Number 24/14 Wednesday August 13 2014 From Sue Organisation for 2015 Detailed organisation for 2015 has now commenced. We currently have in excess of 100 preps enrolled and anticipate that the number may increase slightly as the year progresses. We have scheduled school tours every fortnight on Tuesdays at 9.30am and frequently have requests to conduct tours on other days and times. Whilst there is a strong demand for enrolments in the school, we are keen to maintain our current school population and do not wish to encroach on existing play space with additional classrooms, therefore I am attempting to balance the number of children exiting the school with a similar number of new enrolments. We recently changed the timing for the distribution of information on fees for the subsequent year; this was done in Term 4 of 2013 for the 2014 school year. All the neighbouring schools have a similar time frame and we have found that the timing streamlined our processes and proved to be more efficient and effective on all levels. Therefore our School Council has determined that we will be distributing information regarding fees for the 2015 school year in the second week of Term 4 which will be the week beginning Monday 13 October. The intention is to invite parents to make the relevant payments during Term 4 which means that our school year can commence very calmly and orderly. Many grade levels have activities and special events quite early on in the year, so if payments have been made and relevant forms signed accordingly it will help avoid headaches and streamline procedures noticeably. One new component to the fees will be a levy for ICT. All schools are finding that it is essential to employ a local technician to support the hardware, software, maintenance and connectivity issues. Hampton employs two local technicians who work a total of 3.5 days which supplements the departmental technician’s hours of 12.3 hours. The challenge in managing ICT is the speed with which hardware becomes obsolete, software becomes outdated, older buildings with solid brick walls that are not designed for modern technologies and easy connectivity and quite simply the cost of maintenance and staying abreast of the change. Unfortunately the allocation provided by the department is inadequate. Our preliminary budget for 2015 indicates that the levy will cover less than half the costs associated with ICT for our school with 650 students. Buildings and Grounds Update This week we hope to receive the detailed drawings for the new basketball court area. The Buildings and Grounds Committee and School Council will carefully review and potentially fine tune the drawings and then we will be in a position to call for selective tenderers for the work. We are still optimistic that this work can be completed in the latter part of the year. Of course this area will add significantly and enhance the play space at our school.

Organisation for 2015

Detailed organisation for 2015 has now commenced. We currently have in excess of 100 preps enrolled and

anticipate that the number may increase slightly as the year progresses. We have scheduled school tours every

fortnight on Tuesdays at 9.30am and frequently have requests to conduct tours on other days and times. Whilst

there is a strong demand for enrolments in the school, we are keen to maintain our current school population

and do not wish to encroach on existing play space with additional classrooms, therefore I am attempting to

balance the number of children exiting the school with a similar number of new enrolments.

We recently changed the timing for the distribution of information on fees for the subsequent year; this was

done in Term 4 of 2013 for the 2014 school year. All the neighbouring schools have a similar time frame and

we have found that the timing streamlined our processes and proved to be more efficient and effective on all

levels.

Therefore our School Council has determined that we will be distributing information regarding fees for the

2015 school year in the second week of Term 4 which will be the week beginning Monday 13 October. The

intention is to invite parents to make the relevant payments during Term 4 which means that our school year

can commence very calmly and orderly. Many grade levels have activities and special events quite early on in

the year, so if payments have been made and relevant forms signed accordingly it will help avoid headaches

and streamline procedures noticeably.

One new component to the fees will be a levy for ICT. All schools are finding that it is essential to employ a

local technician to support the hardware, software, maintenance and connectivity issues. Hampton employs

two local technicians who work a total of 3.5 days which supplements the departmental technician’s hours of

12.3 hours. The challenge in managing ICT is the speed with which hardware becomes obsolete, software

becomes outdated, older buildings with solid brick walls that are not designed for modern technologies and

easy connectivity and quite simply the cost of maintenance and staying abreast of the change. Unfortunately

the allocation provided by the department is inadequate. Our preliminary budget for 2015 indicates that the

levy will cover less than half the costs associated with ICT for our school with 650 students.

Buildings and Grounds Update

This week we hope to receive the detailed drawings for the new basketball court area. The Buildings and

Grounds Committee and School Council will carefully review and potentially fine tune the drawings and then

we will be in a position to call for selective tenderers for the work. We are still optimistic that this work can be

completed in the latter part of the year. Of course this area will add significantly and enhance the play space at

our school.

Sporting Excellence

Last weekend we had three very enthusiastic teams competing in the National Championships in Aerobics

and Dance at the Gold Coast in Queensland over a three day period. We had a large entourage of supporters

including parents, grandparents, aunts, siblings and friends and their support and presence was felt at the

venues. The two aerobics teams were ably coached by Tracey Vaughan who devoted much time to

preparation and training. We were very fortunate to have the dance team coached by Sim Paul one of the

teaching staff at Hampton who has extensive knowledge and skill in Bollywood dancing. Our three teams all

performed to the best of their ability on the day. How lovely is it to be able to note this! Whilst the children

were understandably quite nervous and perhaps a little apprehensive prior to the performance time, they all

rose to the challenge once they hit the stage area in the cavernous Gold Coast Convention Centre; from the

audience perspective we could see the adrenalin rising as they commenced performing.

The opportunity to perform with thousands of other primary and secondary students from all over the country

was a special and memorable one for our children and those watching! I was the very proud principal

watching all of children intensely focus, contain their nerves, concentrate on the music and ensure they were

in synchrony throughout their performance. There were some challenges: Sarah Thompson started the

competition with an injured and very sore knee – there were frozen peas applied before and after her

performances, Alyssa Karamitos was inadvertently flicked in the eye during her performance but managed to

maintain her focus, smile and stay in formation – not missing a trick!

I extend my sincere congratulations to all of our competitors who represented Hampton with distinction.

The Rockettes including: Olivia Aikins in 5/6F Red Tingle, Sarah Thompson in 5/6E Wollemi, Sara

Schmid in 5/6A, Wattles, Kathleen Whipp in 5/6A, Wattles, Lauren Wilson in 5/6, Wollemi, Evie Weber

Wilson in 4D, Melaeucas and Florine Meijer in 5/6A, Wattles finished in 3rd place earning a bronze

medal in the Primary Stage 1 – Open category.

The Bollylicious dancers including: Dominique Doig in 4A – Tea Trees, Tayla Jones in 4A – Tea Trees,

Olivia Muller in 4A – Tea Trees, Rosie Jackson in 4D - Melaleucas, Amelia Pritchard in 4D – Melaleucas,

Sarah Thompson in 5/6E - Wollemi, Elissa Branson in 5/6E - Wollemi, Sophie Taylor in 5/6D –

Sassafras, Emily Cope in 5/6F – Red Tingle, Hannah Schwarz in 5/6C - Eucalypts, Olivia Aikins in 5/6F –

Red Tingle, Sara Schmid in 5/6A – Wattles, Lucia Buckley in 5/6D – Sassafras, Reese Mautone in 5/6E -

Wollemi, Holly McGowan in 5/6C - Eucalypts, Alyssa Karamitos in 5/6E – Wollemi and Gemma

Berlowitz in 5/6D – Sassafras finished in first place and are the Australian champions in the International

Dance category. The coach - Sim Paul brought meticulous attention to detail with costumes, makeup, hair,

and authentic and culturally respectful choreography which paid dividends! Sim was also very encouraging

and generous with her time in supporting and coaching the girls. Thank you Sim!

I hope the girls and families involved found the competition rewarding and enjoyable. I was delighted to be

part of this very special experience.

School Review

During the last few weeks, committees, School Council, staff and small discussion groups have reviewed

expenditure on school priorities over the last 4 years. Our school priorities for the current Strategic Plan

include Mathematics, Literacy and Student Wellbeing. I have included a summation of expenditure below. I

am happy to discuss the expenditure allocated to priorities with any interested community members.

Resilience

Some children are naturally more resilient than others. Their temperament helps them to be

mentally and psychologically tough and they are able to bounce back after a setback or

disappointment. Unfortunately, not every child has such natural resilience. Children need to

develop resilience skills and strategies early in their life as these skills are important when

dealing with things that life can throw your way. They need to be able to bounce back from

life’s bigger and smaller setbacks. Research shows that resilience can be nurtured and

developed, particularly when parents themselves show resilience and model a variety of

skills and strategies to use when dealing with issues or disappointment.

Parents need to avoid solving their children’s problems for them. Parents need to coach their

children through some of the more challenging moments in life and discuss and review what

they have learnt to reinforce the learning for further application in other situations.

You can promote resilience in your children by:

Having a positive attitude yourself, as a parent your attitude and ability to bounce back

from difficulties shows your child skills on how to cope themselves.

Build kids’ coping skills, teach your children strategies when things don’t go their way

as this happens throughout life. Let them know you have faith in their ability to cope.

Take opportunities to teach them to grow and learn, let them know not everything is a

problem just because things don’t go their way.

Allowing them be active participants within the family to help solve problems and

reinforce the learning.

Promoting resilience is very important. It allows children to develop the 4 basic skill sets:

problem solving,

independence,

optimism and

social connection.

If you have resilience or other social and emotional concerns about your child there are some

really great websites and books available to assist you in this area. There are also a lot of

seminars available for parents to attend. Robyn Farnell is the school’s wellbeing leader so if

you do have concerns about your child she can point you in the right direction for help and

advice.

In sick bay we are trying to encourage children to be more resilient and to not attend for

every little scratch and/or bump as this is often part of normal play. They need to seek advice

from the yard duty teacher who will then refer them on if they have a more significant injury

or concern.
