KUALA LUMPUR: Thank you for opening up a channel to us that we can continue our sons good deed.

It is good that we get to continue with the love for the country and society, said Syed Saripuzen from Terengganu.

Syed, who lost his son in an accident and subsequently donated his sons organs, see the move as an act extending love towards society despite losing his son.

Abdul Aziz Paon, a kereta jenazah driver from Batu Pahat, who used to handle dead bodies from all levels of society where he described the job as returning to thepoint of origin where one comes from, says organ donation is an act of giving without asking in return which he would do so if given a chance, after his son becamean organ donor.

It is rare for one to be an organ donor but for Ruslan Awang from Maran, Pahang, he lost two sons in two separate car accidents years apart. Both of them were organdonors.

We are all brothers and sisters regardless of race and colour, to help each other on humanitarian ground, he said.

Indian couple R Arkumar and A Susila from Penang have tattooed the phrase organ donor on their hands, after their only daughter became an organ donor.

They shared their feelings and views at a ceremony to pay tribute and honour organ donor families, held by the National Transplant Resources Centre recently.

While accident victims who have been conrmed brain dead by doctors have the option to donate their organs, Gan Siew Poh, who is not an accident victim, donatedher corneas at the age of 81, making her likely one of the oldest tissue donors in the country.

Family members of organs and tissue donors gathered in an event called Bicara Hati on Oct 10 in Kuala Lumpur where they also heard from organ recipients.

Siti Raudhah, who underwent heart transplant at the age of 15 in 1999, is leading a healthy and normal life.

Fatin Adibah Mohari, 26, underwent kidney transplant last year after 14 years of waiting, is grateful to have a new lease of life.

Lee Chen Hoe, a kidney recipient from an American donor almost 20 years ago, was also present.

  • Lee Chen Hoe, a kidney recipient from an American donor almost 20 years ago, was also present.

National Transplant Resource Centre (NTRC) head Datin Dr Lela Yasmin Mansor sayid she always feels honoured to connect with family members, who at the time oflosing their loved ones, think of others by giving consent to donate of their loved ones organs.

Many of my sta who are assigned to the job end up developing passion and commitment because of donors.

I am ever grateful to the donors families, she said, describing the donors as heroes of society.

Jeanne, who made a decision to donate her late husband Yeoh Mun Pins organs after he was conrmed to be brain dead in Kuantan on Feb 5 this year, was stunnedwhen doctors and nurses came up to thank her for the noble deed.

There are a total of 57 donors up to September this year, and 56 donors in 2014.

There were 29 Chinese donors, 17 Indian donors, 9 Malays and 2 are others this year.

Last year, the 56 donors were made up of 30 Chinese, 19 Indians, 5 Malays and 2 others.

Dr Lela was moved by the increasing number of Malay donors, from 5 last year to 9 this year.

The number of Malay pledgers is also increasing recently, she said.

Of the 310,391 organ pledgers as of September, the Chinese made up 45.75%, Malays 25.95%, Indians 23.95% and unknown 0.02%.
