Worship Services

Friday, March 3 - The Torah o/Money This Shabbat is traditionally called "Shabbat Shekalim," the Shabbat especially associated with Tzedakah and giving. But what does giving have to do with the season of Purim? Why have a special Shabbat of the shekel? And is there a Torah of Money? Friday, March 10 - Holiness Through Community Student Rabbi DuBois will examine the ways in which community rituals bring holiness into the world and the struggle to make sure that every member of our community can participate in our sacred rituals. Friday, March 17 - What ifElian Gonzalez Were Jewish We welcome Rabbi Soffm as our Rabbi Nathaniel Keller Memorial Lecture speaker. Rabbi Joel Soffm is the Rabbi and Spiritual leader at Temple Shalom in Succasunna, NJ. He is active in the local Inter-Faith Social Action committee and is Chainnan of the Clergy Council. Friday, March 24 - Join us with your families in a wonderful celebration of Shabbat. This is a marvelous way for families with young children to become familiar with the Shabbat experience. Please note the services start at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 31- The Mitzvah o/RedeemingCaptives At this season of our freedom, it is time to rediscover the Mitzvah of pidyon shivuyim: redeeming captives, Jewish or otherwise, around. the world. Unfortunately, this Mitzvah is as crucial as ever this year. Rabbi Gold will discuss how and why.

BABYSITTING AVAILABLE! During March, babysitting will be provided during Shabbat Services on March 17. Please call Shari Rothstein at 422-4489 or e-mail her at [email protected] to let us know you will be bringing your children. Reservations for babysitting should be made a week in advance so we can be sure to hve enough sitters. Thank you for your cooperation.

Officer's Column This December my family and I spent a memorable

ten days in Cuba. I was there as part of a group organized by the 92nd Street Y to visit the "exotic Jews of Cuba" (the description comes from a Y brochure). I am not sure whether I would call the people I met "exotic", but they, each and every one, left a profound impression.

Our group visited only two cities, Havana and Santiago de Cuba. In both cites we visited synagogues and met with members of the congregation. In Havana, we attended Friday evening services. Everywhere we went we were welcomed by our fellow Jews. Of course, they appreciated the medical supplies we brought (as the embargo makes it difficult for people to obtain even the most basic medicines). Beyond the gratitude for these goods, they were thankful that we were there. They seemed pleased to know that Jews elsewhere in the world remember them. This was especially true in Santiago de Cuba, where they receive many fewer visitors than Havana.

Let me describe the synagogue in Santiago de Cuba. Located on a small side street in a residential neighborhood, the synagogue building is freshly painted - bright turquoise. It has metal grille work on the exterior, similar to aU the buildings on the street. In fact, except for the metal name plate on the facade, one might assume it is a residence. The congregation, called Hatikvah, was founded in the nineteen thirties by Jews who had emigrated from Poland and Turkey. At one time it had over one thousand members and a grander building elsewhere in town. For more than a decade they did not even have a building; their small synagogUe was being used as an art center. Still the congregation held together. They met in private homes and struggled to educate their children, bury their dead, celebrate the festivals. They had no rabbi, no professional educators, only determination to live as Jews.

On the day we visited we were greeted by Eugenia Farin Levy, the president of the synagogue. She had invited other members of the congregation to meet with us as well, perhaps twenty people in all. They had taken time off work and school to meet us. We were surprised to see children and teenagers there in the middle of a school day and asked Mrs. Levy if it was a school holiday. She said no, but the children and their parents thought that our visit was a special occasion and wanted to be there. The situation for the congregation seemed grim. There is no Rabbi and no likelihood there will ever be a rabbi in Santiago de Cuba. The congregation has approximately 80 members (or to state it another way 21 families). They have few' books and no professional teachers. While they didn ' t discuss its funds for the upkeep for the building, must be an

Stephen J. Dubner . " A Catholic Son's ~eturn to His Jewish Family " " "" \ "" ," ~ Monday, March 13, 7.30 p.m. .,

. !.

Stephen J. Dubner, is a writer and editor of the New York Times Magazine, and the author of Turbulent Souls: A Catholic

Son's Return to His Jewish Family (William Morrow and Co., 1998). The book Is based on a cover story he wrote for the

Times Magazine, which described his parents' conversions from Judaism to Catholicism, his subsequent exploration of their roots 'and his own embrace of Judaism. Dubner's article was one of t he most widely discussed stories in the history of the Time Magazine. Turbulent Souls has received prominent national media coverage, from USA Today to ABC News / Nightline, and has been named a Notable book by the New York Times,

Before coming to the New York Times in 1994 Dubner was a writer and editor at New York Magazine, covering crime,

politics, the arts and New York City's urban oddities. He received an M.F.A. in Writing from Columbia

University, where he also taught in the English Department. During his undergraduate years, at Appala

chian State University, he started a rock band, which was signed to Arista Records. In 1988 he stopped

playing music to begin a writing career. As a journalist, he has appeared frequently on television and radio

news programs; in conjunction with his book, he has lectured at universities, synagogues, churches and

libraries. Raised in upstate New York, the last of eight children, he now lives in New York City with his wife,

Ellen Binder, a photographer.

Arrangements for Stephen Dubner made through the B 'nai B 'rith Lecture Bureau,

enormous problem: Salaries are extremely low in Cuba. I cannot imagine that the building fund has much in it. The size of the congregation continues to dwindle, not just because of death, but because of aliyah to Israel, which is a bittersweet event for this community.

Yet as grim as the situation seemed, the mood was far from depressed. On the previous Saturday, the congregation had celebrated the first Bar Mitzvah in a very, very long time. While there was no rabbi or teacher to train the young man, he had been instructed by a twenty-something lay man, who had enough knowledge to prepare the boy to become a Bar Mitzvah. The pride and joy in the congregation was still palpable days later. They had no kosher butcher shops, but when they wanted to celebrate a holiday meal together, a member of the congregation who is a vegetarian would slaughter the chickens, so that it would approximate proper methods. Naturally, intermarriage is a concern to this community, yet they proudly pointed out the intermarried families who are active members of the community and raising their children as Jews.

As I listened in awe to the obstacles the Jews of Santiago de Cuba faced and overcame by tenaciously sticking together, I was reminded again of the importance of community in my life. It is a force that cannot be overestimated.

Shalom, Julie Green

" . , Religious School News ~

It's Adar! Be Happy! We will soon have two wonderful ways as a community and with our families to celebrate our freedom - Purim and Passover. Now, why does Purim come one month before Passover? The rabbis suggested that by celebrating Purim with as much joy and merriment as we can muster, we will attend our Passover seders with a desire for serious Jewish learning.

So, let your soul be merry during our fun-filled reading of the megillah (the Story of Esther) on Purim (March 20th & 21 51

)

and, on the following weekend, during the Purim Carnival. Then, come to our Passover Family Workshop on Saturday morning, April 81b to learn about the wonders of the Passover Haggadah.

Gan News

" February was such an incredibly busy month for the

Gan. First we anxiously awaited the arrival of the

ground hog. As luck would have it, all the groundhogs saw their shadows so we are in for quite a bit more cold winter weather. But have no fear, our gymnastics

program is here!! And, it will run through to the end of March. The children have been having so much fun. We never know what new activities are tucked away in Ms. Desi' s special fun bag.

Our Dental program was very informative. The hygienist reinforced our knowledge with a wonderful movie and a puppet show.

March promises to be equally exciting. In addition to gymnastics, we will be having a wonderful interactive

Purim program with lots of singing and dancing. The children will dress up in costumes, shake their groggers and make as much noise as they want, especially when "Haman's" name is mentioned. We will also bake yummy and delicious hamantashen.

You can take advantage of Early Bird Specials and

Free Tuition Specials if you register your child for

Fall 2000 programs by March 31st. We are also accepting registration for Summer Camp as well. For more information regarding available space for any of

our programs or for information on our registration specials, please call 545-6555 NOW! Remember, we offer flexible hours, full time and part-time care, certified teachers, and a safe and caring environment to

foster social growth and development.

MAEIY:
