Letter Home to Parents for E.B. White’s Stuart Little (1945)

Dear Parent/Guardian: This month Oriole Lane will embark on a special project, an all school book club called One School, One Book. Last year we read Frindle, and this year every family will receive a copy of E.B. White’s Stuart Little. Please read one chapter each night at home over the next three weeks. I am personally asking you to make the time, so your family can participate in this special activity. Reading aloud at home is valuable, because it better prepares your child to be an effective reader. In addition it is also a fun, worthwhile family activity. With the One School, One Book program, we aim to build a community of readers at our school. Everyone - students, parents, teachers, and administrative staff - will participate! Thank you to the PTO for their generous support in purchasing over 300 books for our students and staff. Your child received his/her copy of Stuart Little at a special school-wide assembly on Monday introducing the program and the book. You should follow the tailored reading schedule your child received, so that you can keep up at home. Generally you will be asked to read one chapter per night – about 15 minutes per night. In school, your child will be invited to answer daily trivia questions to encourage and reward attentive, aggressive listening. You will soon find that your child will take pride in knowing and anticipating the details of the story. In class, there may be various activities that discuss or explore the book. You will want to make sure your family keeps up so your child stays included. Throughout the month, everyone will be talking about Stuart Little! One School, One Book is a novel program in that children at all grade levels read and listen to the same book. Strange or daring as that seems, it actually makes sound educational sense. Reading professionals recommend reading material out loud that is beyond a child’s own reading level. We also believe that you can and should continue reading chapter books with your older children, even when they are able to read by themselves. We have selected a title that can be followed, understood and enjoyed by younger students, but that will still captivate and stimulate older children. Good luck! I hope to talk with both you and your students sometime this month about Stuart, his family, his adventures and his view of the world. When a whole school reads a book, there’s a lot to talk about! With your help, we can build a community of readers at Oriole Lane. Sincerely, Mary Jo Tye

The Steps to Enroll in Beginning Band:

1. Attend the 5th grade band performance at your school on Wednesday, April 29th. This is your chance to see and hear all of the different instruments in the band! 2. Complete the green Instrument Selection Sheet. (These will be handed out after the performance and will be available from your classroom teachers). You should choose up to three instruments you are interested in playing. Turn your slip into your school office by Friday May 8th. 3. Wait for the band directors to come to your classroom to start the instrument fitting process – you MUST turn in a green Instrument Selection Sheet in order to try the instruments! (Wilson – Monday, May 18, Oriole Lane – Tuesday, May 19, & Donges Bay – Wednesday, May 20) 4. Try out instruments with the band directors and arrive at recommendations. Take your sheet home and discuss the findings with your parents. 5. Attend the Band Registration Meeting on Wednesday, May 20th at 7pm in the Lakeshore Cafeteria. The band directors will be there to give an overview of the program, answer any questions you may have, and representatives from the area music stores will be available to get you started with your instrument rental. 6. Decide on your rental vendor and secure an instrument. Please don’t purchase any instrument without proper guidance - have any used instruments you are considering for purchase taken to a music repair professional to make sure they are in good working condition. 7. Register for the appropriate summer band class through the M-T Recreation department. While not a requirement, starting an instrument in the summer before 5th grade is highly recommended! 8. Come to the first day of summer band where your rental instrument will be waiting for you! It will be delivered directly to Steffen Middle School so that reeds/instruments will not be accidentally broken and bad habits will not be developed without proper instruction. If you are not able to register for summer band, please send an e-mail to [email protected] so that I will know you still plan on enrolling for the start of the school year and I will have you on the roster. 9. Come to the first day of before school band in the fall! Wilson students have band on Monday & Wednesday mornings at Steffen Middle School in the band room. Donges Bay and Oriole Lane students have band on Tuesday & Thursday mornings at Lake Shore Middle School in the band room. Rehearsals are from 8:00-8:45am. The first day of Band for Donges Bay/Oriole Lane students is Tuesday, September 8th. The first day of Band for Wilson students is Wednesday, September 9th.
