CURRENT INTERNAL SECURITY SCENARIO

Our Country developing at a fast pace. Development of infrastructure and business has resulted in increase in the vulnerable points

We have been, and continue to be the target of the Jehadis.

The ability of the terrorists to effectively hit at will the chosen targets has been a matter of concern.

Tacit or direct support of the neighbouring states has weakened us further

Internal diversities and insurgencies, poor law and order situation, shaky political environment and governance that is not assertive and leaves the various Institutions and business vulnerable.

Insurgencies in North East, J&K, Maoism and Naxalism are some extreme ideologies, our democracy needs to address.

CURRENT INTERNAL SECURITY SCENARIO

Lack of organised economic and infrastructural developments have added to the dissatisfaction of the body politic in fringe states, as such adversely effects the security situation.

Attacks in various forms of terrorism have been increasing, 26/11 being the eye opener.

As a Nation we have not been able to handle our neighbours very diplomatically, as such the support from the neighbours is negligible.

The loosely held coalition Govt in the centre, uncooperative opposition and state Govts, render the central Govt. ineffective.

SECURITY CONCERNS OF BUSINESS

Under the situation, expansion and dependence on the private players for security, is a market paradigm.

The threats to Industry exist from within and without.

The usual threats are to personnel, information, materials and property- from disasters, whether manmade or natural, and by the criminal acts.

The internal situation being what it is, the threats to business have multiplied manifold.

It is time the Industry and business realised that the Security was too serious a business to be left to Outsourced, untrained and unverified Guards, with no accountability.

High time that the Managements realised that the Security is a management issue and can not be left to the Security Managers alone.

Dec 3, 2008 Assessment by ASSOCHAM The private security business, a Rs 22,000 crore industry now, would

touch Rs 50,000 crore in four years, as security all of a sudden has become top priority for Indian Inc, it said.

Corporate would up their security budgets by 35-40 per cent, the industry chamber said.

The industry, which has been growing at 25 per cent over the past 5-7 years, would achieve a growth rate of 125 per cent by 2012.

Since a lot of industrial expansion, especially in the infrastructure sector, would take place during the 11th Five-Year Plan, the cost of security gadgets that need to be imported will work out to Rs 20,000 crore in the next two years.

Assocham further brings out that the demand for security gadgets has also increased in educational institutions, hospitals, shopping malls and business centres.

Not only will the manufacturing of security gadgets see voluminous growth, there will more demand for security personnel.

It is expected that over 2 lakh security professionals would be required in industrial installations in next two years.

What does 26/11 indicate to the Business

Be prepared to be surprised. Bombs and IEDs are a clear possibility. A terrorist attack can be ferocious and well,

very possible. Planning for Security of the facility is

inescapable and top priority. Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity

Plans are for real, not merely on paper. Kidnapping and extortion threats are also for

real. Each management operations needs to have

security plan dovetailed into it. Mock drills are required to be done, and not

merely reported to have been done.

But there is a Gap! Most have security services, these are essentially for a

show. The sense of security has not yet creeped into the

people. The Security services, whether private or Govt. are

unprofessional, in that their actions are subjective and not objective, and their responses tardy.

The market forces have not yet motivated the various players to invest in professionalism in this sector.

The youth and the professionals have not yet attracted the motivated section of the professionals into this line.

Lack of overall interest and professionalism is the gap. It is this gap that OSSIM has visions to plug.
