Backbone Award

Frances received a Backbone Award for her volunteer work for the Manitoba chapter over the past four years. She is a member of several committees and participates actively within the Chapter, and is often a “behind-the-scenes” worker, who can be found setting up tables, taking down displays, selling tickets, stuffing envelopes, rolling coins or just doing “whatever needs to be done”. Frances took on the lead role in obtaining auction prizes for the2016 Cheese and Wine event. As well, she helps lead the annual Fight Fractures with Flapjacks pancake breakfast. Fall forum provides useful information

About 120 people attended the Manitoba Chapter’s fall public forum entitled Nutrients for Healthy Bones: HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH? on Sept. 20, 2016 at the Norwood-St. Boniface Legion. The two presenters for the evening were Pat McCarthy Briggs, BSc, RD, MHEd, and Anna Pohorecky, RD. Dr. Bill Leslie, MD, MSc, FRCPC joined them immediately after the presentation for a very informative panel discussion. The panelists answered many questions and discussed topics of interest with the audience. Guests were invited to have their height measured at our Stand Tall display. It turned out to be a very informative evening with people leaving satisfied with additional knowledge and information and a gift from Manitoba Dairy Farmers. “The discussion about diet, Calcium and Vitamin D was something people badly need to hear. The panel was lively and provided a lot of information,” one guest stated in their evaluation.

The Award for Overall Excellence is presented to an Osteoporosis Canada Chapter that has succeeded in furthering the osteoporosis cause through its numerous activities/ work in the areas of education, fund development, communications and volunteer development. Started in 1995 and chartered since 2000, The Manitoba Chapter has been promoting the national organization at every opportunity. According to the award presenters, one of the strengths of the Manitoba Chapter is the quality and number of educational activities in which it offers.
