10th Asian Urbanization Conference

The First Asian Urbanization Conference was held at the University of Akron, Akron, Ohio, U.S.A. on 19-20 April 1985. The conference was sponsored and organized by the Department of Geography, The Center for Urban Studies, and the Center for International Programs of the University of Akron. More than 70 scholars from fourteen nations participated in the conference. The conference resulted in the publication of two books and three special issues in professional journals (one in the Geographical Review and two in Urban Geography) published in the United States. Many participants of the conference felt that there was a need for similar conferences to be held in different countries every three years or so, to enable interested urban scholars and planners to exchange views on recent development in various Asian regions. As a result, the Asian Urban Research Association (AURA) was formally established in January 1986, housed permanently at the University of Akron. The AURA is a non-profit and private research organization whose primary purpose is to promote the study of urbanization, urban growth in Asian regions and to organize Asian Urbanization Conferences.

Organizer: Centre of Urban Studies and Urban Planning, Faculty of Architecture The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong

Sponsor: Asian Urban Research Association (AURA)

Helpful Hints

Conference Registration

The AUC Registration Desk is located in the Rayson Huang Theatre Foyer. Please be sure to pick up the “Last Minute Programme Changes”, if available, which will update you on the latest changes of the programme. The Registration Desk will be staffed during the following hours: Monday, 17 August 8:30 am – 5:00 pm Tuesday, 18 August 8:15 am – 12:00 pm Presentation Tips • Each parallel session contains 3-5 papers.

Each presenter has 15-20 minutes to present the paper depending on the number of papers, followed by Q&A. Chair of the session will inform presenters the maximum presentation time before the session.

• In 15 minutes you can typically present about five double-spaced pages at a pace that listeners can comfortably follow.

• Do not attempt to read your paper. Don’t turn your back to the audience to read a projected text and don’t read out loud what your audience can read for itself.

• Indicate at the beginning of your talk if you will distribute your paper in hard copy at the end of the session or if you are willing to send electronic versions when you return home.

• Concentrate on what is new, interesting and different rather than providing full theory and methodology.

• AUC does not publish a conference proceeding book and, therefore, AUC does not have style, spelling and usage guidelines.

• If you have any concerns about setting up your presentation, please go to the session room 20 minutes before the start of your session to set up your presentation and ask conference staff to assist you before your scheduled presentation.

• If you do experience trouble at the very last minute of your presentation (it happens!) – please step aside immediately and offer the time to another presenter while you work out your trouble – and don’t hesitate to ask us for help. We will do what it takes to get you up and going.

Audio Visual Equipment Available On-Site for Presenters Pre-Set Equipment

Each session room is equipped with a computer and computer projector. NO overhead or slide projectors are provided. Session rooms are staffed by student volunteers. We recommend you to go to session room 20 minutes before the start of your session to set up your presentation. Please ask the conference staff to assist your set up if necessary. Computer Protocol

Computers are provided in the session rooms. You do not need to bring your own laptop for presentation. You might just bring the memory stick which contains your presentation file. To be safe, you may back up your file online just in case.

The operating system is Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Office 2003 is installed. Make sure your presentation file is compatible with the system and software (e.g. PowerPoint 2007 document may not be compatible. It is safer to save your file in PowerPoint 97-2003 *.ppt format and not PowerPoint 2007 *.pptx) Internet Access

Internet access is provided on the conference venue. Please refer to User Guide to Lab Computers and Wi-Fi (supplementary sheet) for details. Session Chair Guidelines • Please arrive at the session room five

minutes prior to the scheduled starting time and introduce yourself to the presenters.

• Inform the presenters of the maximum time that they can use for their paper presentation. This time can vary depending on the number of papers in the session and whether there is a discussant requiring time to respond. A helper in the room will help you to monitor the time of the presentations by showing last 5 minutes (green), 2 minutes (yellow) and STOP (red) signs to the paper presenters.

• When introducing the session - please be brief - tell the audience how many papers will be presented, how long each presentation will be and when there will be time for questions.

• For each paper, introduce the author and the title of the paper.

• In managing the Q&A-time, please ask questioners to identify themselves and to keep their comments as short as possible to allow the presenters to respond in full.

• Please ensure the session finishes on time. Sessions that overrun will affect next sessions.

Following the reorganization of the Centre of Urban Planning and Environmental Management (CUPEM) on 1 July 2008, the Department of Urban Planning and Design (DUPAD) was established in the Faculty of Architecture to continue the teaching of urban planning and related areas in housing management and transport. The Centre of Urban Studies and Urban Planning (CUSUP), which was established 28 years ago in 1980 and renamed as CUPEM in 1991, was re-established to continue interdisciplinary research in urban studies and planning.

Department of Urban Planning and Design

(DUPAD) DUPAD offers taught post-graduate and MPhil

and PhD research programmes in Urban Planning, Urban Design, Housing Management and Transport Policy and Planning. The MSc (Urban Planning) programme is professionally recognised by the Hong Kong Institute of Planners (HKIP) and the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI). The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) International also accredits students specialising transport planning. The professional stream of the Master of Housing Management (MHousMan (Professional Stream)) programme (jointly offered with the School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPACE)) is recognised by the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) and the Hong Kong Institute of Housing (HKIH). The MA in Transport Policy and Planning (MATPP) (jointly offered with the Department of Geography and Department of Civil Engineering) is recognized by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) International. The Master of Urban Design (MUD) is a professionally oriented programme for urban designers.

Centre of Urban Studies and Urban Planning

(CUSUP) The main function of CUSUP is to foster

interdisciplinary research in urban studies and planning in the University of Hong Kong. It aims to act as a focus for interdisciplinary research and offer a forum for academics, practitioners and the community to exchange views on urban studies and urban planning; to undertake contract research for both the public and private sectors; to organize seminars, conferences, and workshops; to publish working papers and monographs; and to promote inter-institutional, regional and international cooperation in urban studies and urban planning.
