APRIL 2016 VOL 3 OTOLARYNGOLOGY NEWS MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR DONALD T. DONOVAN, MD, FACS Olga Keith Wiess Professor & Chair, Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery Greetings. Many exciting events have occurred over the winter. On January 11, 2016 Houston Methodist Hospital closed the Otorhinolaryngology operating rooms in the Neurosensory Center and relocated the OTO-HNS service line to brand new space in the Houston Methodist Hospital Outpatient Center. Large spacious operating suites have been furnished with state of the art equipment, including 4 new lasers and the new MedRobtics ® flexible surgical robotic system. This new instrument recently received FDA approval and we are fortunate to be one of the first hospitals in the U.S. to have a flexible robot to treat our patients. This device will permit access to areas of the larynx and hypopharynx heretofore impossible to reach with older robotic technology. Educational activities continue at a strong pace. On February 11, 2016, Dr. Robert Ferris from the University of Pittsburgh, UPMC Endowed Professor and Vice Chair and Chief of Head & Neck Surgery, Co-leader of the UPMC Cancer Immunology Program and Associate Director of translational research, delivered the prestigious BCM Bobby R. Alford Grand Round Distinguished Lecture which was endowed by the Diana Helis Henry Medical Research Foundation and Adrienne Helis Malvin Medical Research Foudntion to honor Dr. Alford for his years of service to Baylor and to its foundation. Dr. Ferris addressed the entire college community with his talk entitled “A New Disease, a New Surgical Technique, and a New Modality: Therapeutic Targeting of HPV-Associated Head & Neck Cancer.” It was a thoughtful stimulating lecture on this virally mediated cancer and he presented some interesting novel therapies being developed by his lab and other investigators to treat this epidemic disease. We have been fortunate to host several additional guest lecturers this winter at Departmental Grand Rounds. The distinguished visitors have included: Dr. Robert Lorenz, Surgeon and Medical Administrator at the Cleveland Clinic presented “Laryngeal Reinnervation” Nov. 5, 2015; Dr. Alex Gelbard (Resident class 2013) Assistant Professor, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine presented “New Approaches to the Study of Rare Disease in the Adult Airway” Feb. 3, 2016; and Dr. Emily Boss, Associate Professor of Pediatric Otolaryngology and Health Policy at John Hopkins University School of Medicine presented “Quality, Patient Satisfaction, CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 1

and a little Shared Decision-Making in Pediatric Otolaryngology” Feb. 25, 2016. Most recently, Dr. Scott Strome, Professor and Chair at the University Of Maryland School of Medicine, spoke at BCM Dan Duncan Center Grand Rounds on “Manipulation of the B7-H1 (PDL-1)-PD-1 Axis for the Treatment of Head and Neck Cancer: A Historical Perspective.”

I am proud this quarter to have our issue focus on the growth and expansion in the section of Pediatric Otolaryngology that has occurred in the department over the past 18 months under the leadership of Dr. Ellis Arjmand, Chief of Service at Texas Children’s Hospital. The faculty is transforming the care of pediatric patients in Houston and beyond. Details of their work and new additions can be found throughout this issue.

We completed our recruitment efforts in January interviewing 48 candidates for five resident positions. The class of 2021 were announced on March 18th at the nationwide “Match Day” celebration. Our current residents sat for the annual ABOto In-Service exam in early March.

Finally, seasons change and time marches on. But the mission of the Bobby R. Alford Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery remains the same:

• To Care for Patients• To Educate Learners• To Unravel the Mysteries of Biology and Human Behavior• To Find Inspiration in our Work• To Serve One Another

With all good wishes,

– Donald T. Donovan, MD, FACS

footprint e x p a n s i o nDuring 2015, Texas Children’s Hospital / Baylor College of Medicine had the opportunity to onboard 7 new physician recruits. Before the arrival, the Otolaryngology program had 14 otolaryngologists providing services to the entire city of Houston and its surrounding area. Texas Children’s Division of Otolaryngology is now the largest pediatric ear, nose and throat program in the country. We now have 21 attendings stationed throughout the greater Houston community, expanding our clinical presence in the community to the following areas: The Woodlands, Cy-Fair, Sugar Land, Clear Lake and West Campus. We now have multiple providers 5 days a week in most locations. We also have our 22nd recruit committed to join us in 2016, and additional recruitment is underway to staff locations in Kingwood and the Texas

It is my pleasure to introduce you to the Division of Pediatric Otolaryngology in the Bobby Alford Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine.

The members of the Pediatric Otolaryngology Division are based at Texas Children’s Hospital, the largest children’s hospital in the United States. We serve a large and diverse population in the Houston metropolitan area, as well as patients from throughout the southern and western United States.

Our 21 faculty members in Pediatric Otolaryngology have all completed fellowships in pediatric otolaryngology, laryngology, or neurotology. All have academic appointments in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery and Baylor College of Medicine. At Texas Children’s Hospital, Pediatric Otolaryngology is the largest program in the Department of Surgery.

With active recruitment ongoing for additional faculty members for new clinical location in The Woodlands, Kingwood, and Bellaire, we expect to have 25 faculty members by the summer of 2016 and 28 by the summer of 2017.

Children’s The Woodlands Hospital, opening in spring 2017.

In the course of providing better access to our program, developing our sub-specialty expertise was also critical. Some of the areas that we had for potential growth were: Aerodigestive clinic, complex airway reconstruction surgery, sleep medicine, vascular malformations and anomalies, head and neck oncology, thyroid surgery, cleft lip and palate, voice, Down syndrome, and the treatment of hearing impairment and complex otology (including Cochlear Implant and Microtia / Atresia).
