This year, when I set out to document the Flagler County and Ormond Beach
communities for this section, I wanted to focus on what the title of this section has been for the last three years: “Celebrate America.”
My goal was to show how people in our local communities celebrate what makes our coun-try and counties unique.
The opening scene takes you to Ormond-by-the-Sea, where many residents and visitors take advantage of the cool ocean breeze and early sunrises for shore fishing. Throughout the section you will be taken to a youth baseball tournament, the wedding of a U.S. Army captain, and a party to watch a USA World Cup game in Palm Coast. In the midst of the World Cup, I
thought it only proper to docu-ment how so many people are rallying behind our team and wearing their red, white and blue with pride.
The story picks back up in Bunnell, at Cowart Ranch and Farms, where families can go spend time together and cel-ebrate the fruitful farmland by picking blueberries. The theme of agriculture continues with
scenes from the Ormond Beach Farmers’ market. Finally, the photo essay closes back at the beach with the celebration of children and water.
As you view these images, re-member all there is to celebrate in life. Even in hard times, and maybe especially in hard times, it’s important to remember the joys. Take time to celebrate!

Q.A. This is a not-so-uncommon problem. Many dogs
are fearful of loud noises from fireworks to motorcycles, thunderstorms, gunfire and popping balloons. These noise phobias can result in very subtle behavior such as a tucked tail and dropped ears with panting, to very disturbing behaviors such as hiding, digging, chewing doors, walls and furniture, house soiling and tremors. Most dogs suffer from something in the middle. The best thing is to be prepared. Being home with your pet during these events can be helpful to them even though consoling them during their fear is often of little benefit. Remedies such as the “Thunder-shirt” can be useful to place on your pet during storms but also fireworks. Keeping them indoors, not allowing them to see the flashes and feel the concussion may help. Allowing them access to shelter or their “safe place”, keeping the TV or radio on, and remaining calm yourself may all help. If your pet suffers with severe symptoms, contact your veterinarian about the use of medication. Anti-anxiety drugs are often prescribed by veterinarians to be administered prior to the stimulus. This can result in a much more tolerant experience for the pet although often is accompanied by sedation. Noise phobia is a real disorder. Often worsening with age. No matter what you observe, do not medicate your pet without consulting with your veterinarian first. Happy Independence Day!
