We believe the OSC Action Center is a point of access which illuminates the intersection of Portland’s vast strides in responsible and progressive technologies with its environmentally thoughtful, bottom-up, community based citizen’s movements.
The Action Center’s role at the OSC is to tell the story of sustainability in Portland through two lenses — technological innovation and grassroots DIY;it is designed to bridge the gaps between these two visionsof a self-sufficient future.
The main themes of the OSC Action Center are:
1. Empowerment through Information
2. Interactivity and Interconnectedness
3. Adaptivity
1. Empowerment through Information: providing tangible, practical next steps towards a sustainable future.
2. Interactivity and Interconnectedness: The OSC is the place to discover that we’re all in this together! It’s the place to come together, get inspired by one another’s stories, informed by new ideas and information, and step up our engagement towards a shared vision for the future.
3. Adaptivity: As the living building adapts to the world, it’s inhabitants adapt to it. The OSC Action Center is designed to spark action towards adapting our lives and behaviors to the urgent issue of our time: matching our use of natural resources with the earth’s capacity to sustain us.
10 small ideas on how the OSC Action Center will start to come to life are:
1. Including natural sensory elements that bring the natural world into the experience.
2. Interactive, human-scaled opportunities to play and explore the building close up.
3. Looking at innovative solutions through a variety of lenses, providing a diversity of perspectives for interpretation and learning.
4. Creatively interacting with a map of the City of Portland.
5. Temporal meeting spaces invite small enclaves within the greater space.
6. Providing an experience of how the parts create a breathtaking whole.
7. Telling the story of the building in way that delights! Illuminating the technologies that enliven the building.
8. Providing a platform for community portraits to be displayed, generating an on-going archive of local stories.
9. Telling the story of landscape, place, memory and experience.
10. Fluidity of movement and flow throughout the space.
