren and Adults. They were also instrumen-tal in bringing about the development of a pro-vince -wide Easter Seal structure and the con-struction of the Crippled Children's Camp atLake Isle.

Bill Opdahl, known on the air as DougWilliams, notes that CJKL's "District Club",heard on Saturdays is getting more popular bythe year. This is the fourth year for the show, and the first year that memberships have beenoffered. They receive an average of 300 lettersper week and now boast a membership of over1300. Bill Cote is president of the "Club" andbegins his request show at 1:10 PM and be-

cause of the enormity of requests, the showgoes right through until 10 PM with DougWilliams hosting the end of the request show.

Graham Wyllie received a record from alistener who wrote that it was a smash in theprovince of Quebec. Graham gave it a spin and

because of the simple lyrics he was able to

put his high school French to work and found.he could pick up the meaning of the disc. Thename of the disc was "La Poupee Qui FaitNon" by Les Sultans (RPM 80). He also playedit for his listeners and the response was en-couraging. Graham writes "Since Quebec has alocal thriving industry and is turning out firstclass efforts (certainly better than the majorityof English Canadian records) and since we are

heading into our Centennial, celebrating 100years of bi-cultural existence, it might be aninteresting project for Quebec based recordoutfits to supply all Canadian stations withtheir products. This might be a good way tobring the teens of the two cultures closer."

Wayne Barry of CKOK Penticton, was soexcited over the New Syndrome single of MikeCampbell's that he could hardly wait to dropus a line to make sure we let the whole worldknow that "Remorse" and "One Girl" is oneof the greatest sounds ever to come out of Can-ada. This Vancouver session came about be-cause of the popularity of Campbell when heappeared throughout the province with the

"Music Hop Review". The Serendipity Singerswere in town for a show at the Peach Bowl andgathered quite an impressive audience aboutthem. CKOK previewed their new disc of "Au-tumn Bound" which has great teen appeal andthe flip "Born Free", a bluesy ballad. TheMarch Of Dimes promotion has rolled aroundonce again and CKOK are getting ready to toptheir efforts of last year when they won theradio station award for the largest amount

collected.Scott Alexander writes from CKPT in

Peterboro, that the newest thing to hit the areaare the ."Pussycat Commandos". This is a

type of fan club with the purpose of adopting aa needy child through the foster parents plan.Scott is General of the group.

Jonah Kelly, announcer operator withCFFB Frobisher Bay NWT, became the firstEskimo language brdadcaster to cover the ses-sions of the Northwest Territorial Council. TheCouncil has three elected members who speakEskimo, and one appointed member speakingthe language. Until this year, all the news re-ports came out in English, leaving the listen-ers who speak Eskimo only, out in the cold.Reports were prepared in Resolute Bay, 500

miles north of the Arctic Circle, were flown toCFFB in Frobisher Bay, then sent south in edi-ted form for rebroadcast over the CBC's North-ern Shortwave Service. Jacques Bernier, form-erly of Ville de Laval, is spinning French lan-guage disques for a tri-lingual audience on

Baffin Island. The big problem is building up abacklog of popular 45's to fill the expanded

time being allotted to French Music.Les McLaughlin signs in from CFWH,

Whitehorse in the Yukon, with news that AlOster, Northern Balladeer, who has severalsingles and four LPs out on the Klondike label, and Hank Karr, local night club entertainer, have

been booked with four other pieces to appearat Expo '67. Hank Karr and the Yukon Starshave been performing in the Whitehorse areafor 18 months and along with Al Oster as spe-cial guest, appeared on a 13 week radio seriesproduced at CFWH Whitehorse and was heardthroughout Canada's north and overseas throughthe facilities of the CBC's Northern and ArmedForces Services. The show, "Northern Jam-boree", was largely responsible for the Expoopportunity. Les suggests that if you're lookingfor Canadian talent, give a listen to Al Oster's"North Country Compositions" sung by him-self on the Klondike label.

Ed: tells me there has been quite a bit of criti-cism of my column from the western part ofCanada. I would like to state right now, that I

have practically forgotten the terrible letters I

used to get from B.C., and I feel that presentlythere is a great deal that can be said about themove ahead action in Vancouver. I must quicklyadd that there is a slight lack of public rela-tions between the far west and eastern Canada, but I guess they can afford to be a little bitindependent since they are setting this countryon fire with their Canadian enthusiasm. It's toobad Peggy Keenan has left the west coast. Atleast she dropped a line to RPM about the ac-tivities of Vancouver and even included newsevents of the competitive station.

It has been brought to my attention thatan eastern Ontario disc jockey's chart is rig-;ed to list acts that are going to play the area, and guess who the dance promoter is?????)

People are talking about the very

iervous personal manager who is fussing like aiother....hen about his groups latest releaseThen there is nothing to worry about. The re-ord was assured of a lot of airplay before it/as released and you can take my word that it(ill be a HIT!!!!!

Practically the same people are talkingbout the "tortoise chart" that has become a'callous hare" and why they are suddenly rac-ng with the hits. Whatever happened to the'tight list theory" that everybody treats as aeligion. "Loose list" is an illiteration. I liket better.

Disc jockeys and visitors to HogtownRtter make it a point to get a two sided storyin what is happening in HT before they leave.they may find out someday that their namesire being tossed around Toronto like a very-10T football, and none of this will be to theiradvantage. (Ed: You're in good shape today,Miss. C.)

There is a very popular rumour aroundthat Canada's "busiest" production house willcall it "quits" at the end of this year. (I only

'print what I hear.) I broke this story in thiscolumn some weeks ago. and I intend to be thefirst with the official news on this event.

PENELOPE PENTELOPE???? nonnow, who are you kidding? This is a phony

name if I ever heard one. This "cowlady' is

going to be writing the "cowboy" column???I can tell you if she keeps using those "cow"expressions, she won't be very popular withthe "country- crowd. (Ed: Take a look at yourfirst column my dear. You weren't exactlyUNSQUARE!!!!!)

While the grapevine might have buzzedin TO town about two weeks ago, it SHUT tight

as a clam. Wha"appen???? Even my best spiesare a little confused and we may have to resortto wire tapping (or something!!!!()

The group scene in Toronto is turningout to be a game of "MUSICAL (tee hee hee)CHAIRS" (Ed: How clever!!!) and you justdon't know where some groups are, these days. There is talk of a couple of the better knowngroups just about ready to FORGET IT!!!!

The "SCENE" in a bookers office acouple of weeks ago was something for thefilms (according to my spies) and the resultslooked damaging, but here we go again.

continued from page 3Newfoundland, would like radio stations to sendthem Merry Christmas Kudos. CFCB will re-spond in kind.

"The World At 6" is CBC radio's firsthalf-hour news program on a daily basis. Theshow made its debut on the CBC radio networkOctober 31 (Monday) at 6:00 PM. It is airedfive times each night (Monday to Friday) withthe use of closed-circuit broadcast lines. "TheWorld At 6" is heard live in all of Canada'stime zones at 6 to 6:30 PM regional time. Ex-ecutive producer is Angus McLellan. BillMurphy is the supervising editor and assign-ment editor is Lloyd Bulmer. Regular on -airreporters include Michael Maclear (London),James M. Minifie and Knowlton Nash (Washing-ton), Tom Leach (01taWa),TIm Ralfe (Saigon),David Levy (Moscow), David Halton (Paris),and newly appointed national reporters, PaddyGregg (Halifax), Alan Yates (Montreal), RonChester (Winnipeg), Stan Rantin (Toronto), andSheldon Turcotte (Vancouver). Four well knownCBC announcers are assigned to the program.John O'Leary, Bruce Rogers, Bob Willson andJim Chorley. Two of these announcers are usedin each of the half hours. One as news announ-cer the other as host. The program maintainsthe usual high level of reporting of the CBC butin addition, the reporters do go into the newsin depth and report on more of the interestinghappenings of a news report.

Keith Elshaw, host of the CFOR "A -Go -Go" show, sends news that the Great LakesBroadcasting System (CFOR-Orillia, CHYM-

Kitchener and CFCO-Chatham) and Toronto'sStitch In Tyme are attempting to have the downside of "I Hear Trumpets Blow" by The Tokens,"Don't Cry, Sing Along With The Music", re-leased as a single. They feel it could becomea biggy. Listener response has been very en-couraging.

Bob Capp, formerly with CKSL London,Ontario, makes the giant move to VOCM, Chan-nel 69, in St. John's, Newfoundland.

Denis Menard notes that CKBC is cele-brating the first anniversary of their "Top 40Playlist". With their increase to 10,000 wattsand with a fairly heavy populated area, theydecided, one year ago, that as an added ser-vice to the trade, listeners and distributors, they would instigate their now popular chartwhich is compiled from requests and sales re-ported to the station.

The folks from Brockville, who havehad much success with their Tiki Club, are nowmoving into the Belleville area and alreadyhave under construction, a forty thousand dol-lar teen night club on the same lines as theirBrockville operation. Dave Charles, the voice

of the Quinte Teens, advises that this clubwill maintain a policy of spotlighting only thebest in Canadian talent. It will be a six dayoperation. There will be a room for those

over 18 and one for the teenyboppers. Snackbar. cosy chairs and tables plus a penny ar-cade with pool tables and slot games.

Howdy, Howdy, Howdy. A rather nice memofrom Cousin Ed: came to me this week, andwith a lot of tact he tried to tell me that I

shouldn't use the words cowboy, and any of therange terms in my column. He says he wouldprefer that I call cowboy music "COUNTRYMUSIC" which is the new fangled term for justplain folk music. I don't think it matters noneas long as the music we are talking about isdone well.

Miss Ellie Capreese sends along a notethat said, "Welcome my dear to the fold ofRPM writers. I hope you have a very hard shell. You will be called practically everything in theworld now that you have entered the REAL old-est profession in the world." (Ed: I think Miss. C.,meant journalism.) But I'll do my best to be-come as well known and respected as Ellie.(Ed: At least as well known!!!!)

big Slim, The Lone Cowboy was an alltime favourite of WWVA "Jamboree" and was apopular country figure in Canada. Scotty Gibbs,of Frontier Records in Waterloo, Quebec, ad-vises of the sad passing of this 65 year oldcountry great who was responsible for gettingmany of the country stars on their way to suc-

cess. Among these were Hank Snow, who wasbrought from Canada by Big Slim, to perform onWWVA, and the late Hawkshaw Hawkins. BigSlim used to come into Canada quite regularlyplaying dates for Gibbs and Jimmy James andmade several appearances on CHLT-TV inSherbrooke. The last time he was in Canadawas early this year and always being on thelookout to give a helping hand to country hope-fuls, telephoned Scotty and told him that he hadjust discovered a female country singer andsongwriter who could write the best countrymaterial of any female writer he new. Big Slimstarted in radio in 1919. He recorded for DeccaRecords. His name was Harry C. Aliff and heleaves 3 sons and a daughter. He was buriedin Wheeling, West Virginia.

Cousin Hal Sproule, the country spinnerfor CFAB-CKEN-CKAD in the Maritimes reportsthat live country music shows of AnnapolisValley Radio, Kentville, have been making sev-eral appearances on the road in the AnnapolisValley area. Each Friday the "Midday Hoe-down", "Country Matinee" and "Hal's Cor-

ral" originate live from the Zellers store inKentville. Before this, "Bob's Bandwagon" aSaturday morning feature originated from thepopular auto centre of McCarthy Motors in

Windsor. When the new Rodeo Room at Green-wood opened for business, Hal Sproule emceeda two hour program of live and recorded music,Carol Isaac, Rodeo recording artist, was hisguest star.
