From Our President…..
Welcome all to a new and exciting year in the UNC Woman's Club. Your
Board and other Leadership Team Members have been working and meet-
ing throughout the summer to plan an array of meaningful and fun ad-
ventures for us. Our theme for the year is Leading With Wisdom and Pas-
sion: Honoring Our Traditions, Celebrating Change.
We have a rich history beginning in 1949- 1950 (according to our historian, Myr-
na Bower). Throughout the years our focus has been on friendship, intellectual offerings,
service and social activities with an intertwining path to the University. This will continue,
but with many new offerings, emphasizing a focus on the arts, travel and Intellectual en-
richment.
This year we are offering seven new "Out of the Box One Day Travel Opportunities," led by
our Past Presidents and our current Second Vice President. The variety should please every-
one: The NC School of the Arts, Old Salem Holiday Tour and Candle Tea, Multiflora Green-
house, Symphony Matinee, The NC Zoo , Exploring Pinehurst, and The Southern Supreme
Fruit Cake Factory are planned. Two new museum groups will be available, one to the North
Carolina Museum of Art and one to the Nasher Museum including galleries, a holiday visit
to Duke Chapel and a Trolley Tour through Duke Gardens with lunch. There will be an addi-
tional Duke Trolley Tour as well in the late spring. Sign up will be very important at our
Opening Reception on September 25 in the Fed Ex Global Center as space will be assigned
for all events.
Our fall and spring programs, with lunch for most, will be offered with an additional No-
vember program at the Friday Center with author Lee Smith speaking and reading from her
new book, Dimestore: A Writer's Life. This also is the year that the Sir Walter Cabinet will be
visiting us as a part or their regular biennial visit to the UNC. A special program is planned
for these members and our members in March at The Carolina Inn. The Spring Luncheon at
the Carolina Club will be held in April. The kick off of programs meetings in October will be
the Newcomers' Tea at my home and a visit to Whitehall at the Villa with Elizabeth Lind-
quist as our speaker.
For the first time we have planned a Valentine's Day Benefit (at the home of Judy Tilson)
for the purpose of supporting our Woman's Club Scholarship. We believe there is something
special for everyone in our line-up of events. Please join us for as many as possible. Of
course our special activities will continue as many of you have been a part of these for many
years and new club members as well as returning ones are always welcome.
As a special request, I am asking that each member invite a new member into our member-
ship, and let us all reach out and welcome each other as well as our new and potentially new
members into our wonderful mix. Remember that the number one reason why potential
members do not join is because no one invited them. We are "The Southern Part of Heaven."
Let's make an effort to get to know each other better through our genuine fellowship.
I am happy to be your president working with you and a super board and leadership team. I
look forward to meeting and greeting each of you at our opening reception on Sunday,
September 25.
