Snelten 1.0 1 1 1 0 1 1 13.50 Well, for three pitchers who had been talked about as possible near-future San Francisco Giants, it was a bad day. Let’s start with 2012 1st-round pick Chris Stratton. Stratton gave up season highs in hits and earned runs. His ERA jumped from 5.59 to 6.88 in the one game. He has also now got a .320 batting average against. He does have 28 strikeouts against 12 walks in 34 IP, but with the hits allowed, he has a 1.74 WHIP. Then there was submariner reliever Tyler Rogers, who had been putting together some excellent numbers. He was unable to finish an inning for the first time this season (he’d gone less than an inning before). He gave up two hits, three walks, and an error by Jae-Gyun Hwang at third base did not help things. He now has 11 walks in 29.2 IP, with 16 strikeouts. Finally, D.J. Snelten had an electric 15 games in Richmond, but has struggled in Sacramento. He has given up three earned runs in two games at Triple-A, and has give up six earned runs in his last three appearances (2.2 IP) For that, the offense was not enough. Kelby Tomlinson got on to led off the game, and Orlando Calixte hit his 7th home run of the season, but that was just about the only highlight for the offense. Calixte is the team leader in home runs for the River Cats (the closest behind him is Ryder Jones, at 7), but a lot of that has to do with San Francisco giving almost anyone with some power a shot with a promotion, and then cutting them. The Squirrels took the early lead, with a lot of thanks going to Hunter Cole. Cole hit a solo home run in the second inning to give Richmond the 1-0 lead. In the fourth, Miguel Gomez doubled, followed by Cole’s double to put Richmond up 2-0. It was Cole’s 13th double and 2nd home run for the year. For Gomez, it was his 11th double, raising his batting average to .331 Matt Gage didn’t leave with the lead, but he had a great start. A season-high 7 strikeouts was the highlight, even though he gave up two runs off of a home run to give up a tie. However, the bullpen let the game get out of hand, specifically Carlos Alvarado. Alvarado gave up five hits, two singles, two doubles and a home run, to allow three runs. And in this case, the home run was just the second hit he gave up, so it wasn’t a rally killer, unfortunately. One more hitter to highlight is Ali Castillo. Castillo had a 3-hit game, his first in ten games. Between the two 3-hit games, Castillo has been hitting .429. The Giants only got one extra-base hit, a double by Matt Winn. Otherwise, it was six singles that the Giants peppered the Nuts with. However, the Nuts only got one extra-base hit themselves, a triple. But they got nine singles and six walks and peppered Mark Reyes to the tune of six runs. The five earned runs weren’t quite a season-high for Reyes, but the six walks allowed were. He now has 42 walks against 25 strikeouts in 41.2 innings of work. The top hitter for San Jose was Bryan Reynolds, who has quietly been hitting again. He had his third multi-hit game out of the last five, and extended his hitting streak to six games. He also picked up a walk, his first in eight games. He has 13 walks against 37 strikeouts in 169 at-bats. Heath Quinn also extended his hitting streak to seven games with a single. The single was a two-out, two-RBI single that represented a big part of San Jose’s offense. An interesting pre-game tweet by Joe Ritzo (add a loss to the road numbers). Why do the Giants struggle at home? San Jose is one of the fairer of the parks in the offensively-oriented California League. That blown save came from Wilson Santos, who came in for the 8th inning and went the final two innings. With the GreenJackets up 3-2, Santos hit the first batter he faced, and that runner stole second. A single and a sacrifice fly later, and the game was tied. In the ninth, he struggled to two more runs, in an inning marred by two walks (one intentional), a wild pitch, a passed ball, and an error. It was the first runs Santos had given up in three appearances since arriving on May 16th That wasted an excellent start by Garrett Williams, even though it was arguably his worst of three starts this season. The two earned runs were the first he’d given up this season (he’d given up two unearned ones previously), and all his stats were his highest of the season. However, Williams has been nothing but encouraging since his debut, with 12 strikeouts and 4 walks in 13 innings. The Giants also got Greg Brody (11th round, 2014 draft) making his season debut with a scoreless inning. Brody only got into four games in 2016 (and missed all of 2015).

The offense didn’t have an overwhelming moment. Michael Bernal, getting his first start with Augusta after coming down from San Jose, hit the only extra-base hit for the team, with a double. Kelvin Beltre picked up a two-hit game, as did Jacob Heyward. Heyward is now batting .286 over his last ten games, slowly raising that batting average. Finally, Augusta’s most exciting development has been the develop of a new riverside stadium. You probably know this by now. Sacramento River Cat News River Cats can't catch Redbirds, fall 13-3 Big Memphis middle innings undo Sacramento in series finale The Sacramento River Cats (18-29) had a chance to win their third series of the year tonight against the Memphis Redbirds (30-19) but instead settled for a series split after their 13-3 loss Friday night at Raley Field. The River Cats pounced on the Redbirds early courtesy of an Orlando Calixte two-run home run in the first. The 426-foot bomb was Calixte's seventh homer of the year and just his first at Raley Field. Sacramento starter Chris Stratton was strong through the first three frames tonight, holding Memphis to one run. It all unraveled for Stratton from there, however, as the Redbirds tagged him for seven runs over the next two innings. The right-hander allowed a season-high eight runs on 10 hits over five innings. Memphis added five more over the final four frames. First baseman Ryder Jones knocked in the third and final run for the River Cats, scoring Kelby Tomlinson with a fifth-inning base hit. Sacramento will hit the road tomorrow night as they open a four-game set with the Reno Aces. Rogers: Submariner Tyler Rogers allowed four runs (two earned) and walked a season-high three batters in 0.2 innings…Rogers entered tonight's game with the fifth-lowest batting average against among PCL relievers with a .190 mark but that number climbed to .200 Friday…Rogers is second among relievers in the PCL with 21 appearances Richmond Flying Squirrels News Say It Ain't Seven; Squirrels Drop Opener In Harrisburg Gage Goes Seven In Seventh Straight Loss Harrisburg, PA - The Harrisburg Senators (21-24) scored three runs in the eighth inning to hand the Flying Squirrels (17-29)their seventh consecutive loss on Friday at FNB Field by a final of 5-2. Richmond's Matt Gage turned in a quality outing with seven solid inning of work, but received a no-decision despite allowing just a pair of runs. The series continues on Saturday night at 6:00 p.m., in Harrisburg, PA. Friday night was Matt Gage's turn to try and end the Squirrels six game skid. Gage started things off on the right foot by striking out a pair, needing just 11 pitches to retire the side in the first. Hunter Cole provided Gage some offense with the game's first run with a low-flying home run in the top of the second inning. Cole's second homer of the season skimmed over the right field fence to lend Richmond a 1-0 lead. Harrisburg's hurler John Simms recovered from the Cole homer to set the side in order in the third. Simms was then touched up for another run in the fourth on a pair of doubles from Miguel Gomez and HunterCole. Cole lashed his 13th double of the season out to deep leftcenter field, putting Richmond on top 2-0. Simms did not allow another run in his outing. Richmond was able to maintain their lead as Gage received a little help from his defense in the bottom of the third. Yadiel Hernandez reached on a base hit and attempted to score when Osvaldo Abreu doubled out to left field. Left fielder Tyler Horan raced to pick up the ball and threw it into shortstop Myles Schroder. Hernandez was signaled home to try and score and Schroder threw a bullet to the catcher Eliezer Zambrano to cut down the runner at home. Gage dodged some more difficulty after loading the bases in the fourth inning. After Neftali Soto, Drew Ward and Raudy Read reached, Gage punched out Yadiel Hernandez looking on an off speed pitch to end the threat and keep Richmond ahead 2-0.

Unfortunately for Richmond, the Squirrels wouldn't be so fortunate to escape trouble in the fifth as Harrisburg tied the game, 2-2. Osvaldo Abreu guided a single into center field and Mario Lissondrilled a two-run homer over the left center field wall to even the score. Gage carried the game tied through seven innings in a no-decision. The lefty allowed just the two runs on six hits. He struck out a season-high seven batters on 105 pitches. The Senators Simms also received a no-decision by working six innings. Simms allowed two runs on five hits. He struck out six and did not walk a batter. Harrisburg took control of the game and grabbed their first lead of the day off of reliever Carlos Alvarado in the eighth inning. Jose Marmolejos singled to begin a stretch of five consecutive hits for the Senators. Neftali Soto then drilled a two-run homer over the right center field wall and Hernandez added an RBI single to go ahead 5-2. Alvarado (0-1) tossed 0.2 innings in taking his first loss of the year. Wander Suero closed out the game to earn his eighth save of the season with a scoreless ninth. San Jose Giants News Nuts Control Giants In Series Opener, 7-3 San Jose drops opening game of home-and-home set MODESTO, CA - San Jose's bid for a third straight win fell short with a 7-3 loss to the Modesto Nuts on Friday evening at John Thurman Field. The Nuts collected 10 hits, scored in five different innings and never trailed en route to the series-opening triumph. The Giants (20-29) suffered just their second loss in six games on their current road trip. Bryan Reynolds (2-for-3) had a pair of singles while Heath Quinn (1-for-4, 2 RBI) drove home two runs to lead San Jose offensively in defeat. Modesto scored single runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings against Giants starter Mark Reyes to build a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the second, Logan Taylor walked to start the rally. Eric Filia then reached on a bunt single and when Reyes threw the ball wildly to first for an error, Taylor advanced into third. Joey Curletta followed by grounding into a double play with Taylor scoring the first run of the night. In the fourth, Chris Mariscal led off with a single before stealing second. With two down, a wild pitch moved Mariscal to third before Curletta drew a walk. Reyes then picked off Curletta at first, but during the rundown, Mariscal was able to steal home pushing the lead to 2-0. An inning later, Daniel Torres led off with a single before scoring two batters later when Braden Bishop smacked a one-out triple into the left field corner. Meanwhile, the Giants managed just three singles over the first five innings before finally breaking through in the top of the sixth. Facing reliever Steven Ridings, a one-out walk to Jalen Miller started the rally before Daniel Carbonell was hit by a pitch. Reynolds then drew a walk to load the bases. Ridings came back to retire Aramis Garcia on a pop out, but Quinn followed with a line drive single into center. The hit brought home both Miller and Carbonell to trim the Nuts lead to 3-2. tying run, also advanced to third, but was stranded there when Dillon Dobson struck out swinging to end the inning. Modesto then came right back with a three-run bottom of the sixth to take control of the game. Reyes walked Filia to begin the inning before Curletta singled. Joe DeCarlo then ripped a single down the left field line to score Filia with the first run of the frame. Torres was up next and he greeted new pitcher Yordy Cabrera with another RBI single to make it 5-2. Jordan Cowan then delivered an RBI groundout as DeCarlo scored for a 6-2 cushion. The Nuts scored their seventh and final run of the night in the bottom of the seventh as Mariscal drew a leadoff walk before back-to-back one-out singles from Filia and Curletta produced the run. In the top of the eighth, Carbonell reached safely with one out on an error before Reynolds singled. Garcia then lined a single into center to plate Carbonell bringing San Jose to within 7-3. However with the potential tying run in the on-deck circle, both Quinn and Dobson grounded out to end the inning. In the ninth, Matt Winn doubled off the left field fence with one out, but the next two Giants hitters were quickly retired to end the game. Matt Festa (2-2) earned the win out of the Modesto bullpen after tossing four scoreless innings. Festa, who entered the game to begin the top of the second, allowed just one hit and retired 11 out of the 12 batters he faced. The right-hander struck out four. Joe Pistorese made the spot-start for the Nuts and pitched just a scoreless top of the first before giving way to Festa in the second. Reyes (1-7) suffered the loss for San Jose. The left-hander was charged with six runs (five earned) in five-plus innings of work. Reyes walked a season-high six batters and struck out two. Notes * A victory on Friday would have matched San Jose's longest win streak of the season (three games, April 7-9). * The Nuts out-hit the Giants 10-7. * Modesto had the leadoff batter reach base in seven out of their eight innings. * Reynolds has 11 hits in 22 at-bats (.500 AVG) on the road trip. * Quinn and Jonah Arenado (1-for-4) each extended hitting streaks to seven games. Augusta GreenJackets News Ninth Inning Error Costs GreenJackets GreenJackets Let Another Get Away Late Augusta, GA-With the bases loaded, two outs, the bases loaded, and a tied game in the top of the ninth, Matt Gonzalez came to bat for the Rome Braves. He hit a groundball to GreenJackets shortstop Brandon Van Horn. Van Horn decided to go for the force play at third. The ball went past third allowing two runs to score giving the Braves a 5-3 lead Friday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

The GreenJackets threatened in the bottom of the inning, giving Skyler Ewing an opportunity by putting runners at the corners with two outs. Ewing lined out to center field to end the game as the GreenJackets dropped their fifth straight. The GreenJackets led 3-2 going into the eighth inning before things began to fall apart. Brett Cumberland was hit by pitch to lead off the frame. He then stole second and advanced to third on a single by Lucas Herbert. Kevin Josephina then hit a sacrifice fly to allow Cumberland to score and tie the game. The GreenJackets struck first in the first when they loaded the bases. With two out, Jacob Heyward hit a single, plating two, giving the early advantage to the GreenJackets. With the game tied at two in the bottom of the sixth, Michael Bernal hit a double to left field in his Augusta debut to score Jose Vizcaino giving the GreenJackets back the lead. The GreenJackets will be back in action Saturday night for game three of the four game series against the Braves. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05pm with the gates opening at 2:30pm. It is First Responders Night presented by Support 1. Festivities will include a Corn Hole Tournament, our Annual Guns vs. Hose Softball game, a pregame concert by Adam Harris Thompson, and an appearance by the Fur Circus. Kids 12 and under will able to run the bases after the game. Domenic Mazza (2-4, 4.95) will start on the mound for the GreenJackets against Bryse Wilson (3-1, 2.18) for the Braves. The 29th consecutive season of professional baseball in Augusta is underway.
