Orient meets Occident Workshop 2012 Roots in the Future: Tradition and modernity in Jazz, Arabic and European classical music and their intercultural backgrounds 1) This year's workshop in the "Orient meets Occident" series is an introduction into the basic features of Jazz and improvised music, Arabic classical music, featuring Tunisian Maalouf. Western classical musicians get a first go with new repertoire and maybe unknown soundscapes. 2) Arabic classical musicians are introduced into Jazz and its specific improvisation techniques. Lebanese, Palestinian, and Egyptian musicians get to know classical Tunisian music, Maalouf, and have the possibility to compare their local traditions. 3) Parallel workshops and discussions develop further consciousness of all participants for the subject of "intercultural music creation". The term "intercultural" includes not only the communication between distinct cultures, for example the Arab world and Europe, but also between distinct musical styles (Jazz, Western classical music, Arabic classical music). An important issue is the musical identity of the single participants and its representation in musical life and music business.
