    FactSheet

When longshore workers are coning, signaling or performing other tasks onfoot near cranes, employers shouldtake measures to ensure a safe workenvironment by providing traffic lanes andpersonnel safety zones.

The traffic lanes and personnel safetyzones should be clearly marked, and wideenough to protect longshore workers, accommodate the equipment being usedand, in general, conform to the followingguidance:

Traffic lanes should be wide enough toallow for the widest piece of equipment(e.g., bomb carts, straddle carriers, etc.)expected to be driven within the lanes.

    Personnel safety zones should be

provided on both sides of a traffic lane. All personnel safety zones should be wide

enough to accommodate cone boxesand should provide adequate space forlongshore workers to walk around coneboxes without stepping into traffic lanes.

Provisions should be made to guidedrivers so that haulage equipment doesnot extend into traffic lanes and driverscan align equipment under the crane.

Semi-tractors should be driven withintraffic lanes so that haulage equipmentdoes not extend into personnel safetyzones where longshore workers arepositioned.

Special safety provisions should be madeto accommodate specialty or projectcargo that might be transported under the
