the past year has been another of growth and maturation of the organization. over my five years as ceo we have steadily built a professional organization able to represent the city of ottawa on the international stage. recently, i had the pleasure of representing the ocmS in New york city at the international Society of the Performing arts, as one of 450 participants from 50 countries and as the only representative from ottawa.

heartfelt thanks to our colleague, artistic director roman borys, who works tirelessly to engage the finest and bright-est artists from ottawa, across canada, and around the world. his imagination and inventiveness put ocmS in the running for the Premier’s award again this year and earned the designation of a festival of distinction.

we continued long-standing friendships and established new ones this year. i’m thinking of the vital and steady engagement from our supportive donors and sponsors and from the department of canadian heritage, the Province of ontario, and the city of ottawa. an exciting new partner-ship blossomed with the leading Note foundation through our spring youth arts residency and we’re excited to have begun a collaboration with the National gallery of canada, offering a new dimension to the festival.

terence macdonald deserves special commendation along with the staff and board of dominion-chalmers united church. the church is our anchor and home base each year for the festival and throughout the concert Series.

working with all the artists, our staff, and board to bring over 100 concerts and events to our community is only half of the equation. the essential component—the “magic,” if you will—happens when the audience fills the hall. thus begins the indefinable joy and happiness of another bril-liant, and life-changing, musical experience.

au cours de la dernière année, l’organisation s’est encore développée et a encore pris de la maturité. durant mes cinq années au poste de directeur exécutif, j’ai constam-ment travaillé à la création d’une organisation profession-nelle capable de représenter la Ville d’ottawa sur la scène internationale. récemment, j’ai eu le plaisir de représenter la Smco à New york à l’international Society of the Per-forming arts. J’étais l’un des 450 participants de 50 pays, et le seul représentant d’ottawa.

Je remercie du fond du cœur notre collègue, le directeur artistique roman borys, qui travaille sans relâche pour dénicher les meilleurs artistes d’ottawa, du canada et du monde. Son imagination et son esprit inventif ont permis à la Smco d’être nominée pour le Prix du premier ministre encore une fois cette année et de se hisser au rang de « festival of distinction ».

Nous avons entretenu des amitiés de longue date et en avons tissé de nouvelles cette année. Je fais référence à l’engagement continu et vital des donateurs et des com-manditaires qui nous appuient et au soutien du ministère du Patrimoine canadien, de la province de l’ontario et de la Ville d’ottawa. un nouveau partenariat excitant est né avec la fondation leading Note grâce au youth arts residency du printemps, et nous sommes impatients de collaborer avec le musée des beaux-arts du canada, qui offrira une nouvelle dimension au festival.

breaking from our tradition of the separately-ticket-ed, reserved-seating gala, this year’s opening night performance with the Canadian brass was a pass-holder/general admission event that drew capacity crowds to dominion-chalmers united church. the spectacle also attracted considerable media atten-tion that introduced chamberfest to new audiences and sustained record attendance levels through the full two weeks’ festivities.

with the addition of a fourth fundraising concert, our festival gala series accounted for a record 20 percent of total festival revenues and packed houses every night. nash ensemble of london—their 2011 chamberfest debut has been variously described as “luminous” (ottawa citizen), “incomparable” (embassy magazine), and “commanding” (toronto Star)—revisited chamberfest with a compelling programme of 19th and 20th century british works. 2012 governor general’s Performing arts awards recipient Janina Fialkowska gave a riveting chopin recital to delighted and adoring fans. louis lortie and Augustin Dumay wowed audiences with a show-stopping (literally) interpretation of frank’s Sonata in a major for Violin and Piano, then returned to the stage two days later as guests of the ever-cool Quatuor ebène.

our signature chamberfest concert series, named after one of the ottawa chamber music Society’s most generous benefactors: the late legendary music critic Jacob Siskind. this year’s nightly 7Pm lineup read like a who’s who of canadian and international talent: iconic actor Gordon pinsent; grammy-award winning baritone Gerald Finley; Juno-award winning Gryphon trio with soprano and cbc radio 2 personality Julie nesrallah; the shanghai string Quartet; british cello soloist Colin Carr; the internationally acclaimed Gesualdo Consort Amsterdam; and many more. the Siskind series alone accounted for more than 80 percent of the summer festival’s earned media.

one of last summer’s dominant artistic themes featured all 16 string quartets written by beethoven, including two free what makes it great? events by american composer and music educator Rob Kapilow, and with an accompanying 32-page booklet written by Dr. David Gardner, cultural director at carleton university’s college of the humanities. the series concluded chamberfest artistic director Roman borys’ five-year exploration of beethoven’s small ensemble and solo piano works—70 pieces in total, of which his string quartets are among the greatest works of music ever created.

2012 was an exciting year for new partnerships. arguably the most notable of these was with our august national Gallery of Canada, home to the nation’s fine art collection. we moved our free alfresco concerts to the gallery’s outdoor amphitheatre and the bulk of our afternoon programming into its comfortably air-conditioned auditorium (another welcome development, according to patron feedback). but it was our partnership programming in the permanent collection—rob kapilow’s innovative the music of Art and Scott thomson’s ethereal Chamber elements—that truly capture the public’s imagination. attendance, media attention—most of all, ocmS’ professionalism and organizational capacity—surpassed all gallery expectations, so much so that it has signalled its intent to considerably deepen our relationship in 2013.

l’année 2012 fut une année importante en ce qui a trait à l’établissement de nouveaux partenariats. le plus notable est sans aucun doute le partenariat avec l’auguste musée des beaux-arts du Canada, qui présente la collection des beaux-arts du canada. Nous avons déplacé nos concerts au frais dans l’amphithéâtre extérieur du musée, et la majeure partie de notre programmation de l’après-midi dans son auditorium climatisé (une autre initiative appréciée, selon les commentaires des clients). mais c’est notre programmation en partenariat de la collection permanente—la musique de l’art de rob kapilow et la « Chamber elements » de Scott thompson—qui ont réellement fait vibrer l’imagination du public. le nombre de participants, l’attention médiatique—et surtout le professionnalisme et la capacité organisationnelle de la Smco—ont surpassé les attentes du musée, qui a fait connaître son intention d’approfondir considérablement nos relations en 2013.

New and crossover audience engagement—an important ocmS mandate—took centre stage at the 2012 festival with chamberfringe, an expanded range of late-night cabaret programming that denis armstrong of the ottawa Sun called “a fringe festival for older fans of alternative arts.” Performances featured Richard Reed parry of arcade fire fame, jazz sensation Chet Doxas, grunge cellists samurai string squad, and the fabulously peculiar lemon bucket orkestra, whose appearance drew well over a thousand young concert-goers to Saint brigid’s for a memorable night of gypsy/klezmer/punk music.

concert serieslast season’s concert Series (the ottawa chamberfest fall/winter programme) expanded to eight performances from the previous year’s six. highlights include three sold-out new music, new places events; a festive christmas celebration with Angèle Dubeau and la pietà; young ottawa pianist suren barry’s first headlining concert; and el Sistema alumni, the simón bolívar string Quartet, in an energetic presentation of haydn, ginastera, and Schubert. Jerusalem string Quartet opened the series with a rich, full-bodied interpretation of core repertoire, and Anton Kuerti returned to ottawa with a very well-attended recital of beethoven works, featuring the much-loved appassionata Piano Sonata.

music for lifein 2012, ocmS expanded its community engagement and outreach mandate by consolidating existing and new programs under the banner, music for life. music for life is a rich collection of community service initiatives that includes:

• youth Arts Residency (march to april), a multi-day residency program that offers music coaching, performance, and mentorship by world-class chamber musicians to students of ottawa’s leading Note foundation orkidstra;

• Amateur Chamber ensemble (ACe) workshop (July to august), specifically created to celebrate and encourage adult amateur musicians through private coaching and public master classes during our summer festival;

• listen up! (September to may), a partnership with ocmS artistic advisors the gryphon trio, composer andrew Staniland, poet Jc Sulzenko, and visual artist Stephen hutchings to engage public school students in the creative processes of composition, writing, and visual art. the goal is to create a new musical work for piano trio and choir;

• Free family events such as the waterway Soundfaire, alfresco concerts, bring the kids! and our popular chamber chat series.

premier’s awards for excellence in the artsprix du premier ministre pour l’excellence artistiQue

in may, the ontario ministry of tourism, Culture and sport selected ocmS as a finalist for the 2012 Premier’s awards for excellence in the arts. the Premier’s awards recognize individual artists and arts organizations for their contributions to arts and culture in ontario. the award went to toronto’s tarragon theatre, with our heartiest congratulations. ocmS has been renominated for ministry consideration in 2013.

en mai, le ministère du tourisme, de la Culture et du sport de l’ontario a nommé la Scmo comme finaliste pour le Prix du premier ministre pour l’excellence artistique. les Prix du premier ministre reconnaissent les contributions aux arts et à la culture de l’ontario des artistes individuels et des organisations. le prix a été décerné au tarragon theatre de toronto. celebrate ontarioin 2012, ottawa chamberfest received $350,000 from Celebrate ontario as a tier 3 major recurring festival that attracts out-of-province visitors. chamberfest is now a member of the major international Festivals and events network (mifeN), along with the Shaw and Stratford festivals and the toronto international film festival.

feo top 100this year, seven ottawa-area festivals were honoured in feo’s top 100: canada day celebrations, mosaika: canada through the eyes of its People, ottawa folk festival, ottawa international chamber music festival, winterlude, td ottawa international Jazz festival, and rbc royal bank ottawa bluesfest. feo further honoured five festivals with its prestigious level of Distinction, which included ottawa chamberfest in an elite group of the most well-known and respected celebrations in the province.

le printemps dernier, Cheryl Ranacher a le reçu le tout premier Prix du bénévole de l’année de bfl canada au cours du lancement annuel de la saison du festival d’ottawa. cheryl s’est portée bénévole pour la Société de musique de chambre d’ottawa pour la première fois en 1994. durant ses deux décennies de service, elle a joué un rôle important dans la gestion de la salle, le mentorat et la formation des bénévoles, et le recrutement d’employés. Nos plus sincères remerciements aux généreux bénévoles qui ont fait en sorte que tout se déroule si bien cette année.

last spring, our own Cheryl Ranacher received the first-ever bfl canada Volunteer of the year award, during the annual launch of ottawa’s festival season. cheryl first volunteered with the ottawa chamber music Society in 1994. in her two decades of service, she has taken leadership roles in front of house management, volunteer mentoring and training, and staff recruitment. deepest thanks to all 300 generous volunteers who keep everything working so smoothly throughout the year.

legacy circle2012 marked an important step in the growth of chamberfest’s permanent endowment, with the confirmation of two planned gift commitments from new members of our legacy circle. marg Campbell, and mary and David bullock, advised chamberfest of their intentions to expand 2011’s generous bequest from the estate of ottawa citizen music critic Jacob siskind. this year, we received an additional $128,000 from the Siskind estate, which the Department of Canadian heritage supplemented with a $177,700 matching grant. funds are partially invested with the community foundation of ottawa and the ottawa festivals Sustainability fund. these generous provisions ensure a strong artistic future for the ottawa chamber music Society.

managing our budgetocmS managed its $1.9m budget in such a way that administration, marketing, and development received commensurate levels of investment as those for artistic programming and production support. these included targeted investments in broadcast advertising, public relations, and development to attract new major corporate partners. increases in corporate support were dramatic, as were increases in individual giving. community support through contributions of in-kind goods and services remained high for 2012, while government support at all levels represented 46 percent of total: a strong indicator of chamberfest’s unique role in the cultural life of the province and of canada’s national capital.

gestion du budgetla Smco gère géré son budget de 1,9 million de dollars de manière à ce que l’administration, la commercialisation et le perfection-nement bénéficient d’un niveau d’investissement proportionnel à celui des programmes artistiques et du soutien à la production. ces investissements incluent des investissements ciblés dans la publicité radiodiffusée, les relations publiques et les initiatives visant à attirer de nouvelles grandes entreprises partenaires. l’accroissement du soutien organisationnel fut spectaculaire, tout comme l’accroissement des dons individuels. le soutien communautaire par l’entremise de contributions en biens et services en nature est demeuré élevé en 2012, tandis que l’appui du gouvernement à tous les niveaux a représenté 46 % de l’appui total : un indicateur important du rôle unique que joue le chamberfest dans la vie culturelle de la province et de la capitale nationale du canada.
