[ ORIGINS ]My Indian origins define me and make me the person I am. Being born and brought up in India, my life

experiences and learnings, my thinking and my way of living will always have the stamp of my homeland.

That is the source of all my childhood memories, my old friends, my family and a very big part of my life.

No wonder I always have stories from back home to share, always find a medium to connect me back to what

I have left behind. To understand me better, one has to know where I come from, where my roots are...

Likewise, in design to solve and understand a problem, you need to get to its roots and comprehend it’s

inception. Only then can you build a strong foundation for your concept and ultimately find a solution.

This book is a collection of my works and an attempt to give you a peek into their origins.

01.[ A DIFFERENT KIND OF LUXURY ]

Stressed spelled backwards is desserts, coincidence? I think not! Chocolate is a great natural antidepressant.

It contains tryptophan which helps you create serotonin, your body’s own antidepressant. Also, the phenyl-

ethylamine, found in chocolate has been shown to release serotonin and endorphins- two known chemicals

that make us feel happy.

De Beers Chocolate

Packaging

Package Design 1

Thomas Mcnulty

Aanchal Mandhyan

To design a line of chocolate packaging for the company De Beers that special-

izes in the business of diamond jewelry.

A luxurious design inspired by the intricate cuts of a jewel. A special collection

of truffle boxes to emulate the feel of opening a box to discover a gem. The idea

was to make the packaging rich and lavish as to be able to sell as an accompany-

ing gift with the store’s jewelry.

02.[ THE ART OF HENNA TATTOOS ]

People get tattoos for a variety of reasons: to identify themselves with a religious or social group, to adorn

their bodies, as protective symbols, to cover skin discolorations, to embrace a feeling, to flaunt an attitude,

to proclaim love, to support an ideology... it is but a way of expression of one’s true self, a medium to find

one’s inner freedom.

Find your Freedom Event

Graphic Design 2

To plan an event sponsored by a fictitious health-product company called Aerivie

and advertise the paper company Neenah.

A Henna body art convention targeting the youth and banking on word of

mouth publicity. The art of Henna tattoos was chosen over the traditional form

of ink-needle tattooing to reinstate the medicinal and health angle of the event.

The tattoo designs are different with purpose as to appeal to a large audience.

Also, the poster was divided into sections that were perforated so that these take-

away pieces lend more public attention.

03.[ SPRING ON THE WALLS ]

Springtime is seen as a time of growth, renewal, of new life being born, and of the cycle of life once again

starting. It is also used more generally as the very idea of a new beginning. Likewise when people paint their

houses they are looking for a change, a new environment, look & feel, what better way than to give them

some spring to paint their walls...

04.[ A HOME OUT OF GROCERY BAGS ]

Recycling turns materials that would become waste into valuable resources. If we reduce the toxicity of the

trash we throw away, try to reuse containers and products we can take some load off the landfills. The process

of making something new out of something used can also be exciting and refreshing. For example a multi-

colored scarf from left-over wool, wall art from old cds, collages from scrap paper, the list is endless.

Target Birdhouse

Packaging

To utilize eco-friendly methods to build a functional birdhouse out of recycled

or scraped materials.

Using the traditional technique of crochet and using target grocery bags instead

of thread or wool the main structure or outer covering of the birdhouse was cre-

ated. The base was an old wicker basket, the middle frame was a scraped plastic

table-mat, these materials were acquired from the local city recycling center. The

result is a visually appealing and functional birdhouse.

05.[ NOT JUST ANOTHER LAMP ]

We can only survive in this world if we have a good sense of humor. Life is tough, there are bills to pay, jobs

to do, errands to run. Only if we start taking pleasure in the simple things in life can we survive this mad

race against time. I once read somewhere that once you have the ability to find a smile looking at ordinary

things around you, that’s when you make them into something extraordinary.

To get experience in working with outside vendors and build a lamp for the

company Fred & Friends that would reflect the brand personality.

Fred is an iconic brand making fun, stylish products that always have a sense of

humor to them. My basic approach was to brainstorm for objects that are closely

connected to the concept of light. After a long sketching process, I narrowed

down the idea of making a lamp inspired by the Zippo lighter. The result is a

product that could be easily added to the Fred catalog.

06.[ SOME LIKE IT SQUARE ]

Wine is an alcoholic beverage, typically made of fermented grape juice. The natural chemical balance of

grapes is such that they can ferment without the addition of sugars, acids, enzymes or other nutrients. Wine

is produced by fermenting crushed grapes using various types of yeast. Yeast consumes the sugars found in

the grapes and converts them into alcohol. This alcohol or wine then becomes the life of many celebrations,

parties, candle-light dinners or just some alone time...

To design wine bottles for the company Nine x Nine reflecting different price

points, lower-priced Zinfandel and Chardonnay and also an expensive bottle.

The special thing about the wine is that the grapes are cultivated on 9 x 9 square

fields, thus after doing an extensive pattern study with different square designs,

a series of patterns was created for the labels. The number 9 also represents the

brand and thus was given a prominent spot in the design. In the end you have a

visually striking design that would stand out from the competition.

07.[ BEHIND THE WHEELS ]

Cars are reminiscent of speed, if not then they are not cars they are bullock carts! What does a man look in

a car? Does he want his machine to be his alter ego? Or does he want it to be everything that he aspires to

be. It would not be wrong to say that cars are to men what jewelry is to women, an object of desire, the

symbol of status and the joy of ownership.

08.[ AN ASSET CALLED EDUCATION ]

The ability to learn is programmed in our dna. Right from the time we are babies, when we learn the basics

of survival like walking, eating, talking etc, to the greater things in life when we grow up. An education is

the best gift one can get or give, it is the door to knowledge, enlightenment and understanding. It is both

the journey and the destination...

09.[ A TALE OF SURVIVAL ]

If we ever think that our life is tough, we should compare it to the Emperor Penguins, and that might give

us some perspective. Their way of living and their means of survival is proof that love is the driving force

behind our ability to bear pain and hardships in life. How else does one explain survival in the harsh weather

of Antarctica and the same drill every year...

Emperor Penguins Book

Print

Typography 3

Carolina De Bartolo

Aanchal Mandhyan

To design a 100 page book on a topic that reinstates the concept of survival. The

subject of the book is Emperor penguins and the survival of their chick.

The design idea came about after a word study or mind map. The bold black

lines and the white in the book is reflective of the black and white appearance of

the penguins. The illustration style was kept organic as the subject matter is

humanly and the data was backed up by scientific maps and charts. The book is

scientific in approach and yet can be enjoyed by animal lovers.

10.[ IDENTITY COLLECTION ]

A trademark represents a brand, it is the face of the company and can communicate the quality, ideology and

effectiveness of its products or services. A great mark is memorable, it resonates with its audience and also

creates an emotional bond, thus helping with recall value.

Identity

Various

Various

To design identities that represent the person, place or company in the most

effective way and therefore truly convey their image and personality.

This is a collection of some of the logos I designed over the course of my degree.

Behind each design there was extensive research and numerous iterations so as to

come up with a mark that is simple, bold and honest.

[ THANKS ]To my husband Bharat, for being such a wonderful companion, my friend, my critic and my strength. You

were always there, staying up late at nights, taking care of the baby, sacrificing weekends, I could not have

done this without your unconditional love and support. My accomplishments are as much yours as they

are mine.

To my family, for always believing in me, and giving me the freedom to do what I like. You always instilled

in me the idea that nothing is impossible and that I can do anything.

To my friend Aaina Sharma, for being there when I needed her most, Anu Poddar for being a good listener,

good friend and motivating me at every step along the way.

To my faculty members, Tom Mcnulty for being patient and understanding, Jeremy Stout for his guidance

and support, Mary Scott for being a wonderful department director and all the others who helped me along

the way to pursue my education.
