REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION: Students with disabilities who require

accommodations (academic adjustments and/or auxiliary aids or services) for this course

MUST provide documentation of accommodations from the RVCC office of Disability

Services, C143. No accommodations will be made without this documentation.

COMMUNICATION: Check your RVCC e-mail and Lions Den Announcements

regularly. You are responsible for any information sent to your RVCC account.

CLASS ATTENDANCE: Attendance at all class sessions is mandatory. Students are

expected to attend all classes for every course in which they are enrolled. A record of

attendance will be kept. To accommodate students’ reasonable, personal situations that

might prevent them from attending classes, each student is entitled to excused absences

of this standard are handled individually by each faculty member. A student with

absences amounting to one-fifth or more of the term’s classes may be recommended to

withdraw from the course.

WITHDRAWAL FROM COURSES: Students may withdraw from courses following

procedures specified by the Office of Enrollment Services and in compliance with

published deadlines. Students who cease attending classes and do not request an official

withdrawal will receive a failing grade (F) for the course.

CLASS ETIQUETTE:

Cell Phones: The use of cell phones during class is not permitted. Please turn

cell phones off and put them away before coming to class. If you think you might

need your phone for an emergency, please let me know before class starts.

Coming Late/Leaving Early: Students are expected to be in class for the entire

period. If you need to leave class for any reason, please let me know. Students

arriving late to class will be marked absent. Students arriving late to class will not

be given extra time to take the quiz/exam.

EVALUATION: Three Unit Exams 360 points

Final Exam (cumulative) 240 points

Quizzes 100 points

GRADING SCALE: A 90–100% of total semester points

B+ 87–89%

B 80–86%

C+ 77–79%

C 70–76%

D 60–69%

F Below 60%

This is an approximate grading scale. Borderline grades will be assigned at the

instructor’s discretion. Attendance, class participation and improvement will be

taken into consideration when making these decisions. There are no extra

credit assignment opportunities. – NO EXCEPTIONS.

All concerns regarding how the scores for graded assignments were determined

need to be brought to my attention during the class that the graded assignment

is returned. A credit adjustment request is not valid if you wait until another

course meeting. The question will be addressed during a break or at the end of

the class. I will not interrupt instruction time for this purpose.

MAKE-UP POLICY: If you know you will be missing class for any reason, it is your

responsibility to notify me at least one week in advance to discuss the possibility of

making alternative arrangements for you to complete any coursework that you will miss.

QUIZZES: There are no make-ups for missed quizzes. Your two lowest quiz

grades (15 point quizzes, not the 10 point quiz) will be dropped.

EXAMS: If you know in advance that you will miss an exam, see me to discuss

alternate arrangements. In the case of an unexpected absence, one exam per

semester may be taken as a make-up, but only under the following conditions:

1. You must contact me prior to the class in which the exam is scheduled.

2. You must have a legitimate reason for missing the exam (illness, family

emergency, business travel, etc.). Appropriate documentation will be required.

3. The make-up exam must be taken before the graded exams are passed back

to the class, except in cases of an extended absence with cause.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES: Students will be able to

1. Employ the IUPAC nomenclature system to name organic compounds.

2. Draw structures from systematic names.

3. Determine the geometric structure of organic compounds using knowledge of

atomic structure, hybridization, and covalent bonding.

4. Predict the products of reactions of compounds containing functional

groups discussed in the textbook and the class.

5. Write detailed mechanisms of selected reactions.

6. Interpret infrared, mass, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectra in order

to solve structure determination problems.

7. Employ appropriate and safe laboratory techniques to perform

experiments, collaborating with partners.

8. Interpret the results of spectroscopic and chromatographic instruments to

analyze reactions and products.

9. Report the results of the laboratory experiments in a laboratory notebook,

performing quantitative calculations, and interpreting the results.

STATEMENT & POLICY ON CHEATING, PLAGIARISM

& ACADEMIC DISHONESTY

Students are required to perform all of the work specified by the faculty, and they are

responsible for the content and integrity of all academic work submitted. Cases of

academic dishonesty will be reported to the Dean of Academic and Student Services, and

at minimum will result in failure of the assignment. Examples of academic dishonesty

include, but are not limited to:

• copying a graded homework assignment from another student,

• using unauthorized assistance in any academic work,

• looking at another student’s paper during an exam or quiz

Please read the section on Academic Dishonesty, Cheating & Plagiarism in the RVCC

Student Handbook.

CODE OF STUDENT CONDUCT: Faculty members have the authority to take actions

which may be necessary to maintain order and proper conduct in the classroom. Students

whose behavior disrupts the class will be subject to removal and may be charged with a

violation of the Code of Student Conduct. Code of Conduct charges will be investigated

by the Dean of Student Services. If the student behavior presents a concern for immediate

safety of the student or members of the community, the student may be suspended until a

hearing is held. Any student who is removed from a class against his/her will is entitled

to a hearing.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS:

1. Study on a weekly basis. Avoid cramming!

2. Read relevant chapter sections before coming to class.

3. Review the suggested end-of-chapter problems.

4. Ask questions immediately.
