As early as 1890, Toronto dentists had formed as a group called the Toronto Dental Society. This organization would reinvent themselves in 1906 to “form a society on a basis more suited to the demands of a profession of busy men and women in the most progressive city in a progressive country”. This group continued to thrive over the years and would subsequently become the Toronto Academy of Dentistry on May 8, 1922. They shared office space and staff with the RCDS and the annual fee for membership was $5.00. What was once called Clinic Night was formally changed to Winter Clinic for the meeting on December 8, 1937. The Academy had in fact been holding spring and winter clinics for many years before this, attracting several hundred dentists to each meeting.

As an ODA member who practices in Toronto and belongs to: North Toronto Dental Society, Toronto East Dental Society, Toronto Central Dental Society, or the West Toronto Dental Society you are automatically a member of the Toronto Academy of Dentistry and part of this long heritage.

The Toronto Academy of Dentistry draws from the four Toronto component societies for its Board members and Committee members. The Toronto Academy of Dentistry is the four Toronto component societies and all that it does is on behalf of these societies.

Welcome from the Association of Dental Technologists of Ontario (ADTO)

JASON ROBSON, RDT President

On behalf of the board of directors of the Association of Dental Technologists of Ontario (ADTO), it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Toronto Academy of Dentistry’s 77th Annual Winter Clinic.

As North America’s largest one-day dental convention, the Winter Clinic plays an important role in educating dental professionals about new materials, evolving technologies and the latest techniques in delivering the finest oral health care possible.

The rapid pace of change in the dental technology industry, makes it quite challenging to stay current with the latest advancements, and even more difficult to decide on how best to incorporate these advancements into your practice. It is very important to consult with your Registered Dental Technologist (RDT) and discuss your options before making a decision. It’s a call that can make the difference between a profitable implementation and a costly mistake.

I look forward to meeting you today. Please drop by and visit us at our table to share your thoughts and ideas with us.

Welcome from the Ontario Dental Assistant Association (ODAA)

MARY KAY CHAMBERLIN, CDR, CDTC President

It is a great pleasure to extend a warm welcome to the members of the Ontario Dental Assistants Association (ODAA) to the 77th Winter Clinic.

I hope you and your team members will use this opportunity to embrace the Winter Clinic and all it has to offer. Enjoy the educational lectures and seminars and be sure to take advantage of the trade floor for the latest services and products.

I have always regarded the Winter Clinic as a chance to update ourselves, explore future trends in dentistry, while fostering camaraderie and networking with other members of the dental team.

Be sure to drop by our sponsors table to say hello and sign in to ensure you receive your certification credits.

Welcome from the Ontario Dental Hygienists’ Association (ODHA)

TERRI STRAWN, RRDH President

On behalf of the Ontario Dental Hygienists` Association, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Toronto Academy of Dentistry’s 77th Annual Winter Clinic. The Academy and the 2014 Winter Clinic Committee have brought together a remarkable selection of speakers and learning opportunities for all oral health practitioners to enjoy.

As primary health care professionals, dental hygienists value the principles of lifelong learning and continuous improvement. Winter Clinic provides an opportunity to learn, network and socialize with colleagues.

While visiting the exhibit floor, please drop by the ODHA table to share your thoughts. Enjoy the conference.

Welcome from the Dental Industry Association of Canada (DIAC)

LISA CITTON-BATTEL, President

The Dental Industry Association of Canada, its Board of Directors and Members, would like to congratulate you on your 77th Annual Winter Clinic!

DIAC is proud to be part of your history, and excited to represent the industry in creating a future that meets the common goals of the academy and our members. In particular DIAC shares two priorities with Winter Clinic:

1 Convention Success – The way we connect and learn in the dental industry continues to evolve, and we need to evolve with it. Fostering education and relationships helps the industry thrive. Working together with Winter Clinic, DIAC will continue to ensure we are ready for the future together.

2 Progress against eliminating non compliant product – We must work together to ensure only product that has been safely produced and distributed makes its way into Canadian trade shows and dental offices. We share a common desire to protect Canadian patients and dentists so they never need to question their safety when it comes to dentistry.

DIAC continues to be a growing voice in dentistry and we invite you to visit our booth and those of our member companies. Our members work hard on education, demonstrations and promotions to make the time spent with us informative and valuable for the profession.

On behalf of the Board, I wish everyone a very successful meeting. We look forward to seeing you at our table.

Welcome from North Toronto Component Society

DR. SHELDON COOPER, President

On behalf of the North Toronto Dental Society, welcome to the Toronto Academy of Dentistry’s Annual Winter Clinic. The Winter Clinic is an outstanding venue for continuing education, looking at new products and socializing with other professionals like yourself.

Your North Toronto Dental Society Executive recognizes the value of the annual Winter Clinic and that is why we offer North Toronto dentists a discounted registration fee for this exceptional program. Dentists from North Toronto are welcome to participate at our society meetings, our continuing education evenings and at our annual Honours and Awards Night, held in June. Our Oral Health Initiative, whereby dentists are invited to visit schools to discuss oral health with the students, is a very enjoyable way to present dentistry to our community.

We had two CPR recertification evenings last year and both events were offered with significant subsidies for North Toronto dentists. More programs are anticipated for the future and we welcome your suggestions and input. If you would like more information about the North Toronto Dental Society or would like to attend a meeting, please contact me at [email protected]

PM SESSION

Synopsis As a life-long therapy, oral appliance side-effects are an important concern of the clinical practice of Dental Sleep Medicine. Based on the current literature, short and long-term side-effects will be reviewed. The contra-indications of oral appliance therapy related to Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) will be debated together with the consequences on the TMJ related to oral appliance therapy. Dental and occlusal changes due to the use of CPAP therapy will be presented and the clinical relevance of these dental changes to the patient will be debated in the scope of the treatment of this chronic disease; Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome. Possible new strategies of combination therapy will be presented and the role of multidisciplinary teams will be reviewed.

Learning Objectives 1 Discuss Dental and TMJ Side Effects of Oral Appliance Therapy2 Assess the current literature on Cardiovascular Effects from Oral Appliance Treatment3 Explore the Role of Combination Therapies.

AM SESSION

Synopsis In the last 15 years there has been an increased concern about sleep apnea consequences on overall health status. It is well know that the most efficacious treatment for sleep apnea is nasal CPAP, but because of its cumbersome nature, compliance rates are lower than what physicians would desire. The second best treatment for sleep apnea is oral appliance therapy. There are now many randomized controlled trials focusing on this type of treatment which has a higher compliance rate, and in some characteristics such as control of blood pressure and reducing markers of cardiovascular disease, it has similar efficacy as nasal CPAP. The data from recent studies and treatment outcomes will be discussed.

The session will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the Guidelines on Oral Appliance Therapy paper developed by the Canadian Sleep Society and how to further implement it across the country.

Learning Objectives 1 Understand Current Canadian Guidelines on Oral Appliance Therapy2 Describe the Efficacy of Dental Appliances in the Treatment of OSAS3 Recognize the Role of Titration of Mandibular Positioning in OSA Patients

About the SpeakerDR. LAM is the Dr. Lloyd and Mrs. Kay Chapman Chair in Clinical Sciences in the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Toronto, Head of the Discipline of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and Director of the Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Graduate Program.

Synopsis Image interpretation is performed routinely. For most clinicians, the interpretation of common diseases such as dental caries and periodontal disease is rote; the imaging features have been seen many times over. When an abnormality, perhaps not seen since dental school days is identified, the task can be more challenging. Using case-based examples, this lecture will relate diseases in the jaws with the discrete radiologic features they produce on intra-oral, panoramic and computed tomographic images, thereby creating the vital link that marries the fundamental sciences underpinning disease development with their imaging features.

On June 6th, 2014, the Toronto Academy of Dentistry held its’ 33RD Annual Golf Classic in support of Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital at Wooden Sticks Golf Club. Thanks to enthusiastic support from the attendees, we raised over $30,000 for a very worthy cause.

Since 1982, proceeds from this fundraising event have supported the dental clinic of Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation by enabling the purchase of specialized equipment and important program enhancements.

Next year’s tournament will take place on Friday, June 5, 2015 at ANGUS GLEN, site of the 2015 PAN AM Games’ very first Golf Tournament!!!

We hope you will join us for a wonderful day of golf and an extra-special opportunity to assess, first hand, the challenges that the 2015 PAN AM golfers will face at next year’s games.

Joseph Brian Douglas was born, raised and educated in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where he met his future wife, Valerie Lemon.

Brian began his career in the Dental Industry in 1966 with Duncan Stewart, N.I. Ltd., as a sales representative selling dental equipment and merchandise. In 1975, Brian and Valerie moved to Toronto, Canada where he began his career with Denco, the Dental Supply Company of Canada, as a sales representative. Later, Brian was promoted to Equipment Specialist for the sales department.

Mr. Douglas joined SciCan in 1980 as the sales representative responsible for Ontario and Manitoba. In mid-1980 he was transferred to Vancouver to handle sales in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan, as the company expanded through a combination of aggressive sales in dental equipment, handpieces and merchandise.

Brian and his family returned to Toronto in 1990 upon his promotion to Vice President. Due to the success of the STATIM® autoclave, SciCan strengthened its position and grew from a Canadian distribution company into a major international manufacturer of medical and dental products.

Brian’s strong personal drive is balanced by a trusting relationship with both his employees and distributors; and his expertise in the area of dental equipment and supplies has been a determining strength in the growth of SciCan. His promotion to president in 1996 attests to his accomplishments and capabilities.

Mr. Douglas has served his industry on the Board of Directors of the Dental Industry association of Canada and he is a member of the North York Board of Trade.

Brian, married to Valerie for forty-three years, is blessed with three children, Michaela, Timothy and Clare, son-in-law Michael and two wonderful grandchildren, Katey and Caroline.

Emo, as he prefers to be called, has been involved with a multitude of dental organizations throughout his career, many of which he followed through to the Presidency. He is a founding Chairman of the American College of Dentists Ontario Section and a founding member of the International Dental Study Club. He is the only Canadian to be elected President of the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry. He has been honoured with five Fellowships five Honourary memberships and most recently received the Barnabus Day Award, the highest honour bestowed by the Ontario Dental Association. He is a teacher, a motivator, a mentor and most importantly a student. He still constantly attends continuing education courses, study clubs and conferences.

His long and remarkable career began, as I am sure it will conclude, with determination and hard work. Putting himself through dental

school by way of academic and literary scholarships as well as eight summers of hard foundry work, Emo graduated from the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Toronto in 1956. After a couple of years in general practice he realized his strength was in prosthodontics and he immediately set his sights on this style of

practice. In 1958 he helped found the International Dental Study Club which is still meeting twice each year. By March of 1960, he gave his first essay presentation which would eventually define his passion in dentistry, that being the diagnosis and clinical management of occlusal disharmonies. Over his 52 year career, Emo would cover many topics through essay and projected presentations but the majority would be centred on occlusion.

His enthusiasm and desire to share his wealth of 58 years of clinical practice is intense to say the least. Not only does he continually run his occlusion courses but he is also co-authoring a text with Dr. Chiappone on the physiology of occlusion and occlusal adjustment of the natural dentition. And if that was not enough, he still practices prosthodontics on a part-time basis.

Emo’s dedication to the profession is unwavering. He is and always has been willing to take young dentists under his wing and help shape their careers through example. He has affected the careers of many, not only through his clinical expertise but more so by his attitude and demeanor in a profession that is surrounded by distractions and instabilities. He bases his decisions on clinical experience and evidence based research. He is well read, well educated and a seasoned veteran in all aspects of prosthodontic dentistry.

Some might ask, ‘Why does he still do all this at 82 years of age?’ The answer is simple…he loves what he does but more importantly, he has a strong desire to disseminate what he has come to know is the basis of good clinical dentistry. He is concerned for the future of our profession because of the very limited amount of time given to the teaching of occlusion in the dental schools today. During a recent interview for an upcoming newsletter, Emo was quoted as saying “The study of occlusion of the natural dentition is one of the most basic and important studies that is required of all dentists.”

Teaching better dentistry is at the forefront of all we do. It permeates our people, and it characterizes our relationships with our customers. Call us with any product or technique question, and a friendly technical sales representative will walk you through a solution. Read any communication from us – a flyer, a catalogue, a newsletter, a technique or product article – and you’ll find clinically proven techniques and tips. At tradeshows, you can participate in the demonstration of how a product solves a clinical challenge. At seminars and hands-on courses, you’ll find at the helm, well-respected clinicians who share our vision of better dentistry.
