Aluminium – Building the Future: the motto of the European Aluminium Congress 2015 attests to the self-confi dence of a sector that is convinced of the potential of its material for the future. And very rightly so, because the aluminium industry is setting trends and actively pursuing new developments without fi rst waiting for external stimuli. This is also one of the reasons why the German aluminium industry is in such good shape in 2015. It is well positioned in a challenging global market environment.

by Sigmar Gabriel, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, for the European Aluminium Congress 2015.

Message of Greeting“

In the long term, Germany as well as Europe needs a powerful and competitive aluminium industry – along the whole value chain, from production, to processing, through to reuse. This is because the industry is important for growth, progress and employment in Germany.

Aluminium is an innovative material for which there is growing demand worldwide. Its light weight, coupled with its high strength, corrosion resistance and exceptional recyclability arejust some of the properties that account for aluminium’s multifunctional applications. It is no longer possible to imagine certain branches of industry without aluminium – from the car and aerospace industries, to the building and construction and transport sectors, through to electrical engineering. The light metal is particularly important as well, for example, when it comes to implementing technical solutions for sustainable and effi cient energy conservation.

It is therefore not without reason that the sector is looking forward to positive business development in the coming years. Politicians will create the necessary policy environment. This is the only way to master new challenges. This also includes reconciling the issues of climate change and environmental pollution with the need for industrial value creation in Germany. In implementing the move towards utilising alternative energy sources and achieving climate goals, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy will ensure that the energy-intensive production and processing of aluminium in Germany is safeguarded in the long term.

The European Aluminium Congress 2015 will cover trend-setting topics and will demonstrate that the representatives of the aluminium industry are working with foresight on the future image of the sector.

On this note, I wish you every success with your congress this year!

Sincerely yours,

Sigmar Gabriel

A positive future requires fresh thinking. The decision makers of today, tomorrow and what follows should be aware of the mega-trends of the future, and which opportunities and risks are involved in these trends.

The mega-trends that are driving the emerging markets are mobility, care of resources and recycling and Industry 4.0 or new materials. These trends will also have a decisive infl uence on the future of the “magic metal” aluminium. Thanks to its material properties, the wide range of processing possibilities, as well as its excellent re-usability, aluminium is the material of the future.

The continued dynamic development of the branch is closely tied to the innovative strength of the compa-nies, as well as the benefi cial properties of the material.

The EAC – European Aluminium Congress 2015 is aimed at representatives from aluminium industry, customer industry and research facilities.
