Build a European Knowledge-Based Bio-Economy (KBBE)by bringing

together

all stakeholders

to develop

the

basis for new eco-efficient and competitive

bio- based

products

Respond to social and economic challenges:–

Sustainable agriculture/fishery and climate change

Increasing need for high quality and sustainable food production

Food-related disorders (cardiovascular, obesity …)

Infectious animal diseases and zoo-noses–

Alternatives to fossil oil

Support other EU policies such as CAP, Maritime policy, Forest Strategy, Animal Health, Environment, Energy, Development and Trade PoliciesRespond quickly to emerging research needsSupport the coordination of National ResearchProgrammes - ERA-NETS

Preparing WP2009(1) Major trends/challenges affecting the Bio-economy

1. Changing patterns in world trade: - globalisation- CAP reform- consumer-led production

2. Coping with climate change: - spread of plant diseases- new varieties/crops- coping with unpredictability- water issues- soil degradation

3. Feeding the increasing world population:- 6.5 bn in 2005 8.3 bn in 2030- increasing calorie consumption per capita- rising meat demand – up 70% by 2030

4. Increasing environmental considerations:- minimizing further agricultural land use- habitat protection- maintenance of biodiversity

5. Shifts in energy supply: - higher costs of fossil fuels/scarcity- security of supply- CO2 reduction

Within Theme 2, a number of topics specifically address knowledge transfer, consortia should propose appropriate measures to increase the use of results by industry, policy makers and society.

Innovation-related aspects need to be clearly addressed and action plans should be presented. These should show the optimal use of project results and would be considered an integral task of each project.
