TAgLINEEducation Beyond Textbooks and Classrooms

Dear St. Andrew’s Families,

It’s time for Orientation and a new year at St. Andrew’s. Through careful evaluation, combined with your feedback, we continue to improve the “back to school” process.

On Monday, August 18, we will host one community-wide orientation event. This change brings all three divisions to campus on the same evening. Students, parents and faculty will also benefit by having Tuesday free for any last minute needs. Then the big day - Wednesday, August 20 - welcomes all to the first day of school.

During the summer, we have been busy preparing for another year of successes. This includes campus improvements, a brand new STEM lab in the Lower School, new faculty hires and the launch of a new website coming in August.

Please take a moment to review this document. You will find important dates on the calendar, tips for success in and out of the classroom, and a variety of ways to tie into the St. Andrew’s community. If you have any further questions, please contact a member of the St. Andrew’s team. We are here for you and ready for a new year.

Here’s to education beyond textbooks and classrooms,

6 ORIENTATION 2014/15

Dear Lower School Parents & Families,

The first day of school is an important and exciting milestone each year. Students come back to school a bit different than when they left - usually a few inches taller, sometimes a new haircut, new school supplies and book bags in hand. I love seeing the smiles on students’ faces as they begin a new school year and greet another year with eager anticipation. One of my favorite back to school books is Pete The Cat Rocking in My School Shoes by Eric Litwin. Pete is nervous about his first day of school reminding us even the coolest cats can get a bit anxious. However, Pete’s new shoes which give him the confidence to face each part of the day, noting at the end that “It’s all good.”

We have been busy preparing for the coming school year and invite you to the following events. Drop-In Orientation is Monday, August 18 from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. (Please note this is a change of date from the calendar published in January with re-enrollment.) This is a great time to bring in your school supplies, meet your new teachers, and explore your new classroom. Orientation will also give you an opportunity to sign up for lunch accounts, after school care, and various school organizations in which you can become involved. There will be a special 30 minute meeting at 5:00 p.m. in the third grade classrooms for all third grade students and new fourth grade students to learn about our band and strings programs and choosing an instrument.

Please mark your calendars now to also join us on Thursday, August 28 at 6 p.m. for Lower School Back-to-School Night. We begin the evening in the Johnson Center gymnasium for opening remarks and introductions. This year we have a special part of our program dedicated to holding our ribbon cutting for our new STEM iLab. Following our short program, we will dismiss to classrooms and teachers will give an overview of the year, expectations and procedures, and communication for their classes.

Please read through the following pages to take note of the many reminders and events as we embark on a new school year to ensure a smooth first day. Remember that like Pete the Cat, even the coolest cats can get anxious about that big first day. As always, we are here to assist in any way we can. St. Andrew’s Lower School remains committed to challenging each child to meet their full potential within a community of learners committed to success. Here’s to another year full of wonder, learning and growth!

Best wishes,

FIRST DAY TIPSThe beginning of the school year can be exciting but also nerve-wracking, especially for young children or those new to the school. The National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) recently published an article with some useful tips for transitioning back to school that I thought would be helpful to share. Try to use the last week before school to relax and spend family time. getting your supplies and back-to-school shopping done early can make the time right before school begins less stressful and may help your child be less anxious. Also, make sure to start your school day routines a few days ahead of schedule (especially bedtimes and wake-up times). For children with separation anxiety, try leaving them for short periods with family members or friends in order to practice your “goodbye” routine. Lastly, take care of first-day ceremonial pictures and other to-dos at home so that the drop-off at school is as calm as possible.

DROP OFF & PICK-UPWe have staff available to supervise your children beginning at 7:00 a.m. If you arrive before 7:45 a.m., please bring your child directly to the gym. After 7:45, students should be dropped off at the walkway next to the playground where a teacher will be on duty to welcome your child. Please do not park along the front of the building during carpool times. Students in grades 1 - 4 should be present by 8 a.m. All Pre-K and Kindergarten children should arrive no later than 8:15 a.m. Please make every effort to help your child arrive on time. Children arriving late will miss important learning time and will be counted tardy. Students arriving late must enter through the front of the building by the administrative offices and parents must sign in with Ms. Sapp.

Students in grades 1 - 4 will report directly to the lower school gym where a teacher will supervise them until assembly begins at 8:00 a.m. Every Friday, grades 1 - 4 will meet with the entire student body in Compton Hall gym on the main campus at 8:00 a.m. for an assembly. Please bring your child directly to Compton. Someone will be there to supervise until the assembly begins.

Dismissal time for children in Pre-K and K is 2:45 p.m. Dismissal for grades 1 - 4 is 3:00 p.m. Please note that you should enter through the main campus entrance when picking up in the afternoon. To avoid traffic backing up onto Penn Waller, we restrict entrance to the drive at the top of the Johnson Center campus for afternoon dismissal.

It is important that the 2:45 carpool line be for Pre-K and K only. We ask that parents of students in grades 1 - 4 wait to join carpool for dismissal at 3:00. If parents of 1st - 4th grade students arrive before 3:00, they may wait in the lower parking lot by the bridge. If you have children in both car pool lines, we will care for your younger child until the 3:00 dismissal. Students in grades 1- 3 and siblings will be loaded into cars in front of the playground area. Students in grades 4 and their siblings will be loaded into cars at the main entrance. Children that are not picked up at dismissal time will be taken by the faculty to Sundowners, our after school program. Children are not allowed to wait in the main office or outside unattended.

SCHOOL COMMUNICATIONAll Lower School students will bring home an envelope each Friday, our famous “Friday Folder,” which contains class papers, school notices, reminders, field trip information, report cards, etc. This is an important way for the school to communicate with you. Please look for this envelope each Friday, review its contents, initial it and have your child return it to the teacher on Monday. We will also send out a monthly email newsletter with updates, news, and reminders for the month as well as emails with important and time sensitive communications. Please make sure to check the website for important dates and reminders as well.

MORNINg SNACKS AND DININg HALL INFORMATIONWe provide a morning snack for the children in Pre-K and K. Mid-morning snacks for the older students should be brought from home. Please try to limit the snacks to healthy foods such as cheese, popcorn, granola bars, and other nourishing treats. We request that no liquid snacks be sent such as juice, yogurt or fruit cocktail since cleaning up can prove difficult when spills occur.Hot lunches for Pre-K and K are delivered to the classrooms while grades 1 - 4 eat in the Skinner Dining Hall. Primary Division (grades 1 - 4) children may bring lunches from home or may purchase them from our food service. Caffeinated or carbonated beverages and candy are not allowed in Lower School lunches or snacks. Thrive prepares our food with an emphasis on nutrition and healthy meals and we urge parents to utilize this food service. Please let your teacher and the school nurse know if your child has a serious food allergy.

8 ORIENTATION 2014/15

Dear Middle School Parents & Families,

It is with excitement and enthusiasm that I welcome you and your family to the 2014-2015 school year! The halls and classrooms of Bell Hall are already buzzing with activity as the Middle School teachers prepare for the upcoming school year - but I can assure you that all of the faculty will feel much more at home once this building is filled with Middle School students!

Middle School can be a challenging time for children and parents to negotiate. Students will get the most out of their Middle School years if they try out new things - whether it’s a new sport, a new instrument, a new look, or a new

set of friends - and it is important to allow your child the freedom to find his or her own way. Sometimes finding this path can be a bumpy ride, and watching your child struggle - no matter how important to his or her development - can be very difficult for parents to do. I encourage you to embrace the challenge, but make the ride smoother by creating connections in the school community, involving yourself in school events, and being present in your child’s education.

You will find that teachers, advisors, and administrators in the Middle School are prepared, willing, and eager to help guide your family through this pivotal time in your child’s growth. We would like to invite parents and students to attend our orientation program on Monday, August 18 at 6:00 p.m. We will meet in Compton gym to begin the program. Middle School teachers will be introduced, new technology will be discussed, and we will address any of your questions. Additionally, you and your child will have the opportunity to spend time with your child’s advisor, receive schedules, and find your child’s locker.

On the following page, I have included some important points to remember as we gear up for this school year; reading through them will help make the first day run as smoothly as possible. I hope that you have found time to relax and enjoy time with your family this summer. Again, I am eagerly anticipating having Bell Hall buzzing with the sound of Middle Schoolers learning! Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

DROP OFF & PICK-UPWe have staff available to supervise your children beginning at 7:00 a.m. If you arrive before 7:30 a.m., please bring your child to the kindergarten classroom at the Lower School. Students arriving between 7:30 and 7:45 a.m. should report directly to the Media Center in Bell Hall. All students in grades 5 - 8 must be here by 8:00 a.m. However, it is helpful for your child to arrive at school by 7:50 to give him/her the chance to get organized before the day begins. Children arriving late will miss important instructional time and will be counted tardy. Five tardies to school will result in an after-school detention.

If your child is late to school, you must accompany him/her into the office in Bell Hall to sign in. As a courtesy, any day that your child is sick and unable to attend school, please call Mrs. groves by 8:30 a.m. at extension 300. Every Friday, the entire student body will assemble in the Compton Hall gymnasium on the main campus at 8:00 for an all school assembly. Students should drop their book bags off at their lockers on this day before proceeding to the gym. Dismissal time for students in grades 5 - 8 is 3:15 p.m.

Drop off and pick up times each morning and afternoon can become congested. Please be patient and work with us to help these times run smoothly. The safety of the children is of utmost importance to us. Students may only cross at the crosswalk by Compton gym or using the sidewalk in front of Skinner Hall. They are never allowed to cross at any other point on the circle or enter or exit a car from the center lane. Please do not park in the carpool line prior to the dismissal of school and leave your car unattended!

Students who are not picked up by the conclusion of car pool (approximately 3:30) will go to Sundowners in the Media Center. You will need to sign your child out of Sundowners when you pick him/her up.

MORNINg SNACKS AND DININg HALL INFORMATIONWe provide an opportunity for students to have a morning snack each day. Students may bring snacks or lunches from home or may purchase them at school. 10 ORIENTATION 2014/15

Dear Upper School Parents & Families,

Please let me take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Tom Forti, and I am the new Upper School Head at St. Andrew’s. I have been a teacher, coach and administrator in both private and public schools for almost twenty years, most recently at a public high school on the coast of Maine.

My wife Marianne and I, true believers in independent school philosophy and tired of seven month winters, decided to pack up and move the family - Jude, a rising sixth grader, and greta, a rising fourth grader to Savannah and St. Andrew’s.

“Such a dramatic move,” friends and family said. “Twelve hundred miles away, no friends, no family and people think you talk funny.”

My answer - you just know when something is right. It did not take me long to realize that St. Andrew’s is a gem, as is the community that supports the school.

You have made my family and I feel so very welcome and for that I am grateful. So, it is with unbridled optimism and boundless enthusiasm that I approach the 2014/15 school year. A year that holds so much promise and brings with it so many possibilities.

I look forward to meeting everyone during Orientation on August 18. Until then, enjoy the rest of your summer break.

Drivers in the drop off/pick-up lines are asked to pull forward as far as possible to allow other cars to pull up without having to cut in front of others. All Upper School students must arrive no later than five minutes before the start of their first class. All Upper School students, regardless of class schedule, are required to be in Compton gym by 7:55 a.m. on Friday mornings for all school assembly. As a courtesy, any day that your child is sick and unable to attend school, please call Mrs. Perry, Upper School Administrative Assistant, by 8:30 a.m. to let her know. Upper School dismissal is 3:15 p.m. every day. Upper School students are picked up in the afternoons in front of the Athletic Field House.

It is important to keep your account with Thrive up-to-date. You may contact Thrive directly at [email protected]

PARENT/STUDENT COMMUNICATIONIf you need to contact your child during the day, please refrain as much as possible from texting or calling during class hours. Students are allowed to use cell phones only during break and lunch, so they are accessible via cell at those times. If you need to contact your student during class, we prefer you contact the office. Unless it is an emergency, a note will placed on the message board outside of Mrs. Perry’s office informing her/him of your desire to talk. Students are responsible for checking the board for messages. He/she will return your call at the earliest convenient time. If your child becomes ill during the day, he/she will be directed to the school’s nurse, Mrs. Schuster, who will, in turn, contact you. Students should not call home and request to be taken from school without first seeing Mrs. Schuster. Please assist the school in reinforcing this procedure.
