Overcoming bad splitBy Barry Rigal

David McLellan liked his chances when he sawdummy on this deal from the second session of theBlue Ribbon Pairs. However, he had heard thedouble, and he knew that he might run into someproblems, especially in the trump suit.Board 3 ♠ A 8 6 2Dlr: South ♥ A 7 6 5Vul: E-W ♦ A Q

West led the ♥8 to David McLellan’s king, andMcLellan crossed to the ♥A and ruffed a heart. Thefinesse to the ♦Q was successful, and Treblecashed the ♦A before ruffing dummy’s last heartwith the queen. But West overruffed with the king.

The overruff was fatal. West exited with adiamond for the ruff and discard. Declarer ruffedlow in dummy and advanced the ♠J to find theexpected bad news. He led a club and Westcorrectly discarded rather than ruff a loser.McLellan won the ace in dummy and exited with aclub. In the three-card ending, dummy had ♠A-8-6over West’s ♠10-9-7. When East led a plain card,West ruffed with the 9 and dummy underruffed.West was endplayed – he had to give declarer thelast two tricks. Making the spade game despite the5-0 trump break.

This deal from the Blue Ribbon Pairs showshow important it is to count and to pay attention tothe information provided. The hero of the piece isBill Pollack, playing with Mark Cohen.

Pollack’s 3♣ bid showed some values, butCohen couldn’t get too excited opposite a passedhand.

South started with a low heart to North’s ace,and there would be no story if North had played adiamond – the defenders would have taken all thetricks due them. North could not see all the cards, however, so he made the reasonable return of a lowspade. Pollack took full advantage, inserting the♠Q. He then took a club finesse. In with the ♣K,North had another chance to hold declarer to ninetricks with a diamond switch, but he continued witha spade to Pollack’s ace. Pollack played the ♣J, aclub to the ace, cashed the ♥K then ruffed a spadeto hand.

With the trumps drawn and spades eliminated,Pollack reviewed the information he had to decidewhat to do about diamonds.

North had shown up with the ♥A, the ♠K andthe ♣K – and he was a passed hand. There was noway he could have the ♦K.

That made it easy for Pollack to decide what todo. He played the ♥J from hand, and when Southcovered, Pollack discarded a low diamond fromdummy. South was now on lead with the choice ofleading away from his ♦K or giving Pollack a ruff-sluff. Either way, Pollack had his 10th trick – andyou know how important those overtricks can be atmatchpoints.

New Life MastersGeorge Delp of Gainesville GA needed only

.59 gold points to become a Life Master. In theconsolation round of Bracket 8 of the ShoppingSeason Compact KO, he managed 1.57 to go overthe top. He was playing with his wife, April. Theirteammates were Leon and Patricia Neuzerling ofVenice FL.

Larry Chegwidden of Clearwater FL came toOrlando needing only .66 gold points to become aLife Master. It was the eighth straight tournamenthe has attended needing just that fraction for hisgold card. In the Compact KO on Saturday, heoverdid it, earning 2.72 gold to get that letter at thefront of his player number. Chegwidden wasplaying with Doris Houdesheldt of St. PetersburgFL. Their teammates were Tony and Joan Viidik ofWaterloo ON.

They were second in the National 99er Pairs:Kim and Kathy Gillman

the ACBL and former treasurer of the World BridgeFederation, went over the 5000-point markyesterday and is now a Diamond Life Master. Atpresent he is the District 1 representative to theACBL Board of Directors.

American representative. The bottom line, Rona says, is to attract more

attention from the press for bridge and to convincethe news media that “bridge is not a minor sport buta big one that is played by millions of people aroundthe world.

Rona says he is optimistic that the ACBL and theEBL can work together to promote bridge. “We havethe same objectives,” he says.

The current holders of the European ChampionsCup are the team sponsored by the prestigious tennisClub from Rome – Parioli. Rona was also in Orlandoto help promote the 2nd European Open BridgeChampionship, scheduled for June 18 to July 2 inTenerife, Canary Islands.

The first European championship open to allcomers – Americans won two major events – was inMenton on the French Riviera in the summer of 2003.

Rona is careful to note that all playing facilitieson Tenerife are completely air conditioned, so nomatter what the weather, players will compete incomfort. In Menton in 2003, the playing facility didnot have air conditioning, and there was an unusualheat wave in Europe during that time that madeplaying conditions difficult.

Tenerife, Rona says, is a “fantastic venue, and theweather is always like spring.”

Hotels and restaurants are inexpensive, Ronasays. “We had the European championships there twoyears ago and the players loved it.”

All events are transnational – players may befrom any country – and there are no restrictions onthe number of players from particular countries.

Rona notes that there is now a direct flight toTenerife from Miami

The schedule of events, he says, is the same as inMenton – Mixed Teams, Mixed Pairs, Open,Women’s and Senior Teams and Open, Women’s andSenior Pairs, plus side games every day. The programincludes opening and closing ceremonies.

King still workingon major pro tour

Nearing the end of the fourth year of his effortsto promote cash-prize bridge, Larry King still hashis eye on a major sponsor for a pro tour that hebelieves will put bridge on the national map. Kingbelieves it’s only a matter of time before it happens.

“We were close to getting a major sponsor thisyear,” he says, “but the company suffered a majorfinancial reverse and it didn’t work out.”

King envisions a professional tour much likethe women’s tennis circuit he put on the mapdecades ago. As he sees it, there would be weeklycontests, played as individuals, with the winnereach week earning $50,000 to $100,000.

That kind of competition could give bridge thekind of credibility that poker is currently enjoying.

All his work with the BPT – Prize MoneyBridge has been done with that goal in mind.

It’s been slow going so far, Kingacknowledges, but he isn’t discouraged, in partbecause the games are still growing.

In the first year, BPT put on four events. Therewere six in the second year, 10 in the third year, andwhen the circuit is complete in 2004, there willhave been 23 different events awarding about$70,000 in prizes.

King wants what he terms “recreational” cashprize events to continue growing to attract theattention of potential sponsors for the biggertournament.

A major sponsor, King says, “is out there.”Despite the disappointment of losing out on thealmost-committed sponsor this year, King says,“I’ve got other irons in the fire, and if one of themcomes through it will change the face of bridge.”

1 + 1 = 50This deal from the first qualifying session of

the Blue Ribbon Pairs was, in the consideredopinion of Robert Levin, a beauty to behold. On thesurface, it seems to be a rather mundane partscorethat failed. There was much more to it than that, however, and the result helped Levin and SteveWeinstein to second place in the event.

Levin didn’t want to make a negative doublewith the South hand because he had so much inhearts, and he was void in his partner’s suit.

When 3♣ came back around to him, however,Levin was willing to bid 3♠ because he could drawthe inference from the bidding that his partneralmost certainly had four of them. “I figured it wasabout 90% that he had four spades,” Levin said. Forone thing, considering his own length in clubs,Levin was sure that Weinstein was short in that suit.It was also unlikely, considering that he and Easthad at least 10 hearts, that Weinstein had very manyof that suit. That left room in the North hand fordiamonds and spades.

Levin was correct, of course. That wasinference No. 1, the first “1” of the equation in theheadline.

The auction was over and now it wasWeinstein’s turn to do some thinking. He had tofigure out how Levin could infer that he, Weinstein, held four spades. With due consideration, a savvyplayer like Weinstein was sure to work it out.Weinstein reasoned that Levin could infer spadelength in the other hand only if he, Levin, waslooking at length in clubs and hearts, meaningLevin was very short in diamonds.

Weinstein’s inference about Levin’s inference –the “1 + 1” – led him to find the best opening lead:the ♦9, suit preference for spades. Declarer couldhave made the contract by inserting the ♦10 at trickone – he should have been working on his owninferences – but he went up with the ace. Levinruffed and made the killing return of a low spade.Declarer had to go up with the ace or Weinsteinwould win and give his partner another diamondruff, with the ♥A to come. Declarer won the ♠Aand played the ♣Q to the king and ace. He couldpull trumps and take a diamond finesse, but he hadno fast entry back to hand to take a second one.West tried to sneak a heart past Levin, but Levinwent up with the ace and returned a spade. Thedefense collected a diamond ruff, one heart and twospade tricks for plus 50, the last part of theequation. So there you have it: 1 inference plus 1inference equals plus 50. Easy!

Facts: According to the table director, theplayers at the table agreed that there was a break intempo of approximately 30 seconds before Westbid 5♣.

Director’s Ruling: The director ruled thatpassing was not a logical alternative for East. Therefore, there could be no adjustment under Law12.

The Appeal: North-South appealed on thegrounds that passing 5♣ was a logical alternativeand should have been the adjusted result on theboard..

The Decision: The case was not screened andEast-West could not be located to be notified of theexistence of the appeal. The screening director waseven unable to identify the parties sitting East-West. The table director reported that East made nostatements as to their methods while West said thatthe pass of 3♥ showed some values, but West wasunsure about whether 4♣ was forcing.

The committee found that there was a break intempo. The break in tempo did conveyunauthorized information. The UI did suggestbidding 6♣. The committee reasoned that the breakin tempo certainly did not suggest that West’schoice was between bidding and passing; itreflected West’s uncertainty about what to bid. Thecommittee decided that since most of the biddingoptions other than 5♣ suggested a greaterlikelihood of the success of a 6♣ bid by East, 6♣was demonstrably suggested by the break in tempo.

The committee believed that while passingwould likely not be a good matchpoint result –bidding on in a BAM was also problematic. Therefore, the committee found that pass was alogical alternative to bidding 6♣ and it reverted thecontract to 5♣, making six for plus 420 for East-West.

Cohen quickly pointed out that SamiKehela is not a Canadian product – he was born inBaghdad. “Sheardown was one of the greatestplayers in the Thirties, Forties and Fifties. He wasbrilliant. He also was a fine teacher, and he was amentor to many of Canada’s leading players.”

Cohen recalled kibitzing Sheardown in aSpingold in 1947. “He played with two women aspartners, Charlotte Sidway and MildredCunningham. He was absolutely imperturbable. Nomatter what happened, he never made a wrong bid, never made a wrong play. His performance wasawe-inspiring.”

Sheardown represented Canada in twoOlympiads – 1960 and 1968. He won twoChicagos, two Spingolds, the Life Master Pairs andthe Fishbein Trophy plus many other titles back inthe early years of contract bridge.

she told Thomas, “You’re the only person I’d dothis for.”

Besides learning from Thomas, Rapahelsonsaid, she has had the experience of her life.

For starters, she said, “I can say only wonderfulthings about the hotel. They have dealt withproblems with humor, competence and eagerness.”

She said she is especially thankful to Bill Hurstof the hotel staff for providing her a special parkingpass so that she could get in and out quickly. Thathas been important, Raphaelson said, because shehas had to leave the playing site regularly duringthe tournament.

Raphaelson also had high praise for thetournament’s legion of volunteers. “Every one ofthem has gone out of their way to accommodatepeople.”

She also said that Jeff Johnston of ACBLMeeting Services has been invaluable. “Whateverhe makes,” she said, “it isn’t enough.”

Raphaelson also mentioned her husband,Elliott, “who has been so patient and supportive.”

Having played several sessions, Raphaelsonhas had considerable interaction with players.“Everyone has told me how much they’ve enjoyedthe tournament and that they can’t wait to comeback,” she said.

Compared to Thomas, Raphaelson said, “I’veput in minimum work, but everything I did wasworth the effort. It’s been a wonderful experience.”

New Life MasterDan Augustyn of Lincoln NE earned his gold

card yesterday in the Compact Knockouts.

Dorothy Truscott’s bookIt took Dorothy Truscott 30 years to produce

her newest book, and it isn’t about bridge. Thework required mountains of research.

The title is “Hell Gate.” It’s the story of thefamily that settled Harlem as part of the Dutchcolony that became New York.

106 Platinumboards

Gene Simpson of San Rafael CA believes heset a record Friday when he played the first 34boards of the Senior Knockout Teams final. Thenhe sat down for 28 boards of the North AmericanSwiss. Next came the last 30 boards of the SeniorKOs. Then he went back to the Swiss and played 14boards. Add it up - it’s 106 deals.

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERS

Table Talk Bridge Cartoonscopyright Jude Goodwin

Remembering AliceAlice Kinningham, who is in charge of the

Intermediate/Newcomer program for the NABC,relates that a married couple approached her duringthe Fall NABC to remind her of something thatinvolved the three of them at the 2003 SpringNABC in Philadelphia.

The two, Carl and Anita Gutschick of ArnoldMD, were playing in a knockout teams when theylearned that Kinningham was looking for them.“Are you Carl and Anita?” Kinningham askedwhen she found their table.

“Maybe,” they said with trepidation. They hadplayed in an I/N game and were fearful they haddone something wrong.

“Well,” said Kinningham, “you won and youforgot your trophies.” With that, Kinninghampresented the trophies to the couple, advising themthat they should leave the hardware on the table therest of the game “for intimidation value.”

In Orlando, the couple told Kinningham theywere so relieved when they found out they weren’tin trouble that “we’ll never forget you.”

West North East South2♣

Pass 2♦ (1) Pass 2NT (2)Pass 3NT (3) All Pass

(1) Played as “waiting” to an artificial 2♣opening bid. Some use 2♦ as a positive responsereserving a 2♥ response to show a terrible, terriblehand (no ace or king and no more than 4 high-cardpoints).

(2) 22-24 HCP but some play it 23-24.(3) Opting not to use Stayman with this

distribution, usually the right thing to do.West leads the ♥2. You (South) are declarer;

plan the play.Play low from dummy at trick one, hoping that

West has led from a Q-10-x-x or K-10-x-xcombination. If so, East will have to play an honorto prevent your 9 from winning a trick.

If East plays an honor, you should win the acebecause the jack in dummy will likely provide youwith a second trick.

No such luck. East plays the ♥10. It should benoted that when partner leads low, dummy has anhonor card in the suit and you have both a higherand a lower honor in that suit, you should play thelower honor if dummy plays low.

The most common positions are this one andwhen dummy has Q-x-x and you have the K-10 orthe A-10 with almost any length. Another commonposition is when dummy has the king and you havethe A-J or the A-10, again with almost any length.

Nothing is 100% in this game but the normalplay is the lower honor when dummy plays low.Just do it. You have no idea how many thousands oftricks are lost each hour by misguided third-handplayers who play “third hand” high when theyshould be inserting the lower honor. No idea.

Back to the play: If East plays the ♥10 at trickone, you are basically reduced to needing five clubtricks to make your contract. Looks easy enoughwith the A-K-Q between the two hands, not tomention the 10.

There is, however, a catch. Look at the way theclubs are actually divided. Say you lead a club tothe ace and a club to the king. You see West showout but the lead is in your hand and you can’t get todummy with a crowbar to take the marked finesseagainst East’s remaining J-x.

The solution: start with a high honor from thelong side, say the king, and then cross to dummywith the ace. Now you are in dummy and can leadlow, taking the marked finesse.

Points to remember:1. As third hand, when holding a higher and a

lower honor than dummy, play the lower honor ifdummy plays low.

2. When attacking a long suit that looks like: A-Q-10-x (x) facing K-x-x, A-K-10-x (x) facing Q-x-x or K-Q-10-x (x) facing A-x-x, start with a highhonor and then cross to the remaining honor-doubleton.

With similar looking holdings such as: A-K-9-x (x) facing Q-x-x, A-Q-9-x (x) facing K-x-x orK–Q-9-x (x) facing A-x-x, play the same. If yourleft-hand opponent has a singleton 10 or jack, youwill be in the proper hand to take a marked finesseby leading low to the 9.

‘Judge Judy’ Cotterman popular withnewcomer crowd

Judy Cotterman remembers herintroduction to tournament directing very well. Her husband, David, already a TD, wasretaking the director’s course during the 1991Fall NABC in Indianapolis.

Judy was interested and thought she wouldenjoy sitting in on the class. When she arrivedfor the first session, TDs Betty Bratcher andEdith McMullin were there. “You’re not sittingin,” they told Judy. “You’re taking the course.”

From there, Cotterman went home toKokomo IN and started a club game, now in its 12th year. In Orlando, she is in charge of the I/Nspeaker program.

Cotterman has been involved with bridge nearly all her life. All her family played. Her motherhad six sisters and two brothers, and all but one sister were bridge players. After she and Davidwere married, they often played foursomes with their parents. The two have been married 41

years. Both were born and raised in Kokomo. After Cotterman became a tournament

director, she got an assignment to work asectional in Kokomo, giving her double duty –she was the tournament chairman as well.

Cotterman loves working with the newplayers – “I call them all my kids.”

At the annual Houston regional, Cottermanhas been running the I/N games there for years.“They call the I/N program Judy-land,” she says,“and the new players have taken to calling meJudge Judy.”

Cotterman enjoys seeing the new playersprogress and move into the open games, and sheloves hearing about their successes. At the 2003Summer NABC in Long Beach, she and Davidwere having dinner on their 40th weddinganniversary when they discovered that a group ofher former I/N players had bought their dinnerout of appreciation for all she had done for them.

She wouldn’t do the directing if David wasn’tdoing it, too, and the bottom line is simple forher: “I have a lot of fun.”

Lucky winnerMuriel Tamura of Portland OR won the drawing in

the Intermediate/Newcomer game for a bridge library, including copies of books autographed by famousauthors. The program began at the 2002 Spring NABC inHouston.

Cultivate good habitsAs new players, it is important to develop good

habits and follow proper etiquette at the table. When you arrive at a table, or when new opponentscome to your table, stop your conversation andgreet them.

When polling players to find what heir biggestbridge pet peeve is, slow play was unequivocallythe winner.

You are given seven and a half minutes perboard, which should be plenty of time for even thetoughest hands.

Bidding too fast or thinking too long beforebidding could send unauthorized messages to yourpartner. If you pass too quickly, it seems that youhave no interest in this deal. If you pause for a longtime, you probably have choices to make and can’tdecide which is the best action. Even if you havenothing to think about after the jump, study yourhand for 10 seconds and don’t show disinterestduring the pause.
