As a nurse for 32 years and a nurse practitioner since 2015, Michelle has seen breast cancer’s effects up close and knew much about it when it became personal—with her own diagnosis on October 1st, 2010. She knew the statistics that breast cancer hit 1 in 8 women and rather than think, “Why me?” she thought, “Why not me?” “I did things right. I was fit. I ate healthily. I enjoyed an occasional cocktail. But it happens. I have many friends now who’ve been through this, they did things right. I have a friend who is a personal trainer with no body fat who just got diagnosed at 42. I know enough about cancer to know it’s not very selective.” Michelle and her husband have actively supported community breast cancer events and fundraisers over the last 20 years. She even participated in a walk just a week aſter her mastectomy—with a drain in! Her goal, in this 20th year, is to bring more people into the fold and engage those who haven’t been involved. She’s also passionate about helping breast cancer patients understand all of their options for treatment and care. She wants to see the American Cancer Society’s services even more utilized; and, as her cancer was detected during a routine mammogram, she is a big supporter of free or inexpensive screenings during the month of October. To achieve her goal and further her passion, Michelle is contemplating two special events to raise awareness and funds. The first, geared towards men, is a Beer, Barbecue and Brotox (Botox for dudes) event. The second is a 20 for 20 event that would showcase everything from the types of implants and reconstruction available, to solutions like Latisse, good wigs, makeup tips and prosthesis options. It will also feature her husband speaking on the unique scenario—when your wife is the cancer patient and you’re the surgeon. As for being Orlando Strides’ 2016 chair, honoring our 20th year, and aiming for the goal of raising $1 million, Michelle humanly feels it’s exciting and daunting. “I want to do well. It seems to me that the Orlando Strides Walk is a well-oiled machine. I have such a good team behind me, if I fall at times, other’s will be there to pick me up. I’m going to get my contacts together with Orlando Strides contacts and it’s going to work.” Pink Premier Sponsor June Team Challenge Win 4 Universal one-day pass tickets! We have a lot of new born, baby and adult flamingos that need a home NOW. So many, in fact, that when the word got out about our annual adoption program many left the crowded adoption agency and have been hiding in our backyard. Our Koi fish are getting a little anxious with all these flamingos looking at them like food. They are all getting along right now, but we need your help now in finding them permanent homes as soon as possible.

As in previous years, 100% of the flamingo adoption fee is donated to the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and with each adoption you get raffle tickets for our 11th Annual Breast Cancer Fund Raiser held the end of July. For those of you that want to participate in the fund raiser but not raise the flamingo…you can still adopt one. Get your raffle tickets and we will find a home for the flamingo. You do not have to be present to win any of the raffle prizes.

Adoption Fees:

$20 2 New Borns shown coming out of shell above (plus 30 raffle tickets)

$20 1 Deep Pink Baby (plus 30 raffle tickets)

$40 1 Larger Pink Adult (plus 60 raffle tickets)
