Otaki Potters
President’s Monthly Update
Greetings! It’s all go at the moment; lots happening and
Christmas still to come.
The Paul Pepworth Workshop was great value. 53 glazes to
choose from with multiple combinations. There were some very
exciting results and many of the participants have been inspired
to take Paul up on his offer of a 25% discount on any products
purchased before the end of October. We are grateful to Paul
and Jenny for making it such a successful day. I think we can
look forward to some vibrant work coming out of the kilns. If
you missed the workshop but would
like to purchase and use Decopot
Glazes then see me.
There will be at least one 1200
firing in October so let me know if
need to fire work for the Arts
Trail.
The Raku day for club members and
adult classes was very successful
with great colour. The weather was
kind to us. Thank you to everyone
who took part and pitched in.
Our next raku will be the Public
Raku on December 7th. If you can
help with distributing posters or
putting one in the back window of
your car please pick them up from
the rooms or contact me. This
event is more about promoting the
club and giving families a hands-on
art experience than a fund raiser.
We will need as much help on the
day as we can get so if you can give
an hour or two that would be
appreciated. If you can’t make it on
the day we would appreciate some
baking.

Below are examples of his glazes. More photos Page 6
The Pot-ins are going well but they are falling on the same people every time so it would be
great if you could get along to help or take clay home to make pots. During November we will be
making a special effort to make wheel pots so if this is your forte please get on board.
Clay will be available if you just want to come in and pot, please label pots “OPC”.
The new agreement with Otaki College has been finalised. We will be charged for the power we
use at very competitive rates. Rent has been waived and other services will be provided free of
charge. It is likely there will be some adjustments to firing costs in 2014. Current charges will
remain the same until the AGM in January.
When the new shed was erected to house the gas kiln, part of the agreement was that we
would paint our buildings. The new agreement requires us to maintain our buildings to the same
standard as those of the college and consult with them over the colour scheme. The intention is
to paint the buildings over the summer months.

The recent cleaning bee was small in number but what a great job! Very
impressive! People who were members prior to July 1st this year are required
to do a two-hour working bee once a year as part of their membership or, if
they prefer, pay $30 and we will get someone to do it for you. The next
cleaning bee will be on 14th December. There are 15 places. Those who don’t
get their name on the list will need to pay $30. Contact May Hastings.
We will be organising two working bees, one on Sunday afternoon October 20th to move
bricks from Otaihanga to Brent’s place and getting advertising boards ready for the Public
Raku and Festival of Pots. There will be another in November to paint new plinths being made
by senior boys in the College Technology Dept. If you want to do one of these rather than the
cleaning bee, email me or Brent.
Access: The College is moving ahead with
plans to close entry to and exit from the
school when the students are moving around
the grounds. We haven’t been given a date
when this will commence but will keep you
informed.
Please remember to avoid driving through the
grounds between 11.15am- 11.45am and
1.40pm-2.30pm.
We are missing 2 hump molds long and oval in
shape. These are needed back in the rooms
urgently. If you have borrowed them please
return them and leave them on the bench so
that we know that they have come back.
Wellington Potters Supplies are no longer
importing Australian Clays. We are now getting
BRT, BRS, Raku Red and Waikato White from
Waikato Ceramics. These clays are now
available to members at $31 per 12.5kg bag.
We are also trialling Macs White ($44 per
20kg bag).
The Otaki College Gala is on October 19th. If
someone would like to convene a club stall or if
you want to sell pots, let me know asap.
The Kapiti Arts Trail will be held on the first
weekend in November. Brochures will be in the
clubrooms when they become available. A good
opportunity to get out and about and be
inspired.
The Christmas Doo will be held at Byron’s Restaurant on Thursday December
12th , $30 per head. Drinks at 6.30pm. Contact Joy.
I will be taking orders for Christmas Hams again this year. I will put info on the
board or you can email me. Payment to me, please make cheques out to cash.
Di Taylor has resigned as Secretary due to work commitments. We thank Di for the good work
she has done for the club. Kaye Stead is taking over the role until the AGM.
Welcome to Caitlin Taylor as our new newsletter editor.
Congratulations to Margaret Hunt on completing her Diploma of Ceramic Arts – Level 7. Her
exhibition opens on October 23rd. Let’s turn out in force to the opening and make it a great
evening. - Margaret's invitation is on the following page.
It is with sadness that we heard of the recent death of Jane Bale. Jane’s funeral was on
Tuesday the 8th of October in Waikanae. Our thoughts are with Ern at this time.
Rod
Festival Of Pots & Garden Art 2014 Newsletter.
Hi there Fellow Potters.
Planning for the next Festival is
well underway. The Posters & Post
cards inv it ing people to
participate in either exhibiting or
attending have been produced. We
would request that you grab a
poster for your car or for your
venue during the Kapiti Arts trail.
They can be uplifted from the
sign in desk at the Club rooms.
Road signs have been completed &
will be erected early December.
They are quite distinctive &
should attract the attention of
the Public. Mike Page has agreed
to co-ordinate their erection.
The venue is “Anam Cara” (formally: Coehaven). It’s a beautiful place. We have a written
contract with the generous owners which clearly identify the Clubs responsibilities.
Marion Mealings will be the person leading the teams to man the gate. So when she contacts you
to do a stint please respond generously.
Michelle Read has agreed to head up the team responsible for the catering. She will need Club
members to provide her with baking that can be sold to the Public, & the manning of the Café.
Maureen Hunter will be co-ordinating the collection and indoor display of exhibits.
It’s not an easy task, so please note the times of delivery & pick-up.
Karen Piercy is generously maintaining our website and Facebook pages.
NB: Amended dates 30th Oct – 26th November
I’m requesting that everyone in the Club supports this event. It is a great feeling selling one of
your creations to another person who is going to appreciate it. It will encourage your creativity.
Participating in the running of this festival is for your benefit, and it allows the Club to maintain
the current level of subscriptions, and provide new equipment, like the new Shimpo wheels. Sure
beats selling raffle tickets?
If you have any suggestions please feel free to contact me. It is the committees’ goal that the
Festival of Pots & Garden Art runs a smoothly as possible for everyone involved.
Cheers
Brent
Editors Note
Succeeding Diana as Newsletter editor is a hard act to follow and I’ll do my best to maintain the
high standard.
Please let me know if there is anything you would like to be included in the Newsletter.
Particularly, I’d like to include photos of your work. Pieces often get removed from the shelves
before members get a chance to view them and it is always good to see new ideas be it glazing or
construction so please get busy with your cameras!
The cut-off for publication of your photos and advertisements is the 7th of each month. Please
email them directly to me (low resolution JPEG files preferred).
I will endeavour to get the newsletter out during the week following Committee meetings.
Cheers
Caitlin.
