Oscar is warming up to Frozen.Having taken in the anima-

tion award at the British Acad-emy of Film and Television

Arts and nearly a billion dollarsat the global box office, Disney

Animation also could w in theAcademy Award for best ani-mated feature with its Frozentale inspired by Hans Christian

Andersens The Snow Queen.Still, surprises are a given

at the Academy Awards cer-emony, which this year airslive at 7 p.m. March 2 on ABC(WXYZ-TV).

I think its going to be a closerace, said Butch Hartman, cre-ator and executive producerof Nickelodeons popular car-toon series, The Fairly Odd-parents and T.U.F.F. Puppy, and a graduate of Anchor BayHigh School.

Also nominated for top hon-ors in the animation category -

which was created in 2001 - areThe Croods (20th CenturyFox), Despicable Me 2 (Uni-

versal), Ernest & Celestine(GKIDS) and a second WaltDisney film The Wind Rises.

Im really pulling for myfriends but Im also excited forthe others who are all multital-ented, said Hartman, duringa phone interview from his of-fices in Burbank, Calif. Thosefriends are Chris Sand-

ers, co-writer and director ofCroods, and Cinco Paul, co-

writer of Despicable Me 2.I went to school with Sand-

ers, Hartman said, of the pres-tigious California Institute ofthe Arts that they attendedalong with other renowned an-imators like Tim Burton. Hes(Sanders) one of the best artistsIve ever seen.

Sanders also directed Howto Train Your Dragon, andLilo & Stitch, both successfulfeatures which Hartman attri-

butes to Sanders ability to con-vey his visual style to his teamof artists and voice actors. Di-recting is all about getting emo-tion out of actors but animationdirectors have to get emotionout of a drawings. Hartmansaid.

    So what might have started

out as drawings of funny pre-historic characters soon beamea moving story about theCroods family, who are forcedto embark on a journey of a life-time when the cave that has al-

ways shielded them from dan-ger is destroyed.

The Despicable Me 2 se-quel marks the return of theformerly villainous Gru (SteveCarell), who becomes a dot-ing father to his three adopteddaughters. The talents he onceemployed for evil are largely

wasted in his new role as a jam-and-jelly maker.

Then there are the storytell-ing talents of Hartmans friendCinco Paul, who teaches impro-

visation at the California highschool attended by Hartmansdaughter. Hes an amazinglytalented guy, Hartman said.

Hes great at telling jokes andhas a fantastic imagination. Hecreated all those yellow guys.He thought of that.

Hartman, who just finishedfilming the ninth season of his

beloved cartoon Farely Odd-parents and the third seasonof T.U.F.F., said its reallyhard to say who will win theOscar this year as all the nom-inated films feature great sto-ries.

Ernest and Celestine is aheartwarming story about anunlikely friendship. It starts

beneath a vill age inhabitedby bears where there exists asubterranean community ofmice who steal from their ur-sine neighbors and particularly

value their teeth. When Celes-tine, an orphaned mouse study-ing dentistry but dreaming of

art, meets a sensi-tive, talented bearnamed Ernest, theinterests they sharelead to a bond be-tween them thatchallenges the tradi-tional enmity betweentheir species.

Then theres Frozen. Its a very old story

about an ice queen thatsbeen updated, Hart-man said.

Sisters Elsa and Annaenjoy an idyllic life in theenchanted kingdom ruled

by their parents until El-sas magical ability to cre-ate ice and snow aroundher proves a threat tothose she loves. Emergingfor her own coronation af-ter several years ofself-imposed iso-lation, Elsa fleesher home in dis-tress when heruncontrollablepowers trans-form the king-dom into a fro-zen realm.

    A stu-dio is al-

ways go-ing to buya movie first,

based on the story. Thats whythis race is going to be close.Theyre all very popular sto-ries.
