WHAT IS “BLOCK SCHEDULING?”

• Each day consists of 4 instructional periods

• each about 85-90 minutes in length

• It organizes a school day into fewer, but longer, class periods

• The model CHS uses is a 4 x 4 Block Schedule

• 4 blocks per day & 4 terms per year

• The year is still divided into 2 semesters, each containing 2

terms (i.e., Quarters)

• 1 credit courses are completed in 2 terms (i.e., one semester)

• .50 credit courses are completed in 1 term (i.e., one quarter)

WHAT IS A “SKINNY”?

• A designated 90-minute “Block” is divided in half within which two

45-Minutes Courses are scheduled

• Each 45-minute course is now designated as a “Skinny”

• Why: A “Skinny” allows Band & Choir classes to run all year for 1

credit rather than all year for 2 credits

• Result: Each 1 credit band or choir course runs all year at 45-

minutes per day

• Even if your student is not enrolled in Band or Choir, it is possible to

have skinnies in their schedule

* “Skinny” course credits are as follows:

• 1 credit “Skinny” courses are completed in a year

• .50 credit “Skinny” courses are completed in a semester

AP COURSES & HOW TO PREPARE

• Students can earn college credit while in high school in a number

of different ways. The most popular option would be:

• AP Courses – Students take a college level class while in high school.

In May they have the option to take the AP test – the score they

receive on the test will determine how the credit will transfer to a

college

• Universities/Colleges usually give credit for scores of 3 or above

• AP Courses at CHS: AP Psychology, AP English Literature, AP English

Language, AP Human Geography, AP US History/AP US Government, AP

Computer Science, AP European History, AP Calculus AB and BC, and AP

Seminar

• There is an AP Prep Course here at CHS that helps transition

students to the college level courses

• If you know that your child will want to take AP classes as a

sophomore, you may want to sign them up for American Studies

EXTRA CURRICULAR & ATHLETIC PROGRAMMING

• Advantages:

• Teach universal lessons such as time management, value of practice, the

satisfaction of success, and how to apply themselves

• Help build confidence

• Builds relationships

• Keeps students in a safe, monitored place

• Builds character

• Studies show us that students who participate in a school activity are less likely to

drop out, skip class, miss school, and usually end up earning a GPA of 3.0 or

higher

• Chilton High School offers over 40 clubs, organizations, or sports for students to

join.

• Freshmen are encouraged to be involved in 3-4 clubs, organizations, or sports to

see what is available, make friends with students outside of their grade level, and

to start exploring what they may want to do in the future.
