Caring for Our Employees, the Community and the Environment

Our commitment as a socially responsible company means that we operate our facilities in a manner that protects people and the environment and preserves our world for future generations. We are committed to continuous improvement in safety, environmental performance, reliability and open communication. The Ottawa Plant uses clean technology to produce our products while generating sodium chloride (NaCl) – table salt, road deicer – as our only routine process waste.

Safety PerformanceCristal Metals, through computer-based training and live demonstrations, continues to exceed expectations in employee safety and emergency response. Cristal Metals has culturally embraced the occupational safety principals to make sure employees, contractors and visitors remain injury free. Personal safety is a core value of all employees.

PreventionCristal Metals has completed comprehensive Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) on all of its processes to ensure adequate safeguards are put in place. The facility has installed multiple safety systems, such as smoke detection, air monitoring, foam and fire protection systems to control the possible hazards associated with the process. Cristal Metals has brought on additional expertise from across the Cristal family of companies to assist with the safe start-up of the facility. The facility has also participated in internal and external audits that included industry experts in environmental compliance, emergency response, process safety, security and our raw materials suppliers before bringing raw materials on-site.

EnvironmentalCristal Metals continues to operate in full compliance with the air, water and waste permits issued to them by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Site employees continue to push for opportunities to either eliminate or minimize waste and decrease the impact on the environment.

Emergency PreparednessCristal Metals has provided over 40 hours of emergency response training to all of its employees to ensure they are properly prepared to respond to any emergency that might occur at the facility. The facility has also reached out to the local response organizations such as the Ottawa Fire and Police Departments to ensure they are

aware of the emergency operations at the facility.
