Organizing Your Classroom and Supplies

I. Classroom Decisions About Room Arrangement
Keep High traffic areas free of
congestion
Be sure you can see allstudents
Keep frequently used teachingmaterials and student
supplies readily at hand
Be certain that students can see whole class presentations and
displays
II. Suggestions For Arranging Your Classroom
1. Wall and Ceiling Space:
a. At the beginning of school year* Class rules* Daily assignments and schedules* Decorative display with current events* Calendar* Emergency Exit diagram
b. Other displays* Regarding the topics to be discussed at hand* Track student locationsthe popsicle stick idea* Poster with pockets for student assignments
c. Large bulletin board to place students’ work
e. Use time decorating wisely

2. Floor Space
2. Arrangements of Students’ Desks•High traffic areas clear•Leave enough room between desks•Make sure that you have enough desks and chairs•Determine seating arrangements @ two weeks after classes start
3. Small Group Instruction•For brainstorming, group projects, etc.•Arrange so you can see the rest of the students•If no chairs, students can carry their own•Or, use floor
4. Computer Work Stations•Be able to see their screens to check if they are on task•Need space for printers, software, paper, etc.
5. Teacher Desks and other Furniture•Place desks at functional placesNear whole classroom instruction and materials to be usedMake sure you face the students (to be with it)
•Storage areas frequently used by students should be approachable
•Bookcases against the wall and not obstructing the students’ view of what is happening in the class
•Centers should be built according to themes, and locate them in a way that they would bother the other students•Plants and pet areas should be introduced after first week of classesRemember, they supplement instruction
