Reaming
Tapping
Drilling
• Tailstock– jacobs chuck– taper shank drill
Boring
• Enlarge or True an existing or drilled hole
Correct boring tool position
Incorrect boring tool positions
Boring tool size
Types of boring bar operations
Internal thread relief
Long bar length creates chatter
Reaming
Reaming
• Accurately finish drilled or bored holes to size
• Held in tailstock• holes drilled to .010” to .015” undersize
then reamed• Reaming speeds are half that for drilling• Reaming feeds are twice that for drilling
Tapping
• Drill press – larger holes– less accurate
Starting Taps - Lathe
– smaller holes–more accurate
Hand Tapping with lathe
• Center Drill
• Drill Hole (use oil)
• Get tap and tap wrench
• Disengage spindle gear
• NO POWER
• Rotate spindle by hand to start tap
• Move to work bench
Grooving and Parting
Knurling - uses• improve appearance
• provide good gripping surface
• increase size for press fits
Knurling tools
• Most knurls displace metal by pressure (soft metals)
Knurling tools
Knurling Tips
• Use oil
• Hold between centers
• Use low speeds (as for threading)
• Even pressure on both rollers
• Don’t stop lathe while in contact
