Analyn H. Salivio, RN, MANPresident, ORNAP (2012-2013)

President’s CornerOur loyalty in the practice of perioperative nursing has aided us in our drive

to improve our performance in delivering safe and giving quality patient care. We imagine our society as being an organization of competent and dynamic perioperative nurses committed to innovations and providing optimum services locally and internationally.

As we go along, ORNAP will be holding a Search for the Outstanding and Adoptable Research Studies (SOARS) in the Operating Room. The following are the objectives:

1. Display the various research studies conducted by different groups in the improvement of Operating Room Nursing.

2. Exhibit competency in using tools and procedures in solving problems encountered in the Operating Room scenario.

3. Provide means of recognition to outstanding research projects that addresses encountered in the Operating Room challenges.

This learning will encourage our perioperative nurses from different institutions to share their resources, take advantage of the rich academic environment and promote interdisciplinary, intra- and cross-institute collaborations. This research will serve to promote the acquisition of knowledge and the development of a critically analytic mind of our participants to which they could greatly use in performing their duties.

ORNAP is dedicated to actively promote its advocacy. We work towards a globally competitive environment in improving patient care by promoting safe surgery and an evidence-based best practice standard through research and education with the collaboration of our member organizations. In its commitment to actively partake in the evolution of the globally

competitive field of nursing, our organization has made a pioneer leap. And it is my firm belief that in promoting and enhancing nursing research programs, we as perioperative nurses would not only be competitive but moreso

empowered to make our own mark.In line with this, the ORNAP-PCS

had already launched and printed a book called manual for OPERATING ROOM Recommended Nursing Practices. This manual aims to help all perioperative nurses in the Philippines to provide excellent and quality service regardless of their status in life. It was not long ago that the ORNAP organized this research program however it was only early this year that it became part of my objective. The purpose of which is to help and sustain the ability of each operating room nurse to shine and become brilliant in their respective career.

CARDIOVASCULAR NURSING...

THE NEXT LEVELCharles Wayne N. Andino, RN

The Philipine Heart Center, an global leader in provding the best quality care for cardiovascular patients, brings the practice of cardiovascular nursing into another step higher. The cardiovascular nurse practitioner nurse program aims to bring out the best in our nurses. The CVNP program is a 6 month didactic and hands on training offered to our senior nurses who have managed to finish its pre-requisite courses. Our participants in this course will undergo extensive training tackling the different cases in the field of cardiovascular practice. We are taught and trained to correlate extensive nursing assessment, management, prevention, and rehabilitation of different cases as a nurse practitioner. Gone are the bedside nurse roles for the participants of this course because a the nurse clinician role will now take effect. The Nurse Clinician will now manage the patients in a extensive holistic manner. The management will start upon admission involving the patient, the family, and all the members of the healthcare team.

The products of this program will then be given the title nurse clinicians, the next best level for practising nurses. The course is presently offered in-house and hopefully soon will be offered to all the institutions who provide the same quality care for our Filipino Cardivqscular patients.

Impact of Infection Control in Design and Construction of an Operating Room

PSUPT Michelle A. Arban, RN, MGN, MAN

Optimizing the operating room environment is necessary to minimize infection. The commitment of time and resources to design and construction of an Operating Room can provide value in creating larger and more aesthetically-pleasing facilities, which may help attract patients, retain employees and accommodate new equipment. One value that may be under-recognized is the ability of design and construction choices to influence infection control. Approximately five percent of all healthcare-acquired infections are due to construction within the healthcare facility, according to study.

Hospital institutions choose for

renovations, expansions or new buildings can significantly impact the organizations’ ability to prevent and control infections. For example, copper is safer than stainless steel because superbugs cannot live in any scratches, as they do with stainless steel, according to Mr. Lee, an architect. One recent study found antimicrobial copper surfaces in ICU reduced the amount of bacteria by 97 percent and resulted in a 41 percent reduction in hospital-acquired infection rates. Although copper is not appropriate for an operating room, it can be used as countertops, sink areas and other areas outside the OR.

We should consider materials designed to facilitate cleaning of electronics. For example, there are keyboards that can completely detach from equipment and

computers and that these keyboards can be put in an autoclave for sterilization. So many germs and bacteria are transmitted by hands, so for this reason, hospitals should be looking at these keyboards.

Design of an Operating Room can also aid infection control efforts by making infection control resources easily accessible. It is important that the architect and designer work together to plan medical space that supports and encourages frequent hand washing. Besides strategic placement of hand sanitizers, the location and number of sinks may affect infection control. Too often sinks are put back in corners and not where the surgeons want to go to wash their hands, so the location of sinks is extremely important.

Heal, Love, Live.Davao City – Conducted the much awaited 13th Annual Regional and Scientific Meeting with the theme of, “Perioperative Nurses: Heal, Love, Live” at Waterfront Hotel last November 24, 2012. The event started off with a Eucharistic Mass celebration to bring glory to our dearest God who made this event possible and for thanking Him for all the blessings this chapter has received. Followed with the opening ceremony where the processional of officers, advisers and guests paid its way.

Rean John Baldoza, RN, gave his welcoming speech and succeeded by Monina Editha Sayman, RN, giving recognition to the delegates from different parts of Mindanao.

We were very much privileged to have, Corazon B. Dela Peṅa, RN, PhD, our keynote speaker who gave her insightful speech.

There were also various guests and speakers who were present in this event to share their updates and knowledge to our perioperative nurses. To begin with our ORNAP National President, Analyn Salivio, RN, MAN, who shared her National President’s Report to update us of the national chapter’s activities and goals. Mrs. Victoria D. Villanueva, RN, talked about Infection Control in the Operating Room in which most of the attendees can relate to. While an inspiring and enlightening message was given by Rev. Fr. Pachomius Ma. San Juan, OSB, a Benedictine monk from the Monastery of the Transfiguration. On the other hand, our local renowned Hepatobiliary and Laparoscopic Surgeon, Walter S. Batucan, MD, DPBS, FPSGS, FPALES, shared his knowledge expertise about Minimal Invasive Techniques. And last but not the least, Linell G. Malimbag, RN, PhD, empowered us with her topic about Leadership in the Perioperative Setting.

Cristina Juarez, RN, ORNAP Davao’s Nomelec Chairman presented the nominees as well as presented the new set of Davao officers for the year 2013. Recognition and distribution of plaques to all the sponsors followed for aiding us in this endeavor.

Once again this event came to success with the support of our guests, speakers, sponsors and delegates. ORNAP Davao is very much grateful to all of you!

Moderate sedation is an exciting field for nurses. As newer, safer sedation medications become available, nurses will be asked to provide assistance for patients given moderate sedation on an increasingly frequent basis. Recognition of the goals and objectives of moderate sedation is the first step in providing safe care. Medication administration, knowledge of pharmacologic principles and providing patient safety should be the most important aspects of nursing care delivery. Recognition of the nuances of care delivery to specific patient populations must not be overlooked. If these aspects are adhered to throughout moderate sedation, the patient will be provided with safe care before, during and after sedation.

As nurses, we should check the following when preparing patient for

moderate sedation.1. Patient Identifier

• Patient’s complete name (First, Middle name and Surname)

• Patient’s complete Birthday (Month, day and year)

• Patient Pin number2. Patient’s informed consent must

be properly filled-up prior to administration of medicine.

3. Patient’s Physical history including:• Vital signs• Oxygen Saturation• Weight• Airway status• Appropriate fasting interval• Aspiration Risk factors• Cardiac, Pulmonary and

neurologic systems• Mental status and level of

consciousness• Appropriate LAB tests• ASA status

4. Completeness of needed medical equipmenta. Cardiac monitor with

defibrillatorb. Pulse Oximeterc. Suction Machined. Medication for sedation and

reversal of effect.e. Blood pressure determination

Norton (1998) defined learning as a process of understanding, clarifying, and applying the meaning of the knowledge acquired. To contribute to this process, the ORNAP continues to conduct a seminar that would help to maintain the excellence in peri-operative nursing practice. As a matter of fact, a lot of seminars were conducted by the organization and to emphasize one a seminar entitled “TRENDS ON INFECTION CONTROL IN PERI-OPERATIVE PRACTICE’’ was conducted last October 27, 2012 at Our Lady of Fatima University, Valenzuela City. This program is a series and to be conducted at regional as one of the strategies to reach out to all members. Furthermore, it is an effort to cascade the program of the association likewise updating the members with the programs, plans and on-going projects and activities that the association is undertaking. Moreover, this endeavor would be an instrument in order to give back to the members for their continuous support in the organization and also to address the issues and concerns of the peri-operative practitioners in

dealing with infection control and standard in the Operating Room. Indeed, this program helps to enhance and update the infection control practices of the peri-operative healthcare practitioners, thus promoting patient safety and to achieve quality healthcare.

As a contributor, to the learning process of the members all throughout the country, the ORNAP assures that the quality of the seminars are taken into consideration. This is evidenced by the accreditation of the Professional Regulation Commission (RRC) – Board of Nursing (BON) as Continuing Professional Education (CPE) provider.

To standardize the prestige accreditation status the national chapter encourages the local chapters to apply their seminars and convention for units accredited by the PRC-BON. Among the local chapters who were applied for CPE units were: Leyte -convention, Iloilo seminar update, Davao -convention and Cagayan Valley- convention.
