Please remeber that we are an all volunteer organisation. While we try to deal with everything that lands on our plate in a timely fashion, there’s nobody sitting behind some desk dipensing cheery greetings to callers, brewing the morning coffee and doggedly researching the answers to your questions. So if it takes us a couple of days to get back to you, please accept our sincerest apologies in advance.

So March is here and that means one thing... most of the sealed events are done and dusted, Ngapara the only excep on later in April. On the topic of dust however, the Otago Rally on the 9/10 April is looking as strong as ever with some energe c interna onal entries and plenty of local compe tors in the mix too. We have a couple of rally sprints through the season and a smaller Club rally, back in Lawrence on the 5 Nov. So change your tyres and get into it – HP for inspira on...

The current website is long overdue for a makeover and well guess what... into the 21st century we come and in the next few weeks we will be showing off a professionally designed and mul -func onal version that will make the admin of the site easier for the exec to modify and keep up to date, and will be a lot pre er on the eyes for the masses.

Timing gear is also something hot on the execs list of things to do... watch this space or keep turning up to our ever more popular hill climbs...

Going back to the rally, if there is anyone out there that is able to offer some much needed help with stage block marshals and ming crews, please contact me on 0294562102 or email [email protected] .

March is a bit of me off for me in the weekends, for a change, but I pay for it in April... There are 5 weekends in April, 1st one is Lawrence ¼ Mile, 2nd is the Otago Rally, 3rd and 4th are NZ Super Truck rounds in the Nth Island – I’ll just stay there for the week I think... the 5th weekend in April is going to be the Whare Flat Rally Sprint, Jake is selflessly taking this on and insists I sit it out – yeah cheers, keeps the family happy if I visit them on the occasional weekend I guess haha.

Thanks to Cory for genera ng another newsle er and hassling all the right people for content (inc me!) Thanks to our exec for all the hard work and making each event such a success.

Details for all events are on Facebook and the website, if you get stuck, flick me a text.Daniel Cresswell, President.

EDITORS NOTEIts been 3 months already. Thanks again to those who have let me use photos and those who have provided content so this isn’t just a list of results.Especially everyones hero, Hayden Paddon for taking the me out of his hec c schedule to write us a short story!

It’s a quiet me of year for our club so most of the reports are from ESCC events, But the coming 3 months should have plenty to fill the pages.

A couple of our members James Mitchell and Ma Hayes competed in the All Tarmac Port Hills Rally near Christchurch with good results. I will leave it at that and there will be a report in Next issue from James.

We are always looking for keen people to be Marshalls and Helpers at events, so don’t be shy. Its a cheap way of ge ng involved in motorsport! Also always on the lookout for paddocks or loca ons to hold AutoX events in.And if there’s something or a road you would like to see run as an event, don’t hesitate to contact Jake Thomas (027-448-9407) or anyone on the Exec commi ee.

If there is anything you would like to see included in this newsle er, don’t hesitate to contact me!

CheersCory Saxton - [email protected]

EVENT REPORTSThe 20th of December saw the running of McCrosties Autox #2 in very challenging conditions. The paddock was very very wet and took all day to dry.

The event was won by Brayden Palmer in his Toyota Levin BZR, narrowly beating Richard Chadwick in his AE82 Corolla Rallycar by just 0.3 in the final run. FWD invasion!?

Third overall was Glenn Frew in the White Evo who will be kicking himself for a 5 second cone-hit penalty in his final run, costing him the victory.

Big thanks to all competitors, volunteers and Dean McCrostie for the continued support of our AutoX season

Steven Thompson

Thanks to Sheldon Porter for the drone shot andThanks to Gill King for the use of her photos.

The Kaitangata Hillclimb was run on the 16th of January and featured 7 of our OSCC members on the entry list.

A very tricky road on the day faced the drivers with wildly varying road conditions from one corner to the next. Silty Kai coal dust near the start, deep gluggy mud thru the trees and nice swept gravel as it opens towards the finish.

Greg Keen and newcomer Zeke King had a bit of a battle for the minors in C Class with Zeke managing a 1min29.73 (28th overall) while Gregs best run was a 1min32.82 (30th overall)

Cory “Chinstud” Saxton narrowly missed the podium in B Class with a 1min25.29 putting him 4th in class and 24th overall. Wild slides and no lines perhaps slowed him on the day.

Darren Keen decided to sit out the 4th run on the day, with a best time of 1min21.96 he was 2nd in B Class and 18th overall. I guess we will never know if he had a blinder run up his sleeve...

B Class 1301-1600cc was won by Richard Chadwick in his Corolla. He was dominant throughout the day, leading the class after each of the 4 runs. His best run of 1min18.58 came in run 4 and placed him 1st B Class and 12th overall. Outstanding!

A Class 0-1300cc was won by Steven Thompson in similar fashion, leading the field after all 4 runs and ending up with a 1min21.01 for 1st A Class and 18th overall

The $1000 1st Overall cash prize was taken by Rhys Gardner after a ferocious battle with Dean Bond. Rhys had trailed Dean after 2 runs but upped his pace in a spectacular come-from-behind victory. 1min09.44 was Rhys’ winning time, narrowly beating out Deans 1min09.92 The final spot on the podium went to Chris Hey in the highly developed MR2 with a 1min12.88 3rd overall and 1st 2WD

On Feb 7th we ran our annual Bethunes Gully Hillclimb in beautiful sunny conditions. A strong field of 26 cars turned out to tackle this tricky little hill.

Run 1 saw Daniel Henry and Ross Buchan both fire their Honda CRXs off at just about the same corner, fortunately no real damage was done. Top notch vehicle extraction was performed by a very capable Rav4.

Mark Miller arrived late in his BMW and promptly set the world alight with three quick fire runs, his best time being a 53.98 good enough for 8th overall.

Josh Perkins impressed with his seriously committed driving in the 13b Series 1 RX7. He ended the day 4th overall with a 52.40

The award for most engine oil consumed went to Shaun Turner, whose Honda Integra was blowing consistent clouds of blue. Thanks to Castrol for their support.

Overall Top Three:1st Glenn Frew Evo 47.782nd Aaron Parish Cosworth Evo 50.263rd Matt Hayes Integra 51.71

ESCC held 2 events over the weekend of 13th, 14th of Feb.

Saturday was the Morris Saddle Gravel Hillclimb which saw 6 of us OSCC boys having a go along with another few volunteering their time to marshall! Very much appreciated.

A bit over 3km of corners and more corners with a couple that could easily catch you out as a few found out, the most unlucky was Paul Gouman in his V8 RX7 who found the ditch and bounced up the bank to lay it on its side. He got away with fairly minimal damage considering.A tight battle at the sharp end of B class between Jake Thomas and Richie Chadwick who was trailing Jake by just 1 second after runs 1 and 2.Unfortunately Richie had a spin at the fastest section of road on run 3 and Jake set an even quicker time leaving a gap of 1.5seconds when it was all done and dusted. Jake and Richie claiming 1st (2:25.9) and 2nd (2:27.4) in B class with Kevin Laird 1.6seconds behind Richie in 3rd (2:29.0) B class.

Steven (Sanchez) Thompson was his usual dominant self progressively going faster with each run, getting serious with sticker tires on the front for run 3 to help with turn in. Photos don’t lie and the hot line 1 meter up the inside bank was obviously working.1st in A class and 13th equal overall mixing in with some of the big names. His best time 2:29.0, one of 3 people to set that exact time!

Emma Gilmour had double entered in her Suzuki Maxi Swift but only her first 4 runs counted. It was enough for her to take out the win with a 2:13.9. Rhys Gardner was hot on her heals in 2nd with a 2:14.6 his best.

Sunday was a grass AutoX at Rhys Gardners property 9km south of Balclutha. The catlins had certainly turned the weather on for this weekend and a pretty sweet track over 2 paddocks, including a jump for those brave or silly enough made for an awesome day.

63 entries made for a long wait between runs. 10 of those OSCC members.Times were fairly tame on the first run as the grass was quite damp. The third run was where the business happened. Most notable was Richie Chadwick who went out early in the final run and set a blistering pace with a 1:14.45 which had him sitting in 1st place overall, and it wasn’t until the last couple of 4wd class cars that finally knocked him down to 3rd overall. Bloody awesome drive.

There were 7 of us OSCC members separated by 5 seconds, about middle of the pack and covering all 4 classes!

Braydon Waayer and Michael Stevens had an eventful weekend with the clutch pedal failing on Braydon’s Legacy Friday night when they arrived in the catlins.Parts sourced from Roger Laird didn’t help solve the problem on Saturday at the hillclimb, so they made the drive back to Dunedin and had the whole engine out and back in by the early hours. They arrived happy at the AutoX but unfortunately the clutch was still having issues. However they competed and I’m sure had as much fun as the rest of us.

Great weekend away with great people.

Cory Saxton.

Otago Rally 8 - 10th AprilMarkko Märtin a last-minute entry for Otago RallyFormer Ford, Peugeot and Subaru factory driver, Markko Märtin, is a last-minute entry for the 2016 Otago Rally, to be based in Dunedin from April 8 to 10.

Markko Martin replaced Mikko Hirvonen as the star driver at this year’s Otago Classic Rally. The Estonian will be co-driven by the equally experienced Belgian, Stéphane Prévot, in a Ford Escort RS1800 prepared by the Rossendale Wines Rally Team.Märtin replaces the previously entered Mikko Hirvonen, who has had to pull out of the event after his current employer, MINI, added another event to their Cross Country Rally program. While disappointed that Hirvonen will be unable to come to the Otago Rally this year, event spokesman, Roger Oakley, said that Märtin will be a popular replacement.“Nobody is more disappointed than Mikko to have had to pull out of the event, as he was really looking forward to it. However, a change in MINI’s plans meant that it was out of his control,” Oakley said.“We completely understand his situation, and look forward to welcoming him to the Otago Rally in the future.“Having said that, Markko Märtin will also be a huge attraction. In his days in the World Rally Championship he was one of the most popular drivers, and his speed was electric.“With five WRC wins to his credit, including an historic victory for Ford in the 2003 Rally of Finland, he has huge credentials.“I know that the Otago Rally fans will be keen to meet both Markko and Stéphane, and see them on some of the event’s iconic stages.”

Märtin retired from the World Rally Championship at the end of the 2005 season after 84 events and 101 stage wins.Only last weekend he had his first drive in an historic rally, driving a Ford Escort RS1800 in the Boucles à Bastogne event in Belgium, where he finished second.“After competing in Belgium, I am very much looking forward to heading to New Zealand for the Otago Rally,” Märtin said.“I have fond memories of competing in New Zealand’s WRC event, and Stéphane and I are eager to experience the Otago Rally – an event we have heard so many good reports about.”Current Hyundai factory team co-driver, John Kennard, has been instrumental in getting Markko Märtin as a late replacement for Mikko Hirvonen, to which the Otago Rally organisers are extremely grateful.Together with the partnership with Brent Rawstron and the Rossendale team, Kennard’s assistance has been vital.

The Otago Rally is supported by major events funding from the Dunedin City Council.

From HPHi everyone.

Huge thanks for all your continued support throughout our campaign. Its certainly an exciting period as we get up to speed with the new car and aim to challenge at the front more often. We still have some work to do but will keep working hard until we are on the top step. Its humbling to have the amount of support we do have.

We have also had great support from Otago and its no secret that Rally Otago is one of my favourite rallys. Look forward to catching up at the rally again this year as we are currently working on some things to be there again this year - its too good to miss!

Thanks, Hayden

Its just over 6 weeks now until I head to Qatar to compete in the Sealine Rally. It’s a 1633km cross country rally held over 5 days and 5 stages averaging around 320km each. I’m unsure yet on the vehicle that I will be driving but it will most likely be a Nissan Patrol or Toyota Prado running in the production T2 class. My codriver for the event will be Lisette Bakker from the Netherlands and although we were both the winners from the FIA Cross Country selection week we’ve never sat in a car together. Throughout the training last November from which we were selected we changed codrivers every day – but through the random selection we never actually worked together. So here’s hoping she likes my sense of humor as we will be spending a fair few hours together! In preparation for the event I have been training 6 times a week to help my fitness and very soon I will start going to hot yoga to help with the acclimatization to the heat. The temperature will be in the mid 30’s so being used to the heat will help a lot. At the training week I didn’t find it too uncomfortable whilst driving as we can have the windows down (as they have nets in them for safety) but as soon as you got stuck in the sand (which is really easy to do) it didn’t take long to overheat whilst trying to dig your truck out of the sand. It was very hard work. So my theory is to prevent this – don’t get stuck in the sand. Before I head away to Qatar I will have the Otago rally which I’m really looking forward to. Our Suzuki Swift Maxi is really starting to perform and handle as I want so I’m really looking forward to getting out onto our awesome Otago stages.

Thanks Motorsport NZ, FIA and QMMF

There’s water in my carby. What, why? How?I don’t know...Where is it, I’ll have a look at it.Ok, it’s in the pool.

My wife had her driver’s test the other day. She got 8 out of 10. The other 2 guys jumped out of the way.

Did you hear about the guy that lost his left arm and leg in a car crash? He’s all right now.

There are a lot of female hormones in beer. When I drink five bottles I also can’t drive a car and start behaving irrationally.

What’s the difference between BMWs and Porcupines?Porcupines carry their pricks on the outside.

Did you know CHEVROLET is an acronym? Can Hear Every Valve Rattling On Long Extended Trips.

What’s the good thing about Fords? They come out of the factory with the problem circled.

Why was the leper caught speeding? He couldn’t take his foot off the accelerator.

Wife told she doesn’t like her new car. She wants something that goes from zero to 140 in 3 seconds. I gave her the bathroom scales instead.
