ORGAN TRANSCRIPTIONS-ARRANGERS

In the nineteenth century churches served as concert halls. Recital programs oftenincluded a large percentage of transcriptions and music for organ vocal [or instrumental]soloists that complemented the "purely' organ pieces. For theater organs, an ocean ofarrangements consisting of popular tunes and patriotic songs was created.[The below listed transcriptions, generally represent a selected list, and not the completeoeuvre of the transcriber/performer.]

WILLIAM T. BEST (1826-1897)[more than 5000 pieces in his repertoire ]-Organist, St. Georges Hall, Liverpool wherehe made the organ function as a substitute orchestra; hence the numerous orchestraltranscriptions. Best also issued editions of Bach, Handel and Mendelssohn, as well as 1.C. H. Rinck's Practical Organ School.
