This Guide will assist you in implementing Call to Faith—A Thematic Approach to Young Adolescent Catechesis in Catholic schools. You will find easy to follow five-day lesson plans that help you use the Grade 7 and the Grade 8 Teacher Editions with the sessions in the Sacraments Faith Booklet.

Each two-page lesson plan in this Guide corresponds to one of the sessions in the Sacraments Faith Booklet. A one-page lesson plan corresponds to Faith in Action.

Each of these lesson plans

• notes which chapter and grade level of the Teacher Edition to use.

• correlates the page numbers of the Sacraments Faith Booklet to the Grade 7 or 8 Teacher Edition.

• indicates any online resources referenced in this Guide, such as full-page prayer celebrations and chapter and unit reviews.

• provides a day-by-day overview that highlights the minor difference between the Sacraments Faith Booklet and the Grade 7 or 8 Teacher Edition, providing additional direction for activities or features that only appear in the Sacraments Faith Booklet.

• Optional Activity: Invite three speakers to witness to their own experiences of building community: (1) a teenager or parent on the family, (2) a parish leader on parish life, (3) a community leader on the town, city, or region.

SERVE YOUR COMMUNITY

– What did you learn about yourself?

– How did your group project go?

– What did you learn about working for the common good of low-income families?

– What did you learn about yourself in doing the project?

– What did you learn about God and about your faith in doing the project?

FB Pages 6–7; Grade 8 TE Pages 220–221

Additional materials needed for Optional Activity: seven pieces of chart paper or newsprint

• Prayer: Use the Open prayer on wrap page 220.

• Follow the Open and Build directions on wrap pages 220–221 to process the text and the Check This Out! sidebar.

• Optional Activity on the precepts of the Church:

– Invite five volunteers to write the five precepts of the Church on the top of five pieces of chart paper or newsprint. Use the list on FB page 7. Include “Providing for the Material Needs of the Church” as an additional rule/law on a sixth sheet of newsprint. At the bottom of the each sheet, have a student draw a continuum—a line with 1 at the start (indicating easier to follow) across the page and ending with 5 (indicating harder to follow). Invite another volunteer to write “Personal Rules for Continued Spiritual Growth” on another sheet of paper.

– Have the volunteers post these seven sheets of paper around the room, and serve as recorders for the activity.

– Divide the class into seven groups, and place each group at one of the papers. Have the recorders for each of the five Church precepts write down the group’s responses to this question: How can this precept help you grow in your relationship with God? Have the sixth recorder write down the group’s responses to this question: How can this rule help you grow in your relationship with God?

– Then each recorder should ask group members to rate, on a scale of 1 to 5, how easy (1) or hard (5) it is to follow the precept/rule and mark the response on the continuum. Meanwhile, the group at the Personal Rules paper should brainstorm concrete ideas for continuing to grow spiritually and to list these on the paper.

– Ask the groups to rotate to the next paper. Repeat the process until all groups

have visited three or four papers. Then allow students to circulate around the room and look at the papers.

– Facilitate a large group discussion by posing fill-in-the-blank statements such as “I now know…,” “The most difficult precept for young people to follow seems to be…because…,” and so forth. Review the Personal Rules on the paper together and ask the young people to consider choosing one of them for continued spiritual growth.

• Work with Connect Your Faith on FB page 7 by following the Close Activity directions on wrap page 221.

• Prayer: Follow the Open prayer on wrap page 244.

• Then continue with the Build directions on wrap pages 244–245.

• Optional Activity for the text on FB page 36:

– Create three groups, equal in size. Assign each group one of the three sections on FB page 36: description of the Rites, the four elements, or the structure of the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

– Tell each group to read its section and devise a way to teach that paragraph to the large group.

– Give them 10 minutes to design their teaching plan. They can use newsprint, role-play, perform a skit, design true or false questions, and so on. In other words, encourage them to be as creative as they would like, as long as they cover the content and key ideas in their assigned paragraph.

– Invite the groups, beginning with the description of the Rites, to present their parts of the lesson to the large group.

• Before reading Let Go on FB page 37, add this point: The Church encourages its members to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation frequently. Some good times to do so are during Advent and Lent, when your conscience bothers you, when you have a bad fault that you can’t shake, and when you have seriously gone against God’s commandments.

Instruct the groups to create a skit based on a real situation one or several of them have been in that is similar to Mike’s: making a commitment that you later wanted to break. Tell the groups to be sure to have a resolution to their skit—showing what they ended up doing in the situation.

– Give the groups about ten minutes to create their skits. Then have the groups perform for the large group.

– Discuss: What would life be like if we never made promises?

• As a way to focus students on the concept of cycles and patterns in life (later to be related to the Church year and liturgy), draw a time- line across newsprint or on the board. In the large group, brainstorm changes that happen over the course of life: the predictable things, some of the unpredictable things that might happen, and so on. Write these on the timeline. Then, look at the timeline and talk about how everyone’s life has a rhythm and a pattern to it—day-to-day as well as year-to-year.

• Check This Out! on FB page 57 contains information on the Liturgy of the Hours similar to that found on the reduced student page on wrap page 247.

• To work with Faith Walk on FB page 57:

– Ask students to create their own personal Prayer Menu. They can use the ideas presented on this page and choose additional items to put on their menus if they would like.

– Distribute pieces of poster board, and pens, markers, or colored pencils. (They can “laminate” their menus if you make clear contact paper and scissors available.)

– After students have made their menus, have them share with a partner. Then, as a large group, talk about which of the choices on the menus they can incorporate in their prayer diet today.

• Follow the directions for Share Your Faith on FB page 53; then compare responses in the large group. As an alternative, use the Optional Activity below.

• Optional Activity:

– Have students work with partners to complete the activity. Put up six pieces of newsprint around the room, each labeled at the top with the name of one of the Church seasons. On each, create two columns: “symbols/colors” and “parish and family practices.”

– Distribute the pairs evenly among the six newsprints. Each pair then writes on the newsprint one new item for each column (something not already written there). When a pair is finished writing on one newsprint, they rotate to the next. Continue until the newsprints are filled or there is no new information for pairs to record on them.

– Review the results with the group. Comment or add information where appropriate. Emphasize the richness of meaning celebrated all through the year.
