Annex BReport of the Grand Guide

to Grand Conclave 2014-2015

most Worthy Grand Supreme ruler and Brethren, I have much pleasure in presenting my third report asGrand Guide.

I am pleased to confirm that during the last year all provinces with the exception of two have receivedone or more visits by a Grand Visitor. Visits to the Conclaves in these two provinces are up to date. allConclaves in the British Isles save a small handful of units have been visited since the beginning of 2010.

In all forty-three visits have been made since the last meeting of Grand Conclave. I would like to takethis opportunity of thanking the four Grand Visitors, Very Worthy Bros. mike Jones, arnold long,James newman and Jon Whitaker, who are all very busy Freemasons, for their great enthusiasm anddedication during their term of office in travelling many hundreds of miles to attend the Conclavesassigned to them. they have delivered their reports on the health of the Conclaves in a timely, accurateand concise manner and these have always made very interesting and on occasions entertaining reading.In one Induction Ceremony, the Grand Visitor reported on a fortuitous escape for the Conclave Guarderwho had somewhat tardily vacated his seat, as an arrow buried itself in the temple door inches fromwhere he had been sitting. On another occasion, a provincial visit coinciding with that of the GrandVisitor had resulted in a serious under-estimation of dining numbers. an urgent call to the local Fish andChip shop for supplies was required, although I am pleased to report that a plate rather than newspaperwas provided for the Grand Visitor! On a serious note, the Grand Visitors’ reports not only provide anexcellent snapshot of the health of the Order, but are also copied to the respective provincial GrandSupreme rulers, allowing them the opportunity of having their Conclaves viewed through anindependent pair of eyes. as is always the case, it would not be possible for the visits to take placewithout the agreement of the provincial Grand Supreme rulers for which I thank them, or without theinvaluable assistance of their provincial Grand recorders and Conclave Secretaries in the pre-planningof the visits and on many occasions providing practical help on the day such as transport to and fromhotels.

turning to statistics, attendances at the meetings have ranged from a high of fifty-two to a low of justfourteen which occurred twice in two Home Counties Conclaves. the former figure was significantlyskewed by an inter-provincial visit, which accounted for the majority of the attendees. In all but onecase, each attendance of over thirty brethren had a high percentage of visitors. the average attendancewas twenty-eight per meeting, roughly sixteen members and twelve visitors. the number of membersattending ranged from an excellent eighty-seven per cent at one meeting to a low of forty-six per cent atanother. the average figure was sixty-seven per cent which is an improvement on last year. the highestnumber of members at a meeting was twenty-seven on two occasions and the lowest just seven.

the Grand Visitors have all commented on the warmth of their welcome both in the temple and at theFestive Board. With regard to the work in the temple, it is extremely pleasing to note that the use ofbooks/crib sheets by regular Officers has been commendably low. the majority of ceremonies wereperformed by the Supreme ruler but where necessary, it had been pre-arranged for a senior past Supremeruler to carry out the chair work or assist with important sections of the ritual.

this provides a much improved experience for the candidate rather than for the whole or part of theceremony to be read and even worse read poorly, which was disappointingly still the case on isolatedoccasions. On one visit, the lecture in the princes degree was not given, as none of those present wereconversant with it. Improved planning definitely required! the performance by the other Officers andgeneral standard of floor work was highly commended in many reports, particularly in one Conclavewhere all the progressive offices are occupied by lay brethren – a rare occurrence in itself. this bodeswell for the future. the average score out of ten awarded by the Grand Visitors was eight. there werefive ten out of tens. to quote, ‘I wish we could bottle what this Conclave has in terms of camaraderie,high ceremonial standards and conviviality.’ Conversely there were two scores of just four out of ten. Itis good to note that the Grand Visitors witnessed ceremonies or full rehearsals (slightly more this year)of a degree on all visits with the exception of one meeting, when the old allied Secret monitor degreewas demonstrated. there were approximately two first degree ceremonies for every second degree. atone meeting three Candidates were inducted and at another three admitted to the princes degree. In the

majority of cases, there was only one candidate for each ceremony. It is also evident from the provincialreports which I have received that concerted efforts are being made in respect of recruitment and it isheartening to see that initiatives such as ‘awareness evenings’ and information cards for prospectivecandidates are proving successful.

the thorny subject of Visiting deacons – their attendance and full performance of their duties. theiraverage attendance was sixty-seven per cent, a two per cent improvement over last year! all four wereonly present on five occasions, although as I have commented previously, it does appear that in generalsatisfactory reports were given in their absence. there is always room for improvement though and I stillstrongly advocate the distribution of printed instructions outlining their duties and also stressing to ScrollBearers the full scope of their role – i.e. not just calling the roll!

One important event that occurred during the year was the Consecration of a second Conclave inportugal. I had the great pleasure of joining a small team from Grand Conclave in accompanying themost Worthy Grand Supreme ruler to Coimbra in central portugal in January to consecrate the lusitaniaFidelis Conclave no.614. We were very warmly received and splendidly entertained by our portugueseBrethren. the first Conclave in portugal, Olisipo Fidelis no.464 was consecrated in lisbon back in 2002and is thriving with nearly sixty members and it is extremely heartening that these Brethren now wishto expand the Order to a new area of their country.

the reports of the Grand Visitors and also those submitted by the provincial Grand Guides confirm onceagain the great joy that our ceremonies provide and the truly masonic friendship that the Orderengenders. I have no doubt that the Grand Visitors taking-up their duties for the coming year will deriveas much pleasure from their appointments as has been enjoyed by this year’s team.
