PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Ms O‟Brien

Welcome back to school and a special welcome to all our new families who have joined the school in 2010. It was great to meet new parents at our first P&C meeting last week. Congratulations are in order to those students who finished school last year and are now at University, in the workforce or pursuing tertiary studies at TAFE or at other institutions. Outstanding performances from Berhan Kassem, and Hangzang Wang in Mathematics saw those students included in the NSW honours list. 2009 was a very busy year at Granville Boys High School and much was achieved. I am very proud of the hard work of the staff and particularly the school executive. We were most fortunate to oversee the improvements to the learning environment in 2009. Science and Technology resources were significantly improved by the refurbishment When reflecting upon 2009 at Granville Boys, the hard work of many staff students and parents becomes evident. Staff have been actively engaged in Professional Learning and at the same time, they have adjusted to many changes in the school structures, curriculum and physical amenity. They have been especially accommodating when it came to moving and clearing out the accumulated paper and old furniture that had built up over many years. Students have assisted with the moves and the Year 11 Construction students helped remodel shelves and build new seating in the grounds. Parents have sat on committees to help select new staff and the new canteen lessee. The school has made a smooth transition into digital education. We were able to distribute our laptops to Year 9 within a week of them arriving

in the school and we now have 6 Interactive Whiteboards in the school. An additional 3 will be purchased this term. Staff are presenting at the Statewide Information and Communication Technology Conference “Inspire Innovate”, in March The physical environment of the school has been greatly enhanced by the refurbishment of the Science Laboratories, the addition of a Language Laboratory, the painting works that have freshened Block 2, the new Covered Outdoor Learning Area and the relocation of faculties. We have a new Connected Learning room which doubles as a Professional Learning Space and we have a refurbished Administration area. The smell of fresh paint is only slowly fading. Our school buses that follow a route through Granville and through Auburn have been very successful. The purchase of our new (old) bus has not only given our CLO‟s Ahmad Dennaoui and Kehe Luitai a lot of fun, but has been used extensively for football games at other venues and for small excursions. Enrolments for 2010 have topped 500. This is very important for the staffing of the school as we retain 2 Deputy Principals, a full time general Assistant and more Support staffing. And now we look forward to a busy 2010. Our learning targets have been set and we aim to improve the student learning outcomes in 2010. NAPLAN commences in May and the each faculty has completed their plan for NAPLAN, the integration of ICT and an improvement in student engagement and retention. With careful planning and a diagnostic approach to specific learning needs the overall student average performance will improve. On behalf of the school, again I would like to say welcome and assure you that my door is open if you wish to see me about any issues pertinent to our school. Linda O‟Brien Principal

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Mr Marciniak

This Year we received and welcomed over eighty year 7 students. This is an increase of more than thirty percent of the enrolled number in 2009 at the same time. The Year 7 boys have settled in quite well after their period of getting to know the school and how to find their classes. The first couple of days allowed the students to understand the structure of the school, the rules and expectations. During the second week the Learning Support Team worked with and assessed the learning abilities of the boys. The information gathered from this process will be used to formulate individual learning plans for those in need.

New school diaries were issued this year to all students from Years 7 to 12. The new school diaries were the creation of the PBIS team and were designed to encapsulate the values, expectations and strong community connection which is part of Granville Boys. The diaries are well presented and well organised to allow our boys to record all homework and assessment tasks. The diaries are also used to allow teachers and parents to communicate to each other, through the comment section on each page. Students are also able to keep their merit certificates and time table in the attached plastic sheet. I encourage all parents to check their son‟s diary on a daily or weekly basis for homework and teacher comments. The boys have appreciated and embraced the quality of the new diaries and are using them well. Teachers, Roll Call Teachers, Year Advisors and the Senior Executive are regularly asking to see student diaries and the response has been impressive.

Later this term I intend to provide a presentation to parents on how to create a study time table for their sons and where to access resources that can be used to help their sons further improve their academic potential.

At our first school development day for 2010, the PBIS team proposed in draft GBHS Anti-Bullying Plan. The primary focus of the plan is to allow all students in the school to attend and achieve their full potential without threat or fear of bullying from other students. The plan outlines the different forms in which bullying can occur, the responsibility of staff to be proactive in identifying, acting on and reporting bullying to the appropriate people as well as providing a process for the students to anonymously report instances of bullying through a referral process. The plan was fully endorsed by staff and will be presented to parents for further consultation prior to complete implementation.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Mr Mallios

The new year has brought with it a great set of opportunities for the staff and students at GBHS. This year we will be completing the installation of wireless networks in every classroom, meaning a student or teacher with a learning device will be able to access the internet almost everywhere in the school. Year 9 students will be receiving a learning device (netbook) early in Term 2. We have been informed that the updated device will feature a slightly larger screen and keyboard. Also they will be slightly more robust and speedy. The device colour for 2010 will be Blue. During the Easter break the school will be revamping the systems infrastructure to optimise student and staff access to support and resources over the next 4 years. Our new systems will be mainly supported by the South West Sydney Region ICT service unit, meaning most issues will be resolved for free. The new system will be the first regional implementation of a totally supported virtual server environment. In the medium and long term this will save on purchasing of replacement hardware and allow new initiatives to launch with lower costs.

In 2009 we initiated a new push for increased usage of Information & Communication Technologies in the classroom. This involved an executive conference mid year where we set the direction and structure for implementing change. Utilising Professional Learning sessions each fortnight to modify teaching programs and come up with innovative teaching resources and activities to engage students in learning. As an outcome of this great work at GBHS by all the staff we are showcasing this change at the

4TH

Annual ICT innovators conference in March. This is a great opportunity to lift the profile of the school state wide. Mr Miller and I will be co-presenting, with small demonstrations from several other teaching staff displaying lessons that have been created using this initiative. Have a great Term 1. DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Mr Towney

Firstly I would like to welcome back all students for another exciting year at Granville Boys and also a big welcome to all our new Year 7 students and families. 2009 was a big year for the school and 2010 looks to be even bigger and better. At the end of last term Mr Marciniak, Mr Rutherford, Mr Bradley, Kehe and I took a group of exceptional students on the Deputy Principal‟s reward excursion. The group did some fishing and swimming at Bundeena just south of Cronulla. All teachers and students had a great day which was capped off with some cricket and rugby league on the sand. All students will have the opportunity again this term to attend the Deputy Principal‟s reward excursion by being safe, respectful learners in class and the playground. An issue that has been brought to our attention this year is parents dropping students off at school. The school has received some complaints and parents have been fined by police for dropping students off in the wrong spot. All students should be dropped off in designated parking areas and students should use the crossing at the front of the school to cross the road. We would hate for one of our students to be involved in an accident as the crossing is the safest place for students to cross the road. Our school buses will be running again this year to drop students home in Granville and Auburn. The buses will leave from the front of school at 3pm, with the Granville bus travelling on Blaxcell St. and Excellsior St. The Auburn bus will travel up Clyde St. turning left onto Mona St. then joins Cumberland Rd and follows it all the way to St. Johns Rd. The bus then loops around past Berala station and heads towards Auburn hospital before ending near Auburn station. If parents would like any further information about the buses please contact me at school.

I‟m looking forward to a great year! Mr Towney Deputy Principal

ENGLISH REPORT Ms F Cullenward

The English faculty have really enjoyed getting to know our new students – our year 7 students and the few new students across years 8 to 12. Welcome to English study at Granville Boys High School. Year 12 Advanced and Standard English classes have completed their first HSC English Assessment task for the Area of Study, Belonging – an in-class essay and four pieces of directed writing –and the latter should have been submitted to their respective teachers for a final assessment mark. All students should have been taking advantage of having drafts checked by their teacher numerous times before submitting their final texts in order to achieve their best possible result. They have commenced studying the next module – the standard course students are reading The Story of Tom Brennan by JC Burke, for Module C: Texts and Society, Into the World. The Advanced course students are studying Julius Caesar for Module C: Representation and Texts, Conflicting Perspectives. Students should be clear about the „rubric‟ requirements of the module they are studying and how to integrate this into their writing. It is imperative that all HSC students should be reading and re-reading their set texts at home as their success in the HSC English examinat ion is dependent on their knowledge of the text and being able to answer any question about that text set by the Board of Studies. Students should be undertaking a regular home study programme to ensure their success in the next round of Assessment Tasks. The English faculty is very excited to be offering Preliminary English Extension I this year. The students are reading Othello and will be undertaking studies in the appropriation of the text. Year 11 Advanced and Standard classes are currently undertaking the study of Physical Journey. The Standard students are viewing “Rabbit Proof Fence‟ directed by Phillip Noyce. The Advanced students are studying the poetry of Coleridge. The first Assessment tasks will be completed towards the end of this term so all Preliminary students should be ensuring that they have read/are reading the set texts and related texts and completing homework tasks on a regular basis. All students in Year 10 have had a lot of fun and put the laptops to good use, with a unit on video production. Look out Baz Luhrmann! The assessment outcome for this unit will be

achieved from a number of minor tasks carried out in class as well as from scripting, storyboarding and the final video product. Year 9 have been reading a variety of horror stories for enjoyment and completing tasks to develop their reading and writing skills. Assessment outcomes for this unit will be taken from class work as well as composing a horror story. Year 8 are learning about types and purposes of newspaper reports and their learning outcomes will be assessed from class work as well as an assessment activity. Year 7 are enjoying reading a variety of fairy tales and will learn about different representations in these stories later this term. They are also completing class activities to develop their reading and writing skills. Years 7,8 and 9 are being issued with homework books which need to be completed weekly and signed by the parent/s. Each class may have a different due date for the homework booklet during the week because not all classes are timetabled at the same time. Please ensure that your son has an exercise book and other necessary equipment – pens, pencils, ruler, eraser, pencil sharpener ,every day English classes. Does your son like arguing? Students are wanted from both the senior and junior years to form debating teams. There will be inter-school debating workshops and competitions later in the year but we are keen to form teams for inter-house debating here at school so the team members can get some practice at this valuable skill. There are also senior and junior public speaking competitions: The Sydney Morning Herald Plain English Speaking Competition and The Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award. Both the debating and public speaking competitions have substantial prizes for the winners and there is a small entry fee. „Bush lawyers‟ interested in the debating and public speaking competitions should contact Ms Love in the English staffroom. Do you want to make „Avatar‟II? Interested students should know that there is a short film making competition open to all students. Anyone who is interested should contact Mr Egan in the English staffroom. For all those Roald Dahl „wannabes‟, you can see Ms Gandouin in the English staffroom to enter any or all of 3 writing competitions open to interested students. We wish all students and their families well for a busy year of learning. Ms F Cullenward Head Teacher, English

MATHEMATICS REPORT Mrs Saisanas

Welcome to 2010 and a special welcome to our new students and their families. Our experienced team of Mathematics teachers are back for this year with Mrs Khan, Mr Pakkiam, Mr Hoang, Mr Shouk and Mr Niazi, with the addition of Ms Bhamjee who will be teaching 7E this year. Most boys have started the year off well, however it is essential that all boys are prepared for their maths lessons. Students require a mathematics grid book which may be purchased at the front office for $2.00, scientific calculator, which may also be purchased at the front office for $20.00, pens, pencils, ruler and a geometry set. Year 7, 8 and 9 students require a 96 page homework book. We advise that grid books and homework books are covered for extra protection. Textbooks are in the process of being issued and once again, I ask for your assistance with students returning textbooks issued in 2009. If you have any textbooks which have not been returned from previous years, please take this opportunity to return these textbooks to the maths staff room. All students have been issued with course outlines which are located on the inside front cover of their workbooks. These outlines indicate the sequence of topics to be covered each term and an approximate timeframe. Homework is an essential component in reinforcing and consolidating course work taught in class. In Years 7, 8 and 9, homework will contribute towards Semester 1 Class Assessment mark. Students will be allocated homework either as assigned exercises from their textbooks or worksheets. Homework is checked by the class teacher and all students are expected to complete this work.

Assessment tasks, class tests, projects/assignments and problem solving tasks will commence shortly. Students should follow school policies and procedures for these. The Mathematics faculty has been fortunate in securing funds to purchase Mathletics for 2010. Students will consolidate work delivered in class with the use of this online program every week and homework will be assigned accordingly. We encourage at least one hour of work at home per week. Students will have access to this interactive program via the internet at home 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays. All students in Years 7, 8 and 9 and a majority of Year 10 students will be issued with passwords which will allow them access to the program. Another initiative which the faculty has undertaken is the use of commercially produced homework books for the senior school. I would like to thank all our parents who have supported us in this process and envisage that our boys will benefit from the additional work. Students who have not paid can purchase the relevant books from bookstores such as Angus and Robertson or Dymocks. I look forward to a productive year. Mrs Vicky Saisanas HeadTeacher, Mathematics

SUPPORT UNIT REPORT Mrs Rudek

The Support Unit staff would like to welcome our new year 7 students to the support unit. Mrs Sivrioglu is teaching year 7 and 8. It‟s an exciting time for the Year 9 support students as they have been integrated into the mainstream for their subjects. Mr Collins and Mrs Khouri are working in a support role to assist teachers and students with the integration process. So far we have had some positive results. I am teaching the Senior students which consist of years 10, 11 and 12 with the assistance of Mr Bradley with student learning. In week seven of this term the support unit will be holding the unit‟s Individual Education Planning Meeting. The support staff will be meeting the parents of year 7 to discuss students‟ individual learning needs and to establish a valuable partnership between parents, teachers and the school. We are planning this event for all students and parents in the support unit and are looking forward to catching up with parents from last year. We are very fortunate to have The Get Ready Program running again this year in conjunction with Auburn Youth Centre. Years 10, 11 and 12 support students are participating in this valuable program each Wednesday. The senior students have begun to develop and up-date their Resumes during class time with the Careers Adviser. This is an ongoing process and very important to their work experience placements and future post-school pathways. The work experience program is operating every Friday and students are either currently working in jobs that they really enjoy or are speaking to prospective employers about suitable work experience placements they may have available. Head Teacher Support Suzanne Rudek

HSIE REPORT

Mr Mandarakas

It‟s the beginning of the year and the HSIE faculty is busily preparing for a full and productive year. This term is particularly busy as students new to the school adjust to new timetables and structures. The staff ask that all parents assist their sons by ensuring they go over the next day‟s timetable and check to see that students have the right books and equipment for the day. Soon all students in HSIE will have been issued with their first assessment task. It‟s important that all students use the minimum of two weeks to research, plan and attempt these tasks. Students need to ensure that they hand them in on time. Presently Year 7 students are completing a Unit on “What is Geography?”. Year 8 students are investigating the effects of colonisation on Australia‟s indigenous population. Year 9 History students are studying the Federation of Australia, whilst Year 10 Geography students are studying issues related to the environment and Year 10 History are studying Australia and the Cold War. Once again students are invited to join the Legal Studies team as they take on local schools in the Metropolitan South West area. To assist Year 10 History and Geography students expand their knowledge of content , a number of excursions have been planned, as well as years 7 and 8. This term Year 7 will be going on a tour of Sydney Harbour as part of their Geography studies to investigate different buildings and natural environments. Students will need to bring their own lunch and writing material. Year 10 History will be attending a drama presentation on the Vietnam War. This will help students to better understand the many complex issues of Australia‟s involvement in the Vietnam War. A further overnight excursion to Canberra is also being planned for later in the year.

Geography students will also have the opportunity to participate in a geography skills development day. Mr Mandarakas Head Teacher, HSIE

The PDHPE staff is very excited about the new school year and are looking forward to more sporting success in 2010. A large number of students have chosen elective courses offered in year 9, 10, 11 and 12. This also marks a new era in the PDHPE department with the launch of a new academic course for year 9 with Football Studies. This will follow a similar syllabus to PASS with the additional focus on different types of football including soccer, rugby league and union, gridiron and AFL. Another key focus of the department is the increase of the use of ICT within the curriculum, in lessons and with assessment tasks, with a key focus on year 9 and 10 in conjunction with the overall school plan. In practical lessons „game sense approach‟ will also be a main focus on game tactics and strategies

and less emphasis on skill development.

LEARNING SUPPORT TEAM REPORT

Mrs Adderley

This year has got off to an exciting start. The Learning Support Faculty has expanded and now consists of: Melinda Adderley – Head Teacher Teaching and Learning / Teacher Librarian Yasmin Bhamjee – Support Teacher Learning Assistance Catherine Baker - Support Teacher Learning Assistance Tisha Das – English as Second Language Teacher Don Hones - Support Teacher Teaching and Learning / English as a Second Language Teacher/ Community Liaison Officer Bernadette Bailey - Careers Officer Adrian Hryce – Transition Officer Ahmad Dennaoui – Community Liaison Officer / Student Learning Support Officer Kehe Sione Liutai - Community Liaison Officer / Student Learning Support Officer The Learning Support Faculty support students through individual, small group and in class support, as well as this we run an intensive reading group and a peer reading group. If you feel that your son / ward is having difficulties with his school work please feel free to contact me. The Gifted and Talented Program is also co-ordinated through this team. This year the gifted and talented program will be run out of the Library after school on Thursdays from 3pm to 4pm. If you feel your son / ward is academically gifted and would benefit from this program please contact me. By now students should have settled back into school. To maximise student potential all students should be studying at home:

Study Tips:

Have a designated place to study, this

space should be away from distractions

like the TV but close to you for

supervision and assistance

Have a designated study time (at least 40

minutes for years 7 to 9). Where possible

make this the same time each day so

routines can be established

No one should say that they have “no

homework”. If students have no formal

homework from class teachers they

should still be reading each night and

they should also read over and review

what they had done in class that day.

This helps with retention of classroom

activities.

All boys in years 7 to 9 are expected to

take part in the Premiers Reading

Challenge (PRC). They will have a PRC

sheet in the back of their diaries, when

they finish reading a book get them to

summarize what happened in the book

and then sign their PRC sheet.

The Homework club will take place in the school Library on Monday & Wednesday afternoons. The Homework club will be starting up in week 5 on Wednesday 24 February and run from 3pm-4.00pm. Please see contact Ms Baker or request a permission form, if your son would like to attend. Finally the Learning Support Faculty looks forward to collaborating with you in order to improve your son/wards learning opportunities

From the Library:

As previously mentioned all students in years 7 to 9 are expected to participate in the Premiers Reading Challenge (PRC). The library has plenty of books in the PRC list, so ask your son/ward what PRC book they have borrowed. Also many of the local libraries can also help you with PRC books so don‟t forget to ask when you are in there.

A Chess and Checkers Club has commenced on Thursday Morning from 8am to 8.50, any boys interested are encouraged to join. Mrs Adderley Head Teacher, Learning Support Team, Librarian

Mrs Bailey-Marsman Welcome back to another exciting busy year. Year 12 has been looking at their post-school options and this is an ongoing process with them. There will be a lot of information coming across my desk about University courses and Open Days, TAFE courses and Open Days, Scholarships, Traineeships and Cadetships, Apprenticeships and Employment Agencies. This information will be made available to the students and parents/guardians through:

Year 10 students are learning about the importance of having a good Resume that they can give to prospective employers and are currently developing their own Resume. We work on this together during a set interview time in groups of 6, then students email their Resume to me. This process has been made easier with the issuing of Laptops to the students last year. Senior Support students have the opportunity of work experience every Friday. So students are either working in jobs that are very familiar to them or are at present speaking to new prospective employers to see if they can use the employability skills that they developed in previous work experience placements in new jobs.
