Scope. "his section applies to slings used in con#unction $ith other %aterial handling

Defnitions.
Angle o loading is the inclination of a leg or (ranch of a sling %easured fro% the horiontal
or 'ertical plane as sho$n in ig. N-184-/ pro'ided that an angle of loading of *'e degrees or
less fro% the 'ertical %ay (e considered a 'ertical angle of loading.
Basket hitch is a sling con*guration $here(y the sling is passed under the load and has (oth
ends) end attach%ents) eyes or handles on the hoo or a single %aster lin.
Braided wire rope is a $ire rope for%ed (y plaiting co%ponent $ire ropes.
Bridle wire rope sling is a sling co%posed of %ultiple $ire rope legs $ith the top ends
gathered in a *tting that goes o'er the lifting hoo.
Cable laid endless sling-mechanical joint is a $ire rope sling %ade endless (y #oining the
ends of a single length of ca(le laid rope $ith one or %ore %etallic *ttings.
Cable laid grommet-hand tucked is an endless $ire rope sling %ade fro% one length of
rope $rapped si ti%es around a core for%ed (y hand tucing the ends of the rope inside the
si $raps.

"abric #metal mesh$ is the ei(le portion of a %etal %esh sling consisting of a series of
trans'erse coils and cross rods.
"emale handle #choker$ is a handle $ith a handle eye and a slot of such di%ension as to
per%it passage of a %ale handle there(y allo$ing the use of a %etal %esh sling in a choer

%andle is a ter%inal *tting to $hich %etal %esh fa(ric is attached. +See ig. N-184-1.,
%andle e!e is an opening in a handle of a %etal %esh sling shaped to accept a hoo) shacle

(eing %ade/ and +@, eperience gained on the ser'ice life of slings used in si%ilar
circu%stances. Such inspections shall in no e'ent (e at inter'als greater than once e'ery 12
%onths.
